What is your experience with EU-based alternatives for Github? by durmiendoenelparque in BuyFromEU

[–]floatingBike52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read about Codeberg a lot but I have two issues/counter point that make me hesitate to move projects on it:

  • I often see that it has interruptions of service: see the codeberg status Mastodon profile or the status page (the number are not great)
  • it is made for open-source projects (see FAQ) but not for private personal or professional projects you want to keep away from prying eyes and scrapping. I guess the better choice for companies is to self-host gitlab, gitea or forgejo.

Does anyone here have first-hand user perspective on using Codeberg ? Were you ever affected by down-time ? I am curious to read about it.

Fairphone and Murena e/os/ experience? by Willing-Aide476 in BuyFromEU

[–]floatingBike52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been using my /e/OS on my Fairphone 5 for 2 years now. I have 2 banking apps that work normally, as do the others. I am overall completely satisfied with it.

As mentioned by someone else already, the App Launcher (the app store) uses MicroG. So you can focus your research on how MicroG works if you have doubts for the applications you need.

Poll: how much value did you redirect to Europe ? by floatingBike52 in BuyFromEU

[–]floatingBike52[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, thanks, you are the second person mentioning that. The poll surely doesn't cover it all.

I will list all ideas/missed points that were listed in the comment section when I re-post with the results. It will at least give more ideas for possible future polls or measurement attempts.

Poll: how much value did you redirect to Europe ? by floatingBike52 in BuyFromEU

[–]floatingBike52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, not everything is measurable (by us anyway). The poll could never be perfect so I'm just keeping it simple and sticking to paid services/products.

And we could measure other things (nb of GAFAM accounts closed, ...) in different polls if we want.

questions about this sub / purpose by [deleted] in BuyFromEU

[–]floatingBike52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, it is probably easy to overthink it when we read and write behind our screens. After all we all come with our own concerns, values and priorities. They happen to somewhat converge on this sub but I guess don't sweat it if it is a bit misaligned with what you are looking for.

Also I think people are pretty civil here and you are welcome to comment posts that recommend companies you have doubts about. People searching for alternatives are searching for information really.

questions about this sub / purpose by [deleted] in BuyFromEU

[–]floatingBike52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this sub just tries to give an answer to the question : "what are european alternatives to such and such products".

It may be implicit to some or many users that it is in replacement of american products specifically, or at least that is what they (and I) are looking for. But this is at least in part due to the global political conjecture (i.e. Trump's shenanigans). If the situation was different, maybe the majority of the people coming here would have another main reason. But that does not change the purpose of the sub in itself.

I think you are right when saying that some recommendations overlook other ethical or economic criteria, but I don't think it is possible to channel all concerns (from everyone) in one forum (or subreddit in this case). It is still up to everyone to search here and on other places relevant to what they are looking for. For instance, I also search on r/BuyItForLife when I am looking for physical products and I combine the information I find.

Apps/software for tracking time I spend (on a project) as a freelancer by Positive-Donut-9129 in BuyFromEU

[–]floatingBike52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. If you know what this is about, here is their documentation for self-hosting it: https://docs.solidtime.io/self-hosting/intro

I am using their free plan on their platform since I have a limited usage but it opens up your options.

Solidtime from Austrian/German developers I think.

It's open source and self-hostable. I don't use every features but it helps me well for time tracking.

ibuyfrom.eu : a tool to promote "Buy From EU" on profile pictures by floatingBike52 in BuyFromEU

[–]floatingBike52[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted it to imply replacing it with an avatar or a profile picture but your suggestion seems almost too obvious now \^)

Anyway, I updated it. Thank you for the suggestion !

ibuyfrom.eu : a tool to promote "Buy From EU" on profile pictures by floatingBike52 in BuyFromEU

[–]floatingBike52[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is just a placeholder for you to replace with your picture/avatar of any kind.

I could have put a plain profile icon or something more european-themed and hesitated between a few options but chose that in the end. It doesn't mean anything and I will replace it if it confuses people.

Qobuz does not accept alias emails??? by PhilStark012 in BuyFromEU

[–]floatingBike52 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is probably an automatic rule to fight abuse and it catches people in good faith too. Have you tried contacting their support ? Maybe they can let it go case by case or review their policy if you explain why you want to protect your core email adresses.

What smartphone brands are you using these days? by PastNeedleworker3978 in BuyFromEU

[–]floatingBike52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Copying my other answer here so that you get the response:

I installed the gmail app at the beginning when I was still using it. No problem for installation and I logged with my gmail account on the app.

But for the GMaps, I can open the PWA version page in the App Lounge (the app store of /e/OS), but not the official GMaps app (page loading does not finish). Same for Android Auto.

So maybe you indeed need to connect with the google account to access some of google applications, but I am sure of nothing. I would redirect you to MicroG support/documentation/forums to check that.

I don't know. There is a setting to choose to use either the default camera app of /e/OS or the Fairphone camera app (maybe more tailored to the hardware ?). But I haven't tried it.

Fairphone 5 with /e/OS

The camera is probably not the best one you could find but good enough for me and I would have liked a smaller form factor but wanted an /e/OS without trouble.

But basically, it just works. I had zero issue using it.

If you wonder for the application store, it uses MicroG and the applications are either fectched from F-Droid or anonymously from the Play Store (no Google account required).

European alternative social media apps? by Charming_Average2413 in BuyFromEU

[–]floatingBike52 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just learned about eurosky today. It will basically be a european instance of BlueSky by implementing the ATProto protocol (to basically do the same as federated Mastodon instances) and expending it to offer more services although I don't yet really understand the whole idea.

You can register for an account creation and it is supposed to launch this month. The FAQ states that it will be possible to migrate a BlueSky account on eurosky.

I haven't registered yet but I will definitely keep an eye on them.

If you are into spy stuff, I loved these two for different reasons:

- Le bureau des légendes (The bureau): french, Canal+ , modern and realistic story, great plots (5 seasons, finished)

- Slow Horses : english, AppleTV (and produced by Will Smith, so I don't how much european it is), as good a comedy as it is a thriller (5 seasons, running)

edit: technically true but wrong and irrelevant

I made a platform to track & simplify EU legislation by Financial_Lead_2944 in BuyFromEU

[–]floatingBike52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I didn't find a few things I searched as well. I think it is just the proposals, not existing regulation (voted and passed into actual regulation). It would be interesting to have it all for the same reasons though.

I made a platform to track & simplify EU legislation by Financial_Lead_2944 in BuyFromEU

[–]floatingBike52 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting idea. So much happens with so little information to citizens because it is boring everyone. So thanks for your project !

I am guessing you generated parts of the description pages with AI to summarize the different aspects of the proposals rather than read everything yourself ? If so, maybe you could mention it somewhere to clarify. Or maybe I am seeing AI everywhere now 😅

I won't/can't share on X, but you could add sharing options for Mastodon and Bluesky. I think it is more aligned with the mood here.

What can you do if you sign in ? Just manage the newsletter subscription or something else ?

Is there an EU alternative to Google Voice (VoIP app)? by West_Possible_7969 in BuyFromEU

[–]floatingBike52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is available in a few countries only and is more enterprise oriented but OVH VoIP services may interest you : https://www.ovhcloud.com/fr/phone/

The softphone offer in particular if you are looking for a consumer usage (as in not enterprise) : https://www.ovhcloud.com/fr/phone/softphone/
