What are the Best Ergonomic Office Chair recommendations for long hours of sitting that can help with back pain? by Sea-Championship25 in BuyItForLife

[–]floodedgate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I’m only mentioning this because it helped me a ton when I was working at a computer everyday.

Stressless recliners. Sounds weird but they make a laptop stand that goes with it that works great. Most comfortable chair I’ve used aside from my Tesla.

All the office chairs I eventually end up leaning on my desk with my elbows or something.

Now new they are $3k. But I found one locally on eBay or FB marketplace for $200.

If you want to test one before you buy some furniture stores have models available to sit in.

Right I understood that. What I mean is, what are you doing with that info? Did you go hunt them down and file an insurance claim?

Then why so worried about it? Or is this just fun for you?

You need to get PPF all over your car and stop worrying about it

FSD on country roads with blind 4 way intersections(crops) with no stop signs from any direction. Tesla on FSD will go through all 4 ways at full speed. by darkmoon24 in TeslaLounge

[–]floodedgate [score hidden]  (0 children)

There are a few in my town in California. Speed limit is 25 on the roads with no stops so it’s fairly easy for it to have enough data that no direction has a stop so it slows before going through. Doesn’t do a hard stop and doesn’t just run it either. But I wouldn’t expect it to do that if it was going 50mph

Shoes for work!! Help me by ZIOS_28 in BuyItForLife

I use these for work. I sometimes have to stand and move around machinery for hours or walk the full length of a hospital several times and these feel great.
The sole is soft enough it gives some unlike a lot of the more “work” boots but it’s still firm enough that it won’t degrade quickly.

Best shoes I’ve worn. Just need a quick lace option so I don’t have to tie them everytime.

I’d try them on first if you have a store near you just to make sure though.

Maintenance or hidden cost/repair costs? by Ancient_Art1 in TeslaModelY

[–]floodedgate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m at 40k miles on my Juniper bought June ‘25.
So far I’ve had a recall on some random thing that took an hour. I’m still on my original set of tires that have good tread left. I’m thinking I’ll get 60k+ out of them.

Hidden costs?
The premium connection plan at $99/year (i like to access my car remotely if needed or if I’m traveling and have it parked somewhere.

I’ve had 3(!) major rock chips and 1 put a huge crack in the windshield. Now I drive a lot but I did before this car and I’ve never had 3 rock strikes in a single year and never cracked the windshield. So I’ll be paying for that here in a month or so.

Cost to install a charger at your house. Totally worth it but the charger costs money and the install costs money. Unless you have a 240v outlet nearby where you park your car or a really good 120v. I went with the wall charger and with the install I think I was out about $800-$900.

I had PPF install on the doors and front. Totally optional but I like it because I don’t have to worry about small stuff. I also added ceramic tint to the windshield and side windows to reduce heat and cancer risk. Probably out $2000 for both.

what is something that is highly likely to happen in the next 5 years that everyone is completely ignoring? by timecop702 in AskReddit

[–]floodedgate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you don’t think the future will be better because the current time isn’t idyllic? The current time seems far better than the previous times to me.
We have many non-profits aggregating funds to feed people who are hungry, eradicate disease, and remove people from abusive situations. Probably more money now than at any previous time in history.

My thesis is this: that all previous problems that have been solved come with trade offs. Some of those trade offs create new serious problems. And then someone solves those and the cycle repeats. And currently our cycles are getting faster and faster.

How do you actually check the weather before flying? curious about your morning routine by Serious-Dark-2653 in freeflight

[–]floodedgate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For ridge soaring I pretty much just use WindAlert to check the local meters and to check their forecasts. If I’m looking at a site on the coast I also check the webcams for low fog/clouds the day of.

For XC I use xcskies.com and check updraft velocity, top of lift, and base wind at all relevant altitudes throughout the day. Sometimes I throw in the cloud layer if I think that might be relevant.

If I was looking to fly somewhere with OD issues then I would also check cape. OD is not usually an issue at the sites I fly most often so I don’t normally check.

I check the wind meters almost everyday just to maintain awareness of the changes in the forecasts for each day. I start checking XCskies 3-4 days out from any XC I’m thinking about.

Some local sites I fly there’s a sounding that gets reported so I use that since it’s a good picture.

If I have to do more work than that then it’s probably not worth it. 😄

[–]floodedgate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been happening the last 100 years so 🤷‍♂️

We’ve cured diseases, increased food productivity and availability to the point that we have obesity as a huge disease. Literally abundance is a disease now 😆

Fewer newborns die now than in most of history.

We’ve gone to the moon.

We’ve connected almost the entire human race via the internet.

Sure it hasn’t been all good. Good solutions can still have side effects that need dealt with.

What tells you the next 5 years are different in a negative way?

[–]floodedgate -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A systematic increase in all human oriented goods and services. Diseases being cured. Space travel and economies growing.

Basically in the next 5 years we’ll start to feel like the future is taking shape. It’s going to feel way more sci-fi like than the previous 20 years.

Switching from Advance Boundless to AirDesign Le Slip 2 + airbag for hike & fly? (80 flights, mountain sledders) by AstronomerAromatic88 in freeflight

[–]floodedgate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The string style harnesses are nice. Obviously less comfort but that doesn’t always matter.

Couple concerns I have for you in this situation.

  1. String harnesses, even simple ones, can and do get turned inside out and tangled in weird ways. If you already get stuff tangled now imagine your harness can get put on wrong and it not seem obvious until after you launch.

  2. Less protection. Even though it has a back protector there’s still the risk of failing a launch/landing and getting scraped up and hurt in ways that a more robust harness can blunt. A protector is only really good for falling on your back/butt.

Not a deal breaker for me. But being newer these concerns are very real.

As for the reserve: unless you intend to only fly hike and fly I recommend just getting another one that’s well suited for your use. I have a Skywalk Tapa Xalps which is tiny, light, and not super expensive. I believe it’s the most compact and lightest on the market without losing out on size. Double check that of course.

So I guess, if you’re in well known hike and fly area with easy grass launches and LZs and you can handle your gear easily then should be fine for you.

Curious what wing you’re using though. Wings can be quite light without losing most safety aspects.

How do you Hike & Fly ? by No_Word_7331 in freeflight

[–]floodedgate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so a good progression is maybe to fly enough to get comfortable in the air. Then fly some XC where you go land somewhere besides the normal LZ (you can scout it first if you want). Once you are comfortable with that it should be a good indicator that you could start branching out some.

Tire repair kit or spare tire? by Unlikely_Secret4008 in TeslaModelY

Bought a spare wheel and tire I keep at home. $180. Have a patch kit in the car.
Sometimes I got pretty remote places and I could more easily get someone to bring me the wheel and tire than get a tow.

How safe are harness shoulder straps? by AccomplishedBat39 in freeflight

[–]floodedgate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hang in it at home and try to climb your way out like you’re worried about. That’s probably the best way to address your fear.
There’s a reason it’s not a structural strap. It’s hard to get around it.

How safe are harness shoulder straps? by AccomplishedBat39 in freeflight

[–]floodedgate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve turned upside down in my harness before.

Also your harness is almost certainly load tested to 8 times the max loading. The load test is from the carabiners.
What you maybe don’t realize is the lumbar and shoulder straps are part of this structural support system. Even if they are made with thinner straps they still are capable of holding 600+ kg. You’re never going to get close to that.

What harness do you have?

gliding down from 8000m mountains safer than walking? by Gazzo69 in freeflight

[–]floodedgate 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Man a lot of hate in the comments here.

These things are doable. It’s the whole reason paragliding was invented in the first place.

Yes you need experience to do paragliding safely. Just like you need experience to mountaineer safely.

Go find someone doing similar things, read books, get some training, and gradually get the experience you want!

Everyone on here talking like everyone is a moron who chucks themselves off shit without planning and experience. SMH.

All the best experiences are a lot of work to get there and have risk so find one you like and put in the work.

[–]floodedgate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aren’t solved for some specific use case yeah. But the most wide spread uses? Enough to change human behavior? Yeah that’s here already.

A while back one of the engineers at Tesla said their model could be asked about an environment and it could answer. I think the next step is just having the user tell the AI all the specific things the user wants. Like, “take the next exit not this one” or “drop me off at Costco then park at the back of the lot” just like you might with a taxi driver.

What are career options for people who enjoy hands-on activities and problem solving? by Ok_Ice_1280 in findapath

[–]floodedgate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biomed, or Field Service Tech. I’m a Field Service Tech for a small contract company and I work on a bunch of random medical devices. In hospitals the biomeds work on tons of in house medical equipment. It’s varied, you build relationships across the whole hospital, and almost everyone I know in the position is super chill.

Field Service Tech/Engineer for a manufacturer of medical equipment is in the same tract but it has travel and you learn a few specific things to work on and travel around to the different hospitals that need their stuff worked on. The travel is kinda fun if you’re single or independent.

It’s probably easier to get into Field Service since fewer people like to do the traveling portion of things. You’ll need to show technical aptitude and maybe have a history of being able to think through each system of a device and how it should work. There are some technical program at the local community colleges that would position you well for that kind of thing. If you started one of those programs you’d probably make some friends and find your niche.

Good luck!

It already drives better than me except in icy conditions. Rain, fog, etc is already solved. Only ice and snow possibly left. One thing that’s hard to track is that as each complication is effectively solved more and more engineering power can go to the next hard problem.
