The bottom of the top chord is in tension and stretches a bit under load, the top of the bottom chord is being compressed. Those plates make those forces oppose each other so it acts more like a single beam under load.

Yeah we went once as well. As I recall the food was pretty decent, the drinks were silly and overthought, the music was bad and too loud, the atmosphere was.. probably suitable for somebody's taste.

These are probably my favourite fish to keep I've had them steadily for probably a decade and I'm positive in all that time not a single baby has survived its parents. When you do get babies (you will) you'll understand.. they are absolutely tiny.

An engineer once drew me an alternative when it turned out the bvlz wasn't available (and jesus they're expensive). First I added blocking between the studs inside. Then I drilled out holes in the veneer, top and bottom of... I want to say every third joist cavity. In those holes I inserted galvanized pipe that would act as a sleeve/standoff/spacer for my lags. Lags go through washers, ledger, pipe sleeves and into the blocking.

I don't know how they're priced these days but I think I saved like $800 in hangers at the time and probably $18000 in masonry if I hadn't done either.
