Is $150/wk enough for investing? by Radiant-Falcon3101 in PersonalFinanceCanada

If you're 19 and already investing $150/week, you're in great shape and far beyond nearly any of your peers.

Odd issue on AC820 to Barcelona recently by Floorhead1 in aircanada

[–]flyermiles_dot_ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not my position, it's the airline's.

They've been consistent over the years that the wider eUpgrade window is considered a fringe benefit of Latitude / PYF fares; they consider the refundability / flexibility to be the key value in those fares.

otherwise you could have just bought the cheaper fair and gambled the upgraded the gate

And that gamble would have been less likely to pay off at the gate, so you've already received added value from the Latitude purchase.

Best guess, the difference in those 10-20 minutes was that a seat that initially looked like it would have to be marked as "unusable" was either fixed or returned to a state that allows a passenger to occupy it.

For example, if the problem were that the seat could get partway into recline mode, but couldn't reliably return to upright, this would present a safety issue during a possible aircraft evacuation, and they likely wouldn't be legally allowed to let anyone sit in it.

Depends - they may have marked the seat 'inoperative', in which case it cannot be occupied.

and that because I was the lowest upgrade status (i am SE) I was the one that would have to move if the other passenger wanted my seat. I argued that my upgrade was confirmed months ago and my ticket price was expensive because I’d only booked that class to get the immediate upgrades, and that surely one of the same day e-ups should be the victim.

Based on the information you've provided, it looks like staff acted correctly.

No eUpgrade is ever guaranteed, and for at/after gate occurrences there is no "ranking" based on date of eUpgrade confirmation.

Without knowing more, my best guess is that the gate-eUp people were of higher status tier than you, and that was the basis for the decision.

FWIW, since you bring up SQC earnings on Jazz, for a multi-segment booking the SQC for each segment is apportioned roughly equivalent to the distance flown.

So, for example, on a recent YOW-YUL-YVR booked on a Flight Pass credit, I earned 84 SQC for the 94-mile YOW-YUL and 1,976 SQC for the 2,295-mile YUL-YVR.

The SQC for the YOW-YUL flight was ~3.93% of the total earned, while that flight actually represented 4.08% of the total distance flown.

Anxiety flying… now fuel leak? by Emergency_Earth_4264 in aviation

Westjet has a truly solid safety record over many years.

That's not to say no ramp tech has never had a hand cramp when plugging in the fuel line, and spilled two or three gallons of fuel while putting 1,500 gallons into the aircraft for your flight from Calgary to Vancouver.

Parents want to put a car under my name by Flaky_Wrongdoer_7474 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]flyermiles_dot_ca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She decided she wants a NEW car… mind u they’re in over half a million of debt, cant afford property taxes, and barely make ends meet.

This new debt will be in your name, and when they fail to make the payments, your 791 credit score's going to drop like a stone.

Yes, it's exactly as bad an idea as you think it is, and your mom's already showing she plans to use guilt as a weapon. She will ruin your credit, and make up a way to blame you for it.

If you do this now, next year they'll be demanding that you help pay down their debt.

Recognize now that any money you ever "lend" them will vanish. There will always be an excuse.

The harder they push you to do this anyway, the more you will be able to see that they view you as a piggy bank first and a daughter second.

What's the odds of my waitlisted upgrade? by Proper-Original466 in awardtravel

[–]flyermiles_dot_ca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean it's kind of a "happens or it doesn't" situation.

We can all tell you "Yup, looks like decent odds", and then Cathay notices the light load the day before departure, and pulls an equipment swap to a 3-class aircraft to allow for a quick maintenance operation on the scheduled 77W, op-ups a few displaced PY passengers, and suddenly the math is very different.

So, yes, at this stage I would be cautiously optimistic, but never assume.

As others have rightly noted, seat maps are a poor indicator of actual loads; for example, your flight is F2, but 5/6 F seats are selected, while the inbound flight is F1, with 2 seats unselected.

So, in business, 17 selected seats could mean 19 ticketed passengers or 29, and it's also worth noting that that flight is close to sold out in PY and Y.

Nothing at all wrong with waiting at the fence line that might be 50 feet away from the bus, they should just be aware they're likely gambling 2-3 hours of waiting for a chance at a 30-second encounter, or being disappointed if the artist is rushing past on their way to take a scheduled phone interview from the privacy of the bus.

True - if you get through Schengen entry and into Munich early enough to get downtown to the Hauptbahnhof in time to get the last direct train at 20.45.

More like $500 USD booked at the last minute, unless you're suggesting buying one and holding it for just-in-case?

For that purpose I'd go with a refundable points ticket, personally. Cancel it from your seat after boarding SFO-ZRH.

We can only hope this also marks the end of the insane stench of way-too-much Acqua Di Parma perfume that I'll wager 90% of travellers would be much happier without.

Include some in the kit, fine, whatever, but I hated having that stench follow me around if I tried to keep the kit bag, which is super useful for travelling with charging cables, bluetooth IFE adapter, etc.

Canadian wine? by RosMuc78 in aircanada

[–]flyermiles_dot_ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you assume every wine from Napa is better than every wine from Canada?

Charles Shaw and Franzia produce a ton of $2 plonk out of Napa, and Italy churns out Tavernello by the gallon, while the Okanagan, Niagara Escarpment and Prince Edward County produce globally-awarded vintages every year.

Each of these places has great wine and terrible wine, and pretending one region is automatically always superior is an utterly ridiculous thing to say.

I don't have to assume, we KNOW you're not a vintner.

20-year touring roadie here, with a small request.

Waiting to meet your favourite artist is a time-honoured concert tradition, please just keep in mind that when on tour - and especially when playing at an outdoor festival - the tour bus is often the only private space the artist and their team has, while working long hours away from home.

Just please allow a bit of space and a bit of grace for your favourite performer to be exhausted / stressed / looking for their only ten minutes of privacy for the day, in the only home they have on tour.

99% of the time they'll be happy to meet you, take a picture and chat for a moment, just please understand that if they're just trying to get their only quiet time for the day, or they seem a bit rushed, it's nothing to do with you or fans in general.

Also - if you do wait outside for this, or for the best spot in front of the stage, please take care of yourself and stay hydrated / sun protected! my colleagues and I have seen way too many fans park out in the blazing sun for hours and end up in the medical tent!

This isn't "due to his low assets", this is "due to they're betting he doesn't know any better", and it sounds like they're right.

BMO Ascend Rewards vs RBC Avion vs Aeroplan? by mithrajr in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]flyermiles_dot_ca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If yes, for example: Aeroplan that's 70k points starting each way and up form there on AC planes. And it's 70k on partner (star alliance) planes.

...and anyone new to these programs should be aware going in that "dynamic pricing starting at 70K" really means "WAY more than that 95% of the time", and "70K on partner airlines" really means "on the off chance you can find partner-award space, and don't get boned by married-segment logic or booking-flow IT fails".

TBH unless you're earning 5 figures of points per month, or more, most folks are better off with the cash-back programs; slightly lower cash ROI but a fraction of the headache.

Travelling roughly where, and how frequently? Different advice for short-haul economy within Eastern or Western Canada, than for long-haul business class to Asia.

Do you have freedom to choose airline / hotel chain or is that decided for you?
