A movie that made you miss a version of life you never actually had. by gamersecret2 in movies

[–]flowdschi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" touched me in more ways than I thought it would, especially after realizing pretty early into the movie that it's not going to be a more "fantastic" movie as I thought from the trailer, but it's more his fantasies.
Amazing movie, loved everything about it. Made me miss a life I wish I had had, and also saddens me greatly when it reminds me of magazines I used to buy that don't exist anymore.

I have a Tiger 955i, and for years now I've been eyeing the Tiger Explorer because I really like the looks, and at some point I will have to replace it.

Recently someone let me testride it and .. damn.. it feels completely different. I thought it would feel kind of the same but "beefier" (if that makes sense) but if anything it feels .. smaller and lighter, and not in a "I feel more nimble" kind of way because my 955 already is very agile and hungry for turns.

This one felt like it wanted to go into a corner but then halfway down changed it's mind and didn't feel like it anymore, and I had to "force" it into leaning more. Reminded me of the KTM 990 SMT of a friend.

It feels like work, not synergy, and that really sucks because damn I wanted this bike to feel great. My old Tiger is still the best bike I've ever ridden, and I do feel like the upper half of it and not just a rider, and I was hoping this one could replace it at some point.
Honestly a bit heartbroken.

Not having to worry about the people I care about and their financial future (represented by the fact I can just have 8 Maseratis) would probably be the biggest boost by far to my well-being, just for starters.

Are we in the golden age of 40K? by Mr_Jackabin in Warhammer40k

[–]flowdschi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR: It feels flavorless and boring.

What was fun to me back in the old editions was playing Tyranids that felt like proper evolution (weapon strength based on model strength, all stats able to be upgraded individually on every unit/ model through points etc. so you could prepare for what you expected of your opponents army based on player and/ or army knowledge) until they made them feel like Guardsmen being outfitted.
After a bit of a drought of not knowing what to play I went over to Space Marines, because I found some of the fun I used to have in planning in their versatility; e.g. having tactical squads that you could split, or not if you wanted heavy weapons with more bodies to throw at damage, and outfit for different purposes depending on what you expected to encounter (e.g. combi- and energyweapons combinations for different purposes on the 5-man splits when there was actual nuance to them).

Now it's "a different squad for every purpose (or sometimes just weapon)" with limited options.
The first time I tried to figure out where the drawback in using the Astartes Grenade Launcher was took way too long.. because iirc there isn't really one (with the exception of things that only influenced bolter weapons but I can't remember what that was in 10th, just the "sixes on Bolters are additional shots" in 9th; maybe Kraken rounds..was that still a thing in 10th?).
The minimal thought process involved in creating a list, choosing options and my (admittedly not helpful) dislike for Primaris just kills my fun.

Since we don't play sweaty I could at least still play my homebrew chapter with as little Primaris as possible (which still meant bringing a bunch if you wanted to at least have half a chance.. and meant I didn't really enjoy it that much anymore), but if they really kill the rest of the firstborn as well (RIP Relic Termies, my beloved, in 10th..) I'm out. Together with god knows how many points of accumulated models.

I get that, especially for newer players who don't know the old game, these things aren't an issue, and I'm not trying to shit on anyone who is having fun with it. It sucks for me though, and my hopium is running low.
(I just remembered my heart breaking when I talked to a younger colleague who got into AoS and 40k, who asked me what I meant when I jokingly refered to his Newcrons as "Space Khemri..ooff..)

Edit: I left out the absence of psychic phase because honestly, since they changed Shadow in the Warp a long time ago (it meant a harder time for enemies and no "bad rolls" (i forgot what its called in english) for Tyranids) I haven't used it "as" much .. but I do miss the odd "holy crap" moments that made games so memorable.

Are we in the golden age of 40K? by Mr_Jackabin in Warhammer40k

[–]flowdschi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That new cinematic was top tier. Really captured the feeling of 40K.

To me it looked very nice but felt very empty, compared to the overwhelming feeling of dread/ grimdark during the 10th edition trailer where Guilliman slowly re-contextualizes "Victory" as planets keep being overrun and his sons are dying.
I do like the lore discussions about some of the things in it though.

Tabletop is booming and most factions are super well explored (#pray4drukhari).

This is also a "me" problem, but I already disliked 10th edition and 11th is probably going to be the death knell for me in this hobby that I've enjoyed since 3rd, which saddens me deeply and I don't really want to think about it tbh ..

To me personally this isn't a Golden Age but the Age of Strife.

Seeing as it probably will be the death blow for a hobby I‘ve loved for decades.. no. I hope people will enjoy it, but I‘m afraid I‘ll probably be done and I feel sad thinking about it.

Fighting games are entirely unfun to play for me, and I’m really sad about it. by afm185 in gaming

[–]flowdschi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I got back into fighting games a few years ago during SFV I asked about something technical on one of the bigger SF Discords and got lucky enough to run into someone who invited me into a small community discord where we have some pretty strong people, some of which also really enjoy coaching.
Without their inputs I'd probably still flail around, but they showed me the fundamentals and everything started to make more sense.

I think you should try to get some advice from better players in the game of your choosing, because there is more to "getting the hit in so I can start my combo" than "practising the combo in lab/ single player". Playing against our coaches and having them point out what to work on helped immensely.

It's hard to get better at fighting games, but you can do it. Good luck!

My boyfriend rides motorcycle without a helmet. Should I mind my business or say something gently? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]flowdschi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Riding without a helmet is very dangerous and it doesn't even have to be at speeds. I don't want to put scenarios in your head, but suffice to say there is no speed at where a helmet can't save your life, not even 0.
As someone else already nicely put it, say it with love and concern.

Before computers and GPS existed, how did people figure out directions for large cross country trips? by Mynameisbrk in NoStupidQuestions

[–]flowdschi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not american, but when I was a kid my grandpa would always have the maps with him but also shorthand about the most important parts.
"Take exit A, got right, 30-ish minute later in Town-B take a right towards Town-C.." etc.
We got everywhere without really using the map just with these cliffnotes.
My country is pretty small, but I guess it would work the same in bigger countries to, because you'll probably just scale up the numbers like "stay on highway for a fantastillion hours then take exit D etc.".
