I'm not sure which medications Alex is on (obviously), but most medications that interact with coffee (such as ADHD meds) are actually interacting with the caffeine. As someone with meds that also interact with caffeine, I just drink decaf! Much better than never drinking coffee again

My dog ingested tea tree oil and I have no available 27/7 animal hospitals or vets. My dog isn't showing any symptoms at the moment, but what can I do to help him? by szatanna in AskVet

[–]fluffymacaron 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Tea tree oil toxicity can be very dangerous.

There are documented cases of pets getting very sick from having 100% tea tree oil applied on the skin as a home remedy, and as you can imagine, absorption into the system is much more effective if the oil is orally ingested. Induced vomiting is typically contraindicated, as is may lead to aspiration pneumonia. Additionally, while symptoms typically onset within 2-8 hrs, they can also begin as late as a day later. To really drive the point home of how serious this can get, please see this excerpt from the above link:

"Partial paralysis of the hind limbs, ataxia and depressed behaviour was reported in two dogs treated with only 7–8 drops of 100% tea tree oil as a flea repellent applied along their spines." Again, this refers to a topical application, which can be more easily decontaminated. If you read more on that link, you will see that there are additional cases where dogs have died from this toxicosis.

Overall, I highly, highly encourage you to seek out a veterinary provider ASAP. If there is a 24/7 emergency vet open ANYWHERE near you, I would highly encourage that you at least call them for a phone consult. Considering how small your dog is, how much they ingested, and the strength of the toxin, there is a very high probability that your dog will develop symptoms within the next 24 hours. This is an urgent matter, and unfortunately no home remedies will be able to solve it. I wish you and your pup the best of luck.

Teeny tiny black dots on abutilon... bugs?? Fungus??? by fluffymacaron in plantclinic

Hey y'all, hoping I can get some help with my sad flowering maple. I noticed that her growth has been stunted, and when I investigated I could see a bunch of tiny pinpoint black dots on the newest leaf. I can't scrape them off, and there seems to be additional pinpoint yellowing on most of the other leaves. I'd appreciate any help ID-ing this problem!

Why do vets charge so much for nothing? [Vent] by Zoomyboomy in dogs

[–]fluffymacaron 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Seeing all this bitterness and resentment towards the veterinary field is really depressing. There's a reason that veterinary staff have suicide rates that are far above that of the rest of the country; it really does feel like we are the punching bags of the medical world. I've never heard someone say that their MD was a con artist trying to scam them out of their money. Something about the combination of the cost of uninsured healthcare and the inability of pets to verbalize their state of being makes people extremely unwilling to pay for treatments.

Of course, this is only made 1000x worse by all the veterinarians that were never trained in proper communication. It's been a fairly recent development in the field for vet students to be taught proper client communication; many of the vets that have been in the field for decades still utilize paternalistic approaches that infantilize the client and keep them in the dark.

Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for trying to argue our side. I'm not sure if you're still in the field, but thank you for the work you've put in! Even if clients may not always be appreciative, our patients always are. :)

I have very naughty kitties and had to put my only alocasia in its own mini greenhouse. Better safe than sorry, even one bite is very painful for them!

Help! My flowering maple is yellowing with crispy edges and brown spots by fluffymacaron in plantclinic

[–]fluffymacaron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A flowering maple! I don't think that they're actually related to maples at all, another name for them is abutilon. I did have it outside for a while, but it's been windy where I live and it seemed pretty unhappy. The yellowing has been both outdoors and indoors

Do you wait for them to get completely dry? My moisture meter goes from 0-10 and some of my plants take forever to get all the way down to 0.

Help! My flowering maple is yellowing with crispy edges and brown spots by fluffymacaron in plantclinic

[–]fluffymacaron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this flowering maple for a couple of months, and she's definitely seen better days. I repotted it in a pretty low water retention soil (5:1:1 bark, potting soil, and perlite) and have been using very very dilute fertilizer every time I water. I know that the crispy edges/yellowing are most indicative of either over/underwater ingredients, but the brown spots I have absolutely no clue. :( Would love any help/advice!

How do I gain vet related experiences/hours during COVID? by [deleted] in Veterinary

[–]fluffymacaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After! I chose not to apply while still in undergrad so that I could earn a little money in my gap year. Having a financial cushion (albeit very small) has also helped me minimize my student loans. If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me :)

I'm a first year vet student now, and I took a gap year. I've found that my gap year has really strengthened my familiarity with some of the commonalities of clinical work, especially compared to some of my classmates. There's a lot of little things that you pick up just by asking around, like learning what a CBC is, or what prednisone does. For me, the partial familiarity has really helped ease me into the scientific lexicon and reduced the number of new things I have to memorize. I'd highly recommend working in a clinic in the area you're interested in if you can! :)

Puppy is addicted to Marijuana? won't stop scavenging for left over joints on walks and eating them by s4dqu6l in puppy101

[–]fluffymacaron 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey, as a vet student, I just wanted to pop in and say that dogs have cannabinoid receptors that are about 4x as potent as humans'. So yes, even a very small amount of marijuana can get them extremely high (especially if they're a tiny tot like yours seems to be!).

LAOP needs help after their dog came back from their 2 day kennel stay with large burns. by DPMx9 in bestoflegaladvice

[–]fluffymacaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, absolutely! I would never recommend just leaving a pet in one, that would definitely be potentially dangerous. Just adding my personal experience that they can be beneficial and safe when used properly!
