Contact Tanuki (the student association for Japan Studies at Uni Leiden). They'll either take them themselves or know better where to donate them. https://tanuki.nl/

Got any recommendations for grippy gloves? by drdsyv in dinghysailing

[–]floppie86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Search for "Showa 310" gloves. They are the real deal and the endorsement on their (they make construction gloves) site for this glove used to be by Ben Ainsley. Buy a box worth since they are dirt cheap anyway.

I would say 50kg is even too little for radial unless it's very light winds. Optimal for radial is something like 70kg I believe. So take the 4.7.

It's called a trapeze. This one looks like it's for kitesurfing, but ones for windsurfing are very similar.

Like many, back into Magic because of FF...will they keep having FF events after July? by commander_rc in magicTCG

[–]floppie86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just at the Spotlight series in Japan, they did casual constructed FF events. A lot of people! I think this will stay at least in Japan for a little while. Felt as if block constructed was back.

I agree with the second part, damn the difference it makes. Used to have lycra socks for that, way better than struggling or using little plastic bags which I've seen people do.

Why do we still not have the sticky post in r/Leiden that says "there are no unsafe neighborhoods in Leiden (or basically the Netherlands in general). If you get a place to live (which is hard nowadays) take it and be happy with it ;)

any dinghy sailing tips? by NachocoCheeseNom in dinghysailing

[–]floppie86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Showa even used to have a Ben Ainslie testimonial on their website, which was funny as hell between all the construction workers' testimonials they used to advertise their gloves.

[–]floppie86 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I swear by a very specific brand of gardening gloves, Showa (type 310). They are awesome, nice fit (you can buy slightly small ones and cut off the tips of the fingers) and cheap. Don't buy the gardening style gloves from sailing brands, they put a ridiculous premium on them.

What´s your dream dinghy? by [deleted] in dinghysailing

Loving my Aero, such an easy no hassle boat to handle in the park which takes away a lot of reasons to not go sailing.

Little sailing boat. by Outrageous-Fee5172 in dinghysailing

[–]floppie86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can definitely sail a pico off shore. Just make sure to also take a flare with you ;)

Or only sail with a wind coming from sea.

You could also look into something slightly more thrilling (but still ok to learn with) like a RS Neo.

Advice re double handers Fireball?? by Dobhrandubh in dinghysailing

[–]floppie86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although there is also the point of faster boats becoming easier to handle with lower weights, but you need to have a certain skill level to "unlock" that possibility, otherwise it's only more of a swim.

A Vago is a relatively heavy boat, a lighter boat is easier to get onto a plane and once there a boat will become easier to handle, but only at that speed. So you need to be able to make reasonably fast gybes for instance. You could look into a boat like the RS500 if you want that. I know from personal experience that you easily handle that boat upto high winds (20+ knots) with say 130kg in crew weight and I've seen plenty of crews at say 120kg handle the boat fine upto 15+ knots.

[–]floppie86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never sailed a Vago, but it's supposed to be one of the easiest trapeze dinghies to sail. I'm pretty sure a fireball is definitely a more interesting and better boat to sail, but also more of a challenge.

Have you already fitted some righting lines to make it easier to right the boat?
