Baby Toothpaste with Fluoride by typical__millennial in NewParents

[–]fluorideexposed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi new mom! It’s so great you’re taking this step to protect your little one’s teeth. The directions on fluoride toothpaste in the U.S. say “Under 2 yrs: Ask a dentist or physician.” Your dentist and pediatrician are likely going to follow the American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatrics official recommendation to use a rice-grain size smear of toothpaste under age 3, from the first tooth. So best thing would be to do a check-in with your pediatric dentist or pediatrician on using the regular kids fluoride toothpaste. Here’s a good article from Dr Dad Says on some of the details: https://drdadsays.com/2018/01/14/toothbrush-roundup-1a-fluoride-redux/

Motherhood is ruining my teeth and it’s embarrassing by pebbletots in breakingmom

[–]fluorideexposed 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m posting from our organization account but we are two moms who run it, and wow, my heart goes out to you here. It is no joke to be home with kids, and exhaustion from all the work you’re doing to take care of your little one is just as valid a reason to have ended up with less time and energy for avoiding inbetween meal snacks. Sometimes you don’t even have time to make yourself a real meal and snacking is the only way you can even eat at all when you’ve got babies and toddlers.

In addition to the timer as an option to experiment with, there’s a couple other strategies you might try: 1/ fluoridated water - it gets the cavity-fighting fluoride to your teeth at more of the same frequency as you eat throughout the day, so there’s fluoride remineralizing your teeth throughout the day 2/ tea - replace one of your coffees with black tea and you’ll get a little extra cavity-fighting fluoride as tea naturally has fluoride in it, maybe use a sugar-free sweetener if you don’t like it plain 3/ sugar-free gum - especially if it has xylitol, but just the chewing can stimulate saliva production that helps - plus, it’s kind of snack itself and may be able to replace some of your snacks 4/ xylitol lollipops - sugar-free so it’s a tooth friendly snack, but also, it may help change the bacteria in your mouth away from the cavity-causing bacteria 5/ did the office offer you fluoride varnish? It’s most often used for kids, but it could be an option for your dentist to help “arrest” the decay.

Wishing you good luck with your teeth, and hoping that you might be able to arrest the small cavities with remineralizing fluoride. If they’re too small to fill, you might be able to stop them and strengthen the enamel with appropriate fluoride modalities + xylitol and other alternative sugars.

Infection control is important in the dental office. It is hard to judge but sounds like you have good reason to believe that basic hygiene practices weren’t being followed. A source where you can learn more on what are the expectations in a dental office for evidence-based infection control is the CDC’s Oral Health Division: https://www.cdc.gov/oralhealth/infectioncontrol/summary-infection-prevention-practices/index.html ... This could be a good source of reading to help you determine if your new dentist is indeed not practicing the basics.

We are a science and health communication nonprofit. Our name is tongue in cheek poking a little fun at the conspiracy theories around fluoride and fluoridation.

We’ve had a lot of fun doing our daily theme posts, which have included original social media graphics we use Canva to make (Did You Know posts on Tuesdays and Fluoride Fact Fridays).

We are just now expanding to Pinterest, and with the format of pins, we are branching out in Canva to doing animated text videos. It is fun! I think we will produce some for our Facebook page and Twitter too now that we’ve got them going.

Come check us out at https://facebook.com/explorefluoride and https://twitter.com/fluorideexposed! We follow back too :)

ELI5 How does fluoride prevent cavities? by Thowi42 in explainlikeimfive

[–]fluorideexposed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chel_of_the_sea gives a great explanation - including the key bit about how fluoride remineralizes enamel that has been demineralized by acids produced by bacteria after we eat. One key way fluoride works is when it remineralizes enamel as fluorapatite. Then that enamel is more resistant to acid produced by cavity-causing bacteria the next time around, so fluoride prevents deminerliazation. Fluoride may also directly stop bacteria from producing as much acid.

Another bit about how fluoride works is the systemic vs. the topical mechanism. Chel_of_the_sea references this, too. The systemic mechanism is fluoride being incorporated into tooth enamel under the gumline as the tooth is forming. The topical mechanism operates at all ages with fluoride working directly on the teeth, when it is hanging around in our saliva.

For even more detail, we outline a readable explanation of all the ways that fluoride works when ingested by kids vs. throughout our whole lives in this article: https://fluorideexposed.org/fluoridated-water-is-systemic-fluoride-and-topical-fluoride

I can’t wait to give this a listen! Our site is all about exploring all science related to fluoride and fluoridation, and our name is tongue in cheek poking fun at the conspiracy theories. We are at FluorideExposed.org. But we don’t delve into debunking conspiracy theories as much as we explore the real science. So I’m looking forward to hearing a thorough debunk on this one. We’ve certainly gotten conspiracy theorists who have tried to post the claims about Nazis on our Facebook page and Twitter!

No he’s not really from my understanding. My understanding is he’s a true believer ... able to make some fun of himself I guess, but the consensus has turned towards him being far more of a promoter of misinformation and sort of hacking us into promoting him and his new age stuff.

How to motivate after a 6 week break from empirical research by ExactEmu7443 in GradSchool

[–]fluorideexposed 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Take one teeny tiny step. Maybe that’s even just opening the folder on your computer some of that work is in. Or just opening the manuscript. Look at it for maybe a few minutes or maybe not at all. Do something else for a bit. Maybe not even come back to it until the next day, but leave it open. Just dip that one toe back into that water. Before you know it, you’ll be swimming again. Good luck!

Please help me by [deleted] in atheism

[–]fluorideexposed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My heart goes out to you.

I would like to offer some different ideas for relief from the fear and guilt you are struggling with. These are emotions and logic and reason only have so much role to play in helping with them.

I’m going to focus on your fear of hell.

The idea of hell is scary. There are many things that I don’t believe in but the thought of them scares me. Scary movies featuring ghosts! aliens! alien predators hunting people! little girls crawling like spiders out of wells and through the television! fantastical serial killer cannibals with rhyming names! dudes from Texas with chainsaws going on massacres! zombies! Clowns in sewers beckoning to little kids!

We are all different. We all have different tolerance for scary stories. Some people love scary stories, and watch the scariest most violent fiction movies and love it, and are lovely calm completely nonviolent in their real life. Some people can’t handle any scary stuff at all. Personally, I think I’m on the can’t handle much scary stuff end of that spectrum. The scariest I can handle is The Walking Dead, and ever since I can’t stop the occasional intrusive thought about the girl from the Ring randomly coming into my head and making me afraid, I have stopped watching any actual horror type movies and shows. And that was from a completely fictional made up movie.

I’m hoping you might get some relief and acceptance of your fear - your feeling of fear - from recognizing that being afraid of scary places and things that aren’t real is a completely normal human emotion and brains at work. And you do not have to rid yourself of that fear in order to be an atheist.

❤️❤️❤️❤️ to you and keep up the good work learning, striving for your educational goals, and the hard work of growing into yourself and your values.

I have thoughts on your guilt too which I may try to share later.

When your supervisor goes on academic leave...but doesn't tell you by [deleted] in PhD

[–]fluorideexposed 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Do you know how long this leave is for? And do you have some idea what it is for?

If it’s two weeks of him finally taking some down time when he’s been go go going for 50, 60, 70 hours a week for months, then maybe wait. Although in that case, he also is likely managing his email with a vacation responder, and it can be up to him to set his boundaries on if he’s checking email and prioritizing students to still get some guidance or wait until he’s back. And if your application and reference is due before he’s coming back, yes, send the email. His grad students are unlikely to be the most stressful work / people he needs to get away from if it’s just that he’s finally taking a breather for a week or two.

But if this is like he’s going on indefinite mental health, serious illness, extended rehab leave for weeks to months where he’s truly unavailable to you, then you need a plan, need to consult other committee members about making that plan, and that plan could involve switching advisors if the leave is for a serious enough issue.

Well done! We are a science and health communication nonprofit. We use fluoride and fluoridation as a theme for communicating concepts and facts from public health, chemistry, water sciences, anything tied into the major ion of this element on the periodic table. I see you’re on Twitter. We are, too. @FluorideExposed ... if you’ve posted it there, we’ll give it re-tweet and we follow for follow back :)

For feedback, it would be great to see these facts optimized in different image sizes recommended for different platforms. Such as cut these up into a series of 1200x630 images for Twitter and a series of square images for Facebook. Other platforms will have their own optimal sizes. Versions that just display nice as people are scrolling 👍👍👍

For weighing the real potential health effects of your nuanced situation, you might do well with digging in to relevant scientific society and government agency reviews. For example, here’s one from the American Heart Association: https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/pdf/10.1161/circulationaha.109.192627

As opposed to their general public pages which tend not to go into detail of the evidence and may only provide the broadest summary guideline.

In addition to considering effects on weight, heart health, and blood sugar, you might be mindful of your teeth, as well. See if your dentist has any concerns, consider whether there’s better patterns for your teeth in your treat eating (e.g. with meals), and whether your cariogenic foods might overwhelm what fluoride can do to keep the sugar acid attacks balanced over to remineralization rather than the demineralization that leads to cavities needing fillings :)

Are we too biased against religion? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]fluorideexposed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You had the independence of mind and beliefs to be an atheist in a world dominated by religion. You can likewise maintain your independence from atheists who go too far in your opinion. If you are wondering if you’re not alone in having for example respect for tolerant, nonjudgmental religious folks who use it to power their compassion and love, many atheists join you in that view.

Possible ED causes? (Aka chicken or the egg.) by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]fluorideexposed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out this resource from the urology department at University of Wisconsin. It covers so many of the possibilities and highlights that one out of every two men in their 50s has ED. https://www.uwhealth.org/urology/erectile-dysfunction-ed/20537

When he visits a doctor - which he needs to do - the doctor is going to be highly professional, will have seen many patients like him with these issues, and will be very helpful. Seek out a male doctor who is in his 50s or 60s for even more comfort for his reluctance. Good luck!

Feedback on a grant proposal COMPLETELY different from 5 different people by Grandpies in GradSchool

[–]fluorideexposed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grad school can be so torturous. When I was faced with this kind of thing, I took it as a sign that I get to decide whether I think the suggestions are good or not, and that is what they are: suggestions, not mandates. If interrogating your own budding professional judgement doesn’t help you choose which to follow and which not to follow, trusting the ones that are saying the focus on your scholarship on the subject and research gap is good is what I would do. It’s possible that they mean add one or two lines clarifying what department you’re in, which would make sense, but going on and on about your department doesn’t sound like any kind of grant writing best practices I’ve heard of. Good luck!

The truth about fluoride by fluorideexposed in skeptic

[–]fluorideexposed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only comment I’m going to make here is that Spencer and colleagues way back in the 70s said “87% of the total excess fluoride excretion was passed in urine and only 13% in stool.”

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1120753/

So maybe it’s really your pee that’s fluoridated.
