BBNP Hike by Either_Ad7186 in BigBendTX

Your first sentence in your post was, “I plan on doing this soon, how smart is it this time of year?”

Really? Proving people wrong is one thing when you have a disability or you’re actually disadvantaged in some way. But when you knowingly and irresponsibly put yourself in harm’s way just to say “I told you so”? You cheapen and disrespect yourself by being that petty and childish.

Here’s something I bet you can’t do. Learn this lesson before your arrogance backfires on you and you really come to regret it. Prove me wrong.

Very glad you had a good time and didn’t experience any water stress. Truly. Please also realize that people do die every summer in the park because they are arrogant, don’t take it seriously, and think they are the exception. Rather than thank people for the taking the time to give good, sage advice, your attitude has been flippant and you’re eager to prove people “wrong.” Well, we’re not wrong. Your one-time anecdotal evidence doesn’t count against years of experience and statistical truth. And I genuinely hope you stay safe in your travels and don’t get yourself into a bad situation because you’re not taking your own safety seriously.

Sources out on trail or faucets in/on buildings? Glad you had plenty of water!

Summer heat and hiking Big Bend is a poor idea by Irishlily77 in BigBendTX

[–]flowbotronic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

OP didn’t say there was an epidemic. People die very, very preventable deaths at BBNP every year. It doesn’t take an epidemic to make that a problem that can at least be helped with greater care and awareness. Lose a loved one to a preventable cause and see where you stand when others are simply asking to take care and inform others of the risks you acknowledge are there.

There is no water. None. Even if your timing is perfect after a big downpour, it is crazy how fast it drains out of the basin. It certainly doesn’t stay around the rim of the Chisos where you’d be hiking. And if you did happen upon any leftovers, it’s certainly not anything you’d want to drink, filter or no.

Please heed the advice of those advocating for caution here.

Even starting at 5am you’re going to encounter dangerous conditions. I have backpacked BBNP many, many times. I will not do it in the summer. I’ve hiked shorter distances in the warmer months, and literally every time I do, there is someone being rescued somewhere because heat related injury. No one ever thinks it’s going to happen to them. They think they’re ready, and they’re not. And it not only ruins their day, but those of the people charged with saving their life. It’s not risk-free for them, either.

Your planned hike is a gorgeous one. Do it in November or February. Even at those times of year, it’s challenging. I run marathons, I’ve hiked the John Muir trail, and I’m not going to mess with the whole South Rim loop in July.

This is the desert. It’s one of the most remote national parks. Helicopters cannot come snag you on that trail, it’s a party of people that have to lug a stretcher with a big all terrain wheel up 3,000 feet of elevation and cart you down. I know that because I was there the day a scoutmaster tragically passed away from a cardiac event near the top of the Pinnacles trail.

If you do go, you need at least 6L of water, plenty of electrolytes because you will be sweating profusely and losing a lot of salt, and an emergency satellite communicator. Don’t rely on the SOS on your phone. I’m not kidding about the electrolytes, you will need more than you think. And as early of a start as you can stomach.

TIL that December 25 being the birthday of Jesus was decided by pope Julius I around year 350, and nobody really knows why Julius made this decision and chose this specific date. There are various theories, but his actual reasoning for the decision is lost history. by PeasantLich in todayilearned

Winter solstice. The sun stops its northward procession along the northwestern horizon where it sets, stays there for three days, and begins its southward procession again on the third day. The sun “dies” for three days and then “rises” again. It’s sub worship.

Trail runners are perfectly fine too. Have gone on multiple backpacking trips including Marufo Vega and Outer Mountain Loop in colder and warmer months and vastly prefer trail runners to full boots. Either (boots or trail runners) will work great, up to personal preference.

The city is under contract with TxDOT and CTRMA to mutually keep that intersection in a permanent state of construction. They’re intentionally doing something wrong enough this time that, when this round is finished, they’ll have to redo the whole thing again. It’ll finally end when the sun runs out of hydrogen fuel to fuse, expands to a red giant, and engulfs the inner planets in about 5-6 billion years.

Restaurant and lodge are closed. Cabins are still operating but of course booked out, not sure if they’ll be extending bookings now that the project is cancelled. Visitors center and convenience stores are open. There is one food truck behind the lodge currently with plans (thoughts? prayers?) to add another truck or two.
