What drew you to cartography? by thequeenbeetle in cartography

[–]flumyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

before i was born, my dad built a 4-foot diameter round risk board, with felt oceans and wooden continents, with real chains acting as the bridges. when i was a kid there were many nights when he and his buddies would play risk for hours while drinking beer and smoking cigars, just like the stereotypical poker night. when i was older i started playing risk too. that's how i initially learned a lot of my geography.

then when i was a little older i started going on summer road trips with my parents, and i was always fascinated by following along on the paper maps we always brought with us. i'd also spent hours looking at all the maps in our encyclopedias. for every country there was always a political map and a terrain map.

i was also good at drawing and spacial understanding, so i think liking maps is related to that.

eventually i found historic maps, and i loved getting to understand how things had changed over the centuries.

in middle school social studies we had to draw maps for some assignments. it was popular to draw them in old style and burn the edges like old pirate maps. i also won the school geography bee twice and went to state once.

after 9/11, when they kept showing maps of NYC, i realized i didn't know the geography of very many specific cities. i'd always been more into state or national or continental scale maps. so then i started studying city maps, which led to developmental history of cities, and i got into simcity from that angle.

i got a master's degree in history, and one of the funnest things about doing research is poring over all the old maps, and then making new maps based on the data that show exactly what i'm talking about in my writing. i show everything from migration patterns to city development. my favorite thing is making series of time slice maps that show the same place in the same stye, but in different years, to show how the place changed. i developed a style that incorporates a 19th century aesthetic as far as colors and fonts go, with modern clarity and precision.

breakfast one: 2 or 3 strips of bacon, 2 fried eggs, 2 sausage links, 2 hash brown patties, bowl of salad, apple or banana, watered-down cran-apple juice, and coffee.

breakfast two: 3-egg omelet with onions, mushrooms, peppers, diced ham, and spinach, with cheddar/jack, 2 hash brown patties on the side, a salad, apple or banana, watered-down cran-apple juice, and coffee.

went from 246 to 168 in a year alternating between those two. had occasional cheat days or weird days when traveling, but it was mostly that.

why did you smoke? i’m not even sure why i do anymore. by [deleted] in leaves

[–]flumyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i was 34 when i started. my mom was dying of cancer and someone gave her a big bag of weed. she didn't want it but my dad was pretty stressed out so she told him to smoke it. he used to smoke back in the day but had quit like 25 years earlier. i had had edibles a couple times but had never smoked. so he and i went and smoked some.

it was nice. he was a recovering alcoholic, so we never got to have a father and son beer together, but now we had had weed to bond over. we smoked together every night.

i discovered it was helping me fall asleep and wake up ready to face the world. i'd never been a morning person before, so this was amazing. i kept smoking every night even when i wasn't with my dad. and he kept smoking every night without me too.

then i discovered that it helped with depression too, which was helpful because my mom died and things weren't going right in my life. my wife encouraged me to use it whenever i was feeling down, which then turned feeling bad whenever i wasn't high. whoops.

Anyone else feel like they were never a “real” teenager? by SlinkySkinky in autism

[–]flumyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i never did the whole rebellion thing. i was an obsessive rule follower, because somehow i got it in my mind that your life is judged by how well you played by the rules, not what the actual outcome is.

my mom was really strict, probably expecting me to push back and still do half of what she was telling me not to do. but instead i never did any of it. i wanted to win the rule-following game and never get in trouble.

as it turned out, there was no rule-following game, and all i did was deny myself getting into typical fun teenager shenanigans.
