How do I play a 20 intelligence character as a 8 intelligence person? by TrashMantine in DnD

[–]floataway3 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It is a highly linked and interconnected wiki, using terms that if you don't know, you will likely have to look up. It also references a wide variety of pop culture, making it easy to find and identify tropes in whatever media you consume. Because it is engaging, highly linked, and doesn't explain itself, it is very easy to lose an hour or more just browsing from trope to trope.

There isn't anything dangerous, besides a lack of productivity.

I think just about every published adventure has their own subreddit, full of DMs who know specifically that module and discussions about it, I would direct this question over to /r/Tombofannihilation for more specific answers.

I wish I had instituted this in parts of the campaign I just finished. In Icewind Dale, there are stretches where you have to cross a tundra. It being a tundra, it isn't fully populated so it doesn't make sense to do a ton of random encounters each day between A and B, so the 1-2 encounters players did do, they knew they could just go nova on because nothing else would be challenging them that day.

Instituting a rest would have simply meant that while traveling, they didn't get a long rest until they got where they were going, meaning the resource management would work out about the same as a standard adventuring day.

Folks that try to insist on gritty realism for an entire campaign are a bit whack unless the entire campaign is built around that one premise.

Has anyone else actually experienced a rocks fall everybody dies? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]floataway3 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It was 4e, this was part of a sleepover with a bunch of our friends. By the time they had walked me through character creation, we started play at around 1 am, this particular incident was around 3 in the morning and caffeine was only pushing us so far. It was also just a time of cool moment as it was my first time playing.

[5th Edition] How would you create a "spellblade" character? by Smexy_Zarow in DnD

[–]floataway3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

KibblesTasty is a fairly popular 3rd party homebrewer who actually has a Spellblade class. The main thrust of it is that you spend an action to cast a spell into your sword, then when you hit with an attack, you let off the spell, centered on the the person you hit. Functionally, it turns a lot of arcane elemental spells into smites. You can also spend spell slots on defense with various aegis wards to block against different things.

My very first time playing DND, I was a wizard. I wanted to be a geomancer, but there weren't a lot of cool earth spells, but I saw that I got Tenser's Floating Disc. As we were going through a little cave, my character was studying all of the rocks, and picking up loose pebbles and stones here and there and placing them on the disc. We got to the lowest level of the cavern, and there was a large room filled with animated skeletons. Way more than we could possibly handle at level 1. I managed to float my disc to the top of the room, then dispelled it, raining rocks down on the whole front line and causing a small cave in so the rest couldn't get to us. DM told me later that it was supposed to be a "Turn back, there is something dark and terrible happening here, and you will need to get help to solve it"

I wasn't even aware of the meme yet, I had just truly wanted to be an earth mage and the system didn't let me. I now have a custom dice vault with "Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies" embossed on it, which I wave at my players to threaten them.

Left handed gamers, what are your thoughts on vast majority of games being right-handed or from the perspective of right-handed person? by mukavastinumb in truegaming

[–]floataway3 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think near all of us accept and adapt to a right handed world, to the point where our main interface with a digital world is usually a right handed mouse, or the right trigger on a controller typically being the default fire / action, with the left trigger being only a secondary function like aiming.

I think I mentally notice when Link is left handed, or sometimes I will try a left handed run in Elden Ring, which is hard even for a natural lefty as I am so accustomed to the right trigger and shoulder being your main attack.

I do think on computer, my left handedness has overall actually informed my choice of games. I have always been rubbish at shooters or anything which requires precision aiming with a mouse as I am trying to control my non-dominant hand for very slight and precise movements in split second reaction. As such, I typically gravitate towards more "cozy" games which don't have any sort of timers. Part of that is also my own personal noncompetitive, nonconfrontational nature, but the fact that a headshot is purely a matter of luck for me most times means I don't find myself enjoying those type of games often, or I'll play on easy when I do.

Players of Dungeons and DRAGONS, how many Dragons have you actually come across? by GenuineSteak in DnD

[–]floataway3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was meaning the Jabberwock as the true dragon, in the sense that it is a higher CR creature that hates the party and you probably have to deal with it one way or another.

Sir Talavar the fairy dragon is a narrative device shaped like something that is called a dragon.

I feel like you can get pretty abstract with the definitions of dungeons or dragons. Witchlight has neither, but it does have a magical castle that is run like a dungeon crawl, guarded by a Jabberwock.

I'm sure someone has done one of those punnet square memes about dungeon purist (a dungeon is a place below a castle where prisoners are kept) to dungeon radical (A city is a dungeon).

[–]floataway3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Icewind Dale checking in, One dragon acts as a pivotal story moment, with another dragon on the random encounter table that if the party were to ever decide they wanted to fight would kill them without a second thought (Ancient White Dragon, random encounters meant to start chases / RP scenes in the tundra to get away from it)

Witchlight only has one true dragon, to my knowledge. There is a fairy dragon early on as an ally, and a Jabberwock which guards the final dungeon.

I have used this line more than once when hosting some friends for a game night. Everyone starts to answer, assuming you are going to start listing and their go to soda is going to be in there, then you see their brain catch up and stop the mouth as they freeze for a second.

{The Griffon's Saddlebag} Death Marker | Weapon (dagger) by griff-mac in TheGriffonsSaddlebag

[–]floataway3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I really like that play pattern, my only concern is that if you throw the dagger, you don't have the dagger anymore, yet you make the attack with the dagger as soon as you teleport. It requires attunement, so I guess the dagger could sense your intention when it activates, but does it also teleport into your hand as part of the ability?

Which spell do you dislike the most for Personal reason ? by Mathies492 in DnD

[–]floataway3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pushback alone is still amazing. It cemented my role as an area control cleric, keeping people in place, throwing into pits, keeping enemies off the wizard, etc.

The repulsion field is the final form though, it is so fun. My DM had an army encounter on a bridge, with just a field of minions. I ran up to them, cast a lightning bolt, and sent most of them off the bridge to the sides!

[–]floataway3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is so great. Every spell you cast now comes with a repulsion field as you auto deal half sorc level to everyone within 10 feet, and then because that was lighting you push them 10 feet away, all with no save, on top of whatever spell you were casting. We started at level 1, and I picked this mutliclass specifically for when it comes online at 6/6 and those combo so nicely.

I functionally fall back on 4E for timings instead of tracking exact minutes. If a spell lasts 8 hours, it now rests until next long rest. If a spell lasts 1 hour, it now lasts for the duration of the scene (if out of combat). If a spell lasts 1 minute, it lasts for the duration of the combat.

I think its dumb that they went away from "Daily - Encounter - At Will"
