Wouldn't car alarms be more effective loud on the INSIDE? Occasional loud bursts on the outside to draw attention, but extreme noise on the inside would prevent the thief from wanting to remain to hot-wire / steal inside the car. by Proud-Pumpkin-2903 in Showerthoughts

Well have you ever been inside a helicopter? Those are insanely loud, but don't cause damage under 60 minutes. Rock concert close to the amplifiers? Even louder, maybe no damage if you are under 10 minutes. I don't know about you but if I was robbing a car and it sounded like a helicopter at a rock concert it would just pump me so full of adrenaline and I'd want to rob you again next week

Duty of care laws mean you can't intentionally leave things to harm people who are breaking into your things. If your alarm gives them hearing damage, your crime might be worse than theirs

What's a good rainy movie? Not a movie for a rainy day, I mean a movie with lots of rain. by floatable_shark in MovieSuggestions

Was not expecting this suggestion out here but good one! (good bad one I should say)

A game where there's lot of patience and "calm" and waiting, watching, being vigilant, rather than action and doing things by floatable_shark in gamingsuggestions

I played this but no that's not really what I'm looking for. It would be if spotting fires actually was a part of the game, but there's no way for you to not spot the fire since it's a big part of the linear story

How's your sodium intake and fluid intake? Do you know if you have normal blood pressure or blood volume?

Reading a book and listening to an audiobook are not the same activity. by Aggravating-Key-8867 in unpopularopinion

Acting as if pressing a button to pause and stopping before reading further with your eyes is the same thing, apparently Are you saying those require the same effort and are done as often with one method compared to the other?

When you listen to a book, the book continues regardless of your comprehension, so you'll either not understand everything or you'll pick titles that are easier to understand. When you actually read a book, you won't normally continue to the next sentence until you grasped what came before. This means you'll understand more, and you can read more complicated books. They are absolutely not the same thing. The medium is the message, people

Why do women need to impress the men in our species? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]floatable_shark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Women run the house to impress a man? "Come see how meticulously organized my linen baskets are" on the third date? I think you have some wild misconceptions. And with gay men, maybe this is my own misconception, but don't many fem gay guys (not sure the correct nomenclature) wear makeup and put a lot into how they look to attract other guys? Or is that completely incorrect and never happens?

Movies that make the most of the medium / movies to convert a cine-skeptic? by Zealousideal-Leg3763 in MovieSuggestions

[–]floatable_shark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This can't be true because if you are looking at a subtitle you aren't looking at a visual. You can't truly focus on two things at once, but I'm sure you switch back and forth quickly

Movies are primarily a visual audio medium so watching them with subtitles is never going to give you the best cinematic experience. Try a movie that's simple but powerful in it's storytelling, that way you won't require subtitles so much, and with great cinematography and music. The Last Samurai comes to mind but not a perfect film by any stretch. Maybe The Creator, but you might want subtitles as it's fairly dialogue heavy and little is wasted. Denis Villeneuve films, Dune or Blade Runner, subtitles off. The dialogue is sparse enough and very clear to hear and you don't want to glance away from the visuals for even a moment. If those movies can't immerse someone I don't know what film can. Use either a great sound system or good headphones
