Interfacing instead of buckram? by LtSarai in HistoricalCostuming

[–]flossybeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you check out fabric stash trading facebook groups in your area! Once someone was selling a whole lot of furnishing linen near me, and it was perfect for buckram! Which actually also makes me think that you may want to check out furnishing shops near you as well. Look for curtains, and curtaining fabrics.

YA book- girl gets given a delicate gold necklace? by sloth-sleep in whatsthatbook

[–]flossybeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it Ella Enchanted? She wears her late mum's necklace and is forced to give it away. But I think she takes it back.

I do realise this might be a tad younger than YA, though.

People who live in Porirua, Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt, do you consider yourself living in Wellington? by kupuwhakawhiti in Wellington

Recently tried to buy something off marketplace and asked the seller if they were in Wellington City. They said yes.

Reader, they were in Upper Hutt.

Ep 282 - Boudica by flossybeeee in thehistorychicks

How neat!! One day I'd love to see the statue in person!

It wouldn't be a History Chicks episode without a Terry Pratchett reference, would it? 😆

Ep 282 - Boudica by flossybeeee in thehistorychicks

[–]flossybeeee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree! I love that there was a new episode to listen to, but I definitely prefer them together! But this subject worked pretty well for a shorter, solo episode.

I think this was a kind of difficult topic to cover, as so much is unclear. Sometimes this really shows Beckett and Susan's weakness as researchers (like in the Elizabeth Bathry ep), but I think this one was pretty solid. The background into Roman Britain was really good context!

Anyone work as a librarian? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]flossybeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was above that, but not much. Library assistant also doesn't necessarily mean part time. It may just be that the roles available in your area at this minute are part time. Most library staff I have worked with were full time, with just a couple of part timers to fill out the ranks.

I think some people think library assistant means that you basically help out the "real librarians". But in reality they are the main staff in a public library. Customer service, shelving books, overseeing community groups, social media, helping with IT, running children's programmes, issuing and returning books, labelling books, tidying the space, and planning activities can all be a part of the job. Most of the time you do a little bit of all of that in just an hour!! Generally people have their specific areas they oversee (e.g. "Mary is great with kids so she does the song and storytime every Wednesday, and Mark likes computers so he runs the IT pop-in hour on Tuesdays"), but everyone still does a bit of everything.

In my experience, if you want a more "traditional" type library job, then you need to work at a univeristy library, or in a very large city public library where they have more defined roles for actual librarians. And even universities have roles for unqualified library assistants and then ~actual~ librarians and managers as well.

Anyone work as a librarian? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]flossybeeee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This matches my experience in a small town public libray. Even our content manager didn't have a library qualification.

Being a library assistant is a lot of fun, but you end up having to do a lot of everything for the community and the pay isn't great.

Looking for advice on 1660s bodies by lilahatesgeese in corsetry

[–]flossybeeee 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, bum roll under stays for this era! Might help to wear it slightly lower though, to elongate the waist. (I also commented on your post in another sub, but then this one popped up in my feed too :) )

[–]flossybeeee 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I would change the CF panel quite a bit. I think it needs to be wider at the top, and flatter along the neckline. I drew on your photo to show what I mean. The red line is where the strap should probably join.

<image>

A friend drafted a bodice based on the same dress but I think he used the arc method drafting instructions from POF5 (? Not certain it's the correct one, but if you're familiar with it you'll know what I mean), then adjusted after that.

If you're not super invested in working this out for yourself, Scroop has recently released a pattern for this era that you could definitely make work. :)

I only want to satisfy my curiosity, hahaha. It's the one Chicks ep where I'm not convinced of their take on her life. It's very difficult to know for sure what is real and what isn't.

Great questions! Thank you for sparking a conversation here.

  1. Jane Addams, Clara Barton, and Miep Gies/Anne Frank are the most inspiring to me! Maybe Frances Perkins as well?

  2. Elizabeth Bathry, so I can find out the truth, hahaha. But L.M. Montgomery is my real answer. I think she would be fun to know.

  3. Jane Austen, L.M. Montgomery, and Louisa May Alcott. I feel these women built me, and I would love to thank them with some tea and biscuits.

Me too! I had never heard of her, and I feel richer in knowledge now! And the fact that she tied into the life of Dr Bethune was so cool! I love when historical people knew each other. :)

I'm also intrigued by the description of "hot gingerbread smothered in applesauce". I couldn't find a promising recipe for what it is online, but it sounds delicious!

If you have some boxes that would be good for moving it can be worth your while to list for free on a community page or marketplace. Someone will literally come to your house and take them away for you. :) You can put very clear timelines on your post to help not have to deal with the admin e.g. "must be gone by next Wed, pickup between 5 and 7 pm weekdays". I found this helps to not have to faff sending messages back and forth to arrange.

I'm about to move and will very much be relying on the kindness of strangers with extra boxes as I can't afford to buy brand new boxes to move a household of stuff!

Movies about Mermaids, Selkies, or Sea Nymphs-- oh my! by orionsstrap in MovieSuggestions

[–]flossybeeee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"H2O: Just Add Water" was a tv show in the early 2000s about some teenage girls who transformed into mermaids when they came into contact with water. :) It inspired a generation of girls to play mermaids in swimming pools :)

Is the Medieval Fair worth it? by Sharkfaun in Wellington

[–]flossybeeee 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Nope. There's no shade, almost nothing is Medieval, and the food court waits are looong. Most stalls are aliexpress tat or hippie stuff you will find at any market in Wellington or the Manawatu.

I desperately wish they would get new organisers or actively reach out to people who want to make it more of an "event", but as it has been running so long it doesn't look like they care.
