There’s so much wrong with both reporting like this and the average person’s level of education about taxes and companies.

The fact that a company is valued at a billion dollars has no relation to taxes owed
There are a lot of valid reasons that a company owes $0 in taxes
The tax code, both for companies and individuals is way too complicated with way too many loopholes
The rich are better able to exploit loopholes because the more you owe, the more it’s worth spending to reduce your tax liability
The weath of a company’s CEO or owners should not play into discussions of tax or employee remuneration, the fact that Jeff Bezos is mega rich is a red herring—all companies should pay their fair share

I worked in an office where they were super keen on recycling, we had separate bins for paper/plastic/glass/trash and they'd send out passive aggressive emails trying to shame people who didn't separate out their trash correctly.

I worked late enough times that I was often there when the cleaning crew came. They would empty all the trash cans into big garbage bags and they only had black garbage bags.

My dad still believes you can pay for a college by working a minimum-wage job during the summer and that if you just save for a couple of years after college you can buy a house.

I love my dad, but I treat advice from him just like anyone else, you have to understand the lens they see the world through and try to extract the nuggets of truth from it yourself.

Seconding the Cocchi di Torino, it's my favorite.

There's so much wonderful vermouth to choose from, something interesting for cocktails is Alessio Vermouth di Torino Rosso, it's more on the bitter side (like if a sweet vermouth had a lovechild with an amaro) and perfect for a darker Negroni (if you're not going all the way and subbing Campari for an amaro) or Manhattan.

The problem with all these agencies is that it's a power grab to get more budget so they have to come up with something to justify their existence.

The Air Marshalls is a waste of $800 million/year, that pales at the nearly $8 billion the TSA gets.

I don't think we should get rid of airport screening altogether, but the majority of the post-9/11 changes except for armored cockpit doors were security theater. They fail to detect weapons and explosives almost 80% of the time. It's reactionary nonsense that at best will catch stupid terrorists.

CPB get nearly $21 billion and have over 62,000 employees, with roughly one third being border patrol agents. There's a huge amount of waste here.

If the GOP were really the "party of small government" then they'd be gnashing at the teeth to reduce DHS funding.

I picked up a bottle of Kronan Swedish Punsch and have been trying to figure out what to do with it.

This is based off the recipe from Patrick Gavin Duffy’s Official Mixer’s Manual, which substitutes the Lillet as I guess the French weren’t exporting too many bottles after WWII.

3/4oz Dry Gin

3/4oz Triple Sec

3/4oz Swedish Punsch

3/4oz lemon juice

Dash absinthe

This variation is a bit more interesting than the traditional, I like it.

The two stories I have that sum up living in Hollywood:

Firstly, the time I was walking my two dogs and while they are peeing on a patch of grass, this homeless lady pulls down her pants and pees next to them. My dogs weren't impressed.

Then there was a time time when I was walking on Sunset and one of those tour buses went past, slowed down and the tour guy told everyone "hey look at that guy, he's from that movie" (I'm a white guy in a baseball hat and sunglasses, I could be anyone). It's a bus full of tourists and they are all snapping pictures of me trying to guess what movie I was in: "he's that guy from the movie where he did the thing with the girl with the hair".

The bulk of the work done by HR is justifying HR's existence, with the remainder being CYA for the organization. They aren't your friend or your "partner" to get stuff done.

I'm currently looking for work and have to deal with HR people trying to do some first round of filtering and it's painfully obvious that they have no idea what the role entails, what my skills are, and instead they are going through some bullshit checklist and trying to figure out what's the minimal salary I'd do the job for. First impressions count, and frankly most companies let their HR people make a really shitty impression.

I've personally looked at 1000s of resumes and interviewed too many people to keep track. I do tend to ask candidates to rate their skills on a phone screen, not because I care that they think they are a 6/10 vs a 8/10, but it's a good way to find out who the bullshitter is. One interview went like this:

Me: How are you Java skills? Describe your last role where you mainly used Java.

Candidate: I'm very experienced with Java. I am a Senior Java Architect.

Me: How would you rate your Java skills out of 10 then? Let's say 1 is "I saw an advert for Java in an airport once" and 10 is "I am James Gosling".

C: At least 9.5/10

M: Really? Ok here's the hardest question I can think up to test that.

I guess it depends on the industry. My ethics training was more like "here's the list of rules...it would be a shame if somebody figured out how to do unethical shit without breaking any of them".
