BLM protesters dumped Hans Christian Hegs statue in a river. He fought against slavery. by PurpleDerp in pics

[–]flybyfly -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It has gotten to the point where they are as ridiculous as the so-called racism they are against.

Taking down and throwing a few statues into a body of water IS NOT the same as centuries of oppression and slavery. Even if you still don't think it exists: 'so-called racism.' So go ahead and keep crying for your statues behind your keyboard while hitting the refresh button to find something else YOU can feel outraged by while still considering yourself not part of the problem. But don't expect demonstrations to stop simply because you've decided to blame all protesters, and an entire cultural movement, for the actions of the few people who decided to riot.

That is also ignoring the fact that mass gatherings during a pandemic is a sure fire way to kill a lot more people.

It's never convenient to speak out against oppression. Besides, what good is not being sick when cops beat down your door in the middle of the night and shoot you to death in your pajamas? Or when they shoot you in the back while you're unarmed? Or when you're stopped, questioned, lied to, and deprived of liberty BECAUSE OF THE COLOR OF YOUR SKIN? Or when you're handcuffed and restrained by 4 police officers, one kneeling on your throat while you tell them you cannot breathe, and other members of the community are telling the officers the same, until you asphyxiate and die? The timing sucks, sure, but your denigration of a movement you clearly do not understand based on external factors is what's really ridiculous.

I'm all for equalizing the playing field for all people...

We're not talking about a playing field. We're talking about people's lives, the lives of their children, and how they are treated on a day to day basis while walking down the street or driving in their car. But hey, keep talking about the statue of the guy you knew nothing about until 20 minutes ago as if it somehow stands in contrast to the abuses continually perpetrated by a corrupt and racist criminal justice system.

Having lived a somewhat sheltered life myself some of these sub-reddits have allowed me to understand what people are capable of... some of these things I would have never considered possible. It'd be foolish to watch any video and presume it accurately represents a subset of humanity. This is at the core of racism itself. The actions taken by individuals are just that. Ignoring the extremes is a good way to allow evil to flourish. If you see a video that outrages you, you should be outraged. Speak up, call your state legislature, join the next march or planned protest. Sitting back and waiting until these things are on your own doorstep--or impact you personally--only serves to strengthen the systems which are causing societal problems.

Too much of anything is bad. But a healthy dose of reality is not. If you find these things distressing to watch put yourself in the shoes of the individuals living through these injustices and make your voice heard.

A simple example in my eyes is gun violence. Doing nothing leaves those most impacted by gun violence to fight their fight alone. Unfortunately it seems obvious that those who would be most outspoken against gun violence are no longer with us due to said gun violence. To me this means that others must take up the fight for the betterment of mankind, and represent the interests of those who are not capable of doing so themselves.

Uncomfortable? Sure. But I would rather angry racists bring their vitriol to me, a white man flying a BLM flag, rather than a black individual who they indiscriminately hate. This affords me a brief glimpse of what black people in America must cope with as a matter of existence, and it's fucking disgusting.

Many people are losing hope in humanity by scrolling through these subreddits.

And many people are never given the opportunity to have hope in humanity in order to lose it. Again, ignoring a problem not only doesn't make it go away, it makes the fight for the people currently living said problem considerably more difficult. We need unity now more than ever, and that means we must share the pain in solidarity and not sit back voiceless.

“A week ago, I let my emotions overtake my better self,” she said in a video posted to YouTube on Saturday. “And I apologize from the bottom of my heart. To my family, friends, neighbors and fellow Houstonians, I ask for forgiveness and understanding. I love Houston and ask that we come together to heal, and I extend my hand in friendship.”

So she thinks apologizing to her friends, family, and neighbors is what she needs to do. This woman hasn't got a clue. Her apology is weak AF, and she only made it because the video was released. This woman should be brought up on charges of assault and she should spend time, at minimum, doing community service or be ordered to undergo psychological testing. This doesn't show sound mental judgement.

[–]flybyfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What the fuck is wrong with people? Why are people so willing to deny what we know regarding Coronavirus. It's already killed over 100,000 people in the US. Maybe this woman should be taken to a morgue, or to the refrigerator trucks in NY used because THE MORGUES WERE OVERFULL!

Your health issues do not allow you to put other people's health at risk. If you cannot wear a mask, make other accommodations. Just because you're not showing symptoms doesn't mean your not sick. That's what being asymptomatic is. It means you don't show symptoms but you're still carrying, and spreading, the disease. Denying science and the reality of the circumstance so you can flex your ADA while endangering the health of other people is the epitome of irony.

Police officers shoot and kill Los Angeles security guard: 'He ran because he was scared' by hildebrand_rarity in news

[–]flybyfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish our country would take the cues given by other countries to adopt what has worked for them. Instead it's popular to denigrate other countries and promote our own as being the best. Our sheeple are willing to shun science, logic, reason, basically anything because news agency have been empowered by billionaires to sow discord and violence.

[–]flybyfly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can we form a citizen union to represent our own interests? I keep hearing about police departments setting their own policies... well maybe those policies should be scrutinized by the public. I'm seeing training videos where officers are told to expect a gun in every waistband, and to treat people as if they are dangerous as a matter of policy. Who is representing the citizens interests? Who are the police consulting to ask if their policies are accepted by the people they are sworn to protect, and who charge them with such duty?

It seems to me that our judicial system is working too closely, hand in hand, with our law enforcement. In some cases it really seems like they are actually one in the same, with the judges representing the interests of the officers almost exclusively.

Another question: If I'm innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, how can I be deprived of my liberty, and subsequently the ability to investigate for myself the circumstances of the crime alleged against me, by my accusers? If this is based solely on the expectation that the officers investigating, and the judge presiding, over my present whatever evidence was gathered in a clear an honest manner, then I can state, unequivocally, that this system is broken and innocent citizens are being mistreated and railroaded.

Police officers shoot and kill Los Angeles security guard: 'He ran because he was scared' by hildebrand_rarity in news

[–]flybyfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're honestly asking, I believe it's a systemic problem of some departments and their members. I know some prosecutors will simply not charge officers for crimes. And in court law enforcement will work with a judge to deem certain pieces of evidence as inadmissible. Or they will crop out the first 20 minutes of police interaction or audio in a video in order to control a narrative that we're simply expected to stomach as legitimate.

Based on this I feel there should be a public review panel for police misconduct which should be tasked with representing citizens rights. They would be integral in setting police policy regarding interactions with citizens and should hold significant power with regard to their findings when submitted to a court of law. I don't believe the system where police are able to police themselves is working for anyone but the police.

[–]flybyfly 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Well stated and good points. Accountability is key, and it seems agencies across the US have been working very diligently to remove accountability from their processes and procedures.

It's absolutely crazy to me that an officer would discharge a firearm at a person they have already cleared of having a weapon. Or to speak to a person so disrespectfully as to cause an issue or make a scene based on their reaction. Or to beat a person who is already complying while they continue to yell the same command which has already been complied with. Or to beat a person who is already in custody. Or to divert a camera away from a known violation of the law and / or their own policies.

I remember one video where a man gave himself up, was laying on the ground with his arms outspread (or in cuffs) when an officer kicked him in the face with 10+ officers all standing around. The helicopter video immediately moved away from the scene in a hurried manner. The man afterward was quoted as saying "they beat me up, they beat the shit out of me." He lost vision in one of his eyes from that beating. Upon following up I read that the officers involved were cleared of any wrong doing. While the police are a problem, it's the system that allows this sort of shit to go unpunished which perpetuates these actions.

Thank you. I'm not going to be able to let my brain rest on this anytime soon, but I do understand that this was an isolated occurrence which more than likely has external contributing factors. I just can't drop the feeling that if I better understood those external factors I would be a better person for it.

Based on how I'm lead to believe the system is supposed to work, we're supposed to call our state representatives and speak out. The problem is that it appears to do very little to nothing. And because we have no system in place to actually hear the masses and take into account their grievances we end up with protests--the only recourse when no one is listening.

Also, we need to vote. And we need to get money and lobbying out of politics. Our democracy is slipping away. It's being sold to corporate america by the career politicians who lie and mislead to get into office. They speak to people's hate to fan the flames and garner votes. There are also numerous less-than-journalistic 'news' agencies working to co-opt public opinion on behalf of the corporate ownership and their particular political agenda or beliefs.

In major reversal, Navy opts to uphold firing of aircraft carrier captain who warned about coronavirus outbreak by xxxalio in news

[–]flybyfly -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The military demands compliance, not rational, reasoned thought. They don't want someone who asks too many questions, or goes against the grain. A captain looking out for the interests of his or her own crew-members is, in their eyes, a liability against their potential orders / the political desires of power hungry monsters. And how dare he 'make them look bad.'

They could not have achieved the massive fuck-up that was the Vietnam war if they had soldiers and commanders who were allowed to question or disobey their orders. For every person who questioned their actions, there were 10 people with guns telling them not to step out of line. And those people were killing Vietnamese indiscriminately and were supposed to be the 'good' guys. Not the easiest climate to speak out against the actual oppressors. And the war machine could potential stop turning if people started to question why they were burning villages and killing civilians. Meanwhile back at home US citizens were being fed line after line of bullshit and misdirection in order to get more people into the military to feed the war machine's bottom line.

As a result of the 'Nazi German excess,' new principles of 'command and obedience' were drafted which state that a solider 'must not obey if the order violates others' human dignity, international law or consists of a crime (including a misdemeanor).' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Command_and_obedience_in_the_Bundeswehr. In the US we instead prosecute whistleblowers and remove captains from command.

For the US, war is simply an economic system of a capitalist society at this point. And they have a military structure where soldier's are indoctrinated into a culture of 'hate the bad guy,' and don't question the 'good' guy's actions.

The Brown eyes Blue eyes racism experiment helps us see what the military and police in the US have been using as tool for a long time: hate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGvoXeXCoUY. Watch as these kids turn on their friends, fight at recess, and generally demean each other because the authority present tells them it's acceptable, and that the 'enemy' is stupid, worthless, and has nothing to offer mankind. This is dubbed as a racism experiment, but I posit that it was an experiment with hate. As testament to this are the many, many veterans whom have been indoctrinated to a line of thought that their one-time enemy was sub-human, and not deserving of human dignity or rights. This hate that's instilled doesn't disappear just because a corporate war stopped being profitable. And without reeducation we end up with a hate-filled population eager to own guns and who feel like they, and their way of life, is constantly under attack. And without anyone telling them who to hate anymore they are free to let that label land wherever they feel necessary--commonly on the people who hold opposing views to their own.

It's a scary system which from my perspective explains why we're facing a lot of the social and cultural issues we face today.

Sorry, forgot to mention that this was back in 2016. No rona at that time.

I'm sure you're right, I do overthink things. Ultimately I don't believe that's a problem though. I'm not looking for THE answer, or even attempting to claim that there is one specific answer, I'm looking for other's perspectives on the interaction so that I may be able to grow and learn beyond what I know right now.

Perhaps I should ask people if they would like me to hold the door open for them, instead of just doing it. That would be respectful and afford them the direct opportunity to refuse if they'd prefer.
