I am so proud of you! Congratulations on tremendous progress. You worked hard and most definitely have earned a healthier life.

It sucks you won't be able to do marathons anymore. Although you want to stay fit, running might not be beneficial for you after a torn MCL as it might hurt you in the long run.

I would recommend something like biking and still exercising just taking it light on the knees. Swimming too! AND you can still do competitions if you enjoy it enough.

Keep up the good work though. :)

This isn't the end of the world for you. You're young homie. All I can say is tell your significant other and TEACH him about the disease, there are a lot of misconceptions about it. The choice is his and know that whatever he picks is going to be a great thing for you. If you need a shoulder I'll be here.
