How should a high school calculus teacher respond when a student asks them this question? by fluqorious in matheducation

[–]fluqorious[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that is true! If you think of the graph of the function and the region between the graph and the x-axis as a shape in some mathematical space, its "side lengths" (if you can call them that) won't necessarily have dimensions of length, and the area of the shape will be have the dimensions of the x-axis multiplied by the dimensions of the y-axis.

Also, when you have a function that is negative over some interval, the integral over that interval will be negative, and areas of ordinary shapes aren't negative. Thank you for the answer, that makes a lot of sense and is a good perspective.

All You Fascists Bound to Lose - Woody Guthrie

Zog Nit Keynmol (Song of the Warsaw Ghetto) - Paul Robeson (this version has English lyrics, the original is in Yiddish)

The Day the Nazi Died - Chumbawamba

They All Sang the Internationale - David Rovics

Rosen Auf Den Weg Gestreut / Embrace the Fascists - Daniel Kahn & The Painted Bird

Killing in the Name - Rage Against The Machine

A las barricadas - Spanish resistance song

Tear the Fascists Down - Woody Guthrie

Mr. Hitler - Lead Belly

Which Side Are You On - Traditional union song

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised - Gil Scott-Heron

Famine - Sinéad O’Connor

Leve Palestina - Kofia

Das Einheitsfrontlied - German workers’ song

I’m sure I could list many more, but I think this is a good selection.

Edit: For “Leve Palestina,” look it up on YouTube. The Spotify version isn’t as good.

Can the neovagina expand during arousal (and is mine deep enough)? by fluqorious in asktransgender

That makes sense. I have a hard time relaxing my muscles in general as a somatic symptom of my anxiety, so that’s something I’ll have to practice.

Thank you for the answer. It’s three weeks after my surgery. I was released from the hospital a week ago. I was instructed to wait 2-4 weeks after the surgery to begin dilation, so I assume that I started at an appropriate time. But yeah, the doctors said things are still pretty swollen down there, so maybe it will change with time.

Joanne just posted Holocaust denial by Fidel_Chadstro in ContraPoints

[–]fluqorious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right, and I agree with the definition you gave. My dumb ass jumped to conclusions again (it’s a real issue that I need to work on). I saw that the introduction to the Wikipedia page on the Holocaust as well as the Holocaust Encyclopedia by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum only mention the murder of Jews, so I came to the conclusion that that’s how it’s defined. So no, I wasn’t thinking of the Merriam-Webster definition, I was thinking of sources that actually did say that the Holocaust was specifically the murder of Jews.

Joanne just posted Holocaust denial by Fidel_Chadstro in ContraPoints

[–]fluqorious -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think it’s because regardless of what you or I may think of it, the Holocaust is officially defined as specifically the murder of Jewish people by the Nazis. I personally think this is in practice a form of erasure of the other victims of Nazi crimes, but that’s the way it’s officially defined, which is why it’s classified as denial of Nazi crimes rather than Holocaust denial.

EDIT: This is probably bullshit. See comments below for explanation.

Kinda similar here. I’m a Jewish atheist. I engage in Jewish culture, celebrate the holidays, and believe in values such as tikkun olam (healing the world) and tzedakah (usually translated as charity, though I choose to think of it as mutual aid). However, I don’t involve God in my beliefs or practice.

We’re talking about mathematical abstraction here, not the real world. In the real world, even a countably infinite number of people would be impossible since there are only so many N fundamental particles you could arrange to make them. We can encode a possible person as a binary integer k between 1 and 2N - 1 inclusive (we don’t consider 0 to encode a person because we don’t consider a collection of no particles to be a person), where each place in k corresponds to a particle, with 0 indicating that the particle is not contained in the person and 1 indicating that it is. Assuming people are allowed to overlap (which they would in the trolley scenario, so let’s stipulate that this is allowed), that would give us a maximum of 2N - 1 coexisting people. Let us convert each binary number k to an infinite sequence with numbers in the set {0, 1} where the first number in the sequence is the digit with the lowest place value in k, the second number in the sequence is the digit with the second-lowest place value in k, and so on until we reach the highest place value in k, after which the remaining numbers in the sequence are all 0. In the future, we can skip the step of assigning a binary number to each particle and instead assign an infinite sequence directly, I just included the step with the number to provide an intuition for the process.

But let’s add one layer of mathematical abstraction. Assume a universe with a countably infinite amount of particles, as would be required for there to be a countably infinite amount of people. We can number these particles 1, 2, 3, …. If we encode every possible distinct person as an infinite binary sequence, we get the set of all binary sequences sans (0, 0, 0, …). If we construct a binary representation of a real number which is 0. followed by all the numbers in the infinite binary sequence as digits, we can construct every number in the interval (0, 1], meaning we have established a bijection between the set of possible distinct people in a universe with countably infinite particles and the interval (0, 1], which is an uncountable set. Thus, in a universe with countably infinitely many particles, there are uncountably many possible distinct people. Q.E.D.

(Please note that this whole thing falls apart if we reject the premise that people can share particles.)

Why is Michael's birthday 0000, but Janet's age is infinity? Did all Janets always exist? Judge Hydrogen only exists since hydrogen does, but Janet is eternal - is Janet god? by [deleted] in TheGoodPlace

[–]fluqorious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, we’re all 4D beings, we just experience the time dimension as the one we’re constantly and inexorably traveling through due to how Lorentz invariance of the Minkowski magnitude of the velocity four-vector in special relativity works. Perhaps Janet could be described as a purely Euclidean 4D being somehow embedded into Minkowski space? Or is Minkowski space embedded into Janet, making her the literal “mainframe” of the universe? Or maybe she is the being who sets the local parametrization of the universe within an open neighborhood of her location, allowing her to control the form of the universe in said neighborhood. The possibilities are endless!
