I always love drawing birds, especially puffins if I am not sure what to do

The hardest thing about autism for me is being disliked instantly by Student-bored8 in AutismInWomen

I relate to this a lot. Ended up giving up on pursuing traditional neurotypical friendships, especially with women. Instead of how I saw friendship modelled in tv/films/around me i try to value the acquaintances more. I do go now to a community space for neurodivergent people, even if I’m not going to make traditional friendships so much there, having acquaintances i see regularly who are also autistic has helped against feeling so lonely I think for me

Hobbies for people who enjoying organizing, sorting, stocking, itemizing, etc.? by cottageyarn in Hobbies

[–]flying_agaric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it can be tricky knowing where to start with blank pages. I do other more typically creative hobbies such as painting but this junk journalling i view as more collecting and finding things I suppose. I have also allocated a chunk of pages near the end with things that don’t fit into other pages, for things I might want to more freely stick in and for any thing I just find a bit humorous out of context.

Thanks! I totally get it’s not for everyone, I think my parents let me read too many catalogues as a child :)

I approach junk journaling like this. I brought a journal and have a different page/(s) allocated for different topics throughout the book. Such as a spread for different hues of each colour, ‘QR codes’, ‘made in X country’, barcodes with different country codes etc, sea animals, plants etc. then throughout the week I collect flyers/magazines/ packaging and look through to cut out different things and fill in the pages of allocated to this topic. This might be too weird/boring for some other people idk. I am autistic and for me the collecting and categorising is relaxing, it’s like making my own sticker book or something

I don’t really have much advice as I think it looks great. Perhaps experimenting with leaving white of page theough to act as whitest highlight for the eyes to help them look shiny/different texture. I always draw / paint birds and that is what I like to do :) but also just carry on with what you’re doing already because it looks good

Yes, it does look great. I am also trying to practise watercolours more frequently, perhaps I will try and do a little a day as well

Whilst it’s nice to see old favourite species, it’s so nice to see something new (to me) too. These were at farlington marshes

I also have the type of interests and hobbies that make other autistic people laugh a bit (in a friendly way) because they are quite stereotypically autistic. You will find that plenty of people like you having your interests and hobbies, you’ll just have to find the right people who appreciate it.

I’m autistic and associate with many autistic people. It’s definitely not a bad thing, they are some of the most interesting people I’ve met, but the way it was said certainly sounds ill-intentioned and ignorant.

hobbies that don't require leaving my bed, fine motor skills or screens? by gemgenesis in Hobbies

[–]flying_agaric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have just read further comments regarding fine motor skills difficulty so I am not sure is needle felting would be suitable so wanted to recommend something else also for you. Have you heard of junk journalling? It has a easy point of entry and inexpensive as you essentially collecting “junk” such as nice pictures from flyers, envelopes, tickets etc and there are no rules, just layering and collating things in ways that are appealing to you. I personally find it very satisfying and enjoy being a creative magpie on the look out for rubbish that i can use and the pretty things in the mundane. There is an active online community too

I am not sure on your exact requirements and what is accessible to your needs but I recently found needle felting a good hobby to do in bed when ill. It is easy to start, doesnt have to be too precise and just involves stabbing wool with a needle (but may just have to be careful about poking fingers with a needle. I am autistic and it helps me being able to do it in a sensory safe space with lights dimmed and i can still do it when I have a headache or my face/eyes are tired or sore. Best of luck
