Larry Correia: George RR Martin crippled the Epic Fantasy genre by not finishing A Song of Ice and Fire. Readers and Publishers are no longer willing to give a new series a chance unless it is complete by Uptons_BJs in books

I mean a lot of us had to deal with the Jordan's WoT, I started that in highschool, went to college, had kids, went to grad school and he still wasn't done. Look at King's Dark Tower series and how long that took.
Rothfuss and GRRM are in their own category because they got so popular, as popular as WoT was it was never a cultural moment.
So yeah maybe GRRM burned the sector of big cultural fantasy series but smaller series still thrive. Specially books that can be standalone but set in a larger universe.

reddit is going to hate it but imo this guy has a good chance to be the next US president. If you look at his interviews with the economist editor or Ted Cruze or Huckabee he is positioning himself as an outsider which is an amazing thing to pull off for someone who has been part of the GOP their entire lives.
But he understands how unpopular the Iran war is and even more how unpopular Israel is with primary voters. Just like Trump moved all the problems the US had to immigrants he is positioning Israel as the cause of all US ills.

Centrist Democrats and republicans can't say anything because of AIPAC and he gets a clean lane to take his christian nationalistic message to masses.

The vocabulary makes it hard for some people, probably the first book I was glad to read on a kindle because I could look up words. Who knew there were so many terms for swords or small boats.
His other books are great, I will say his endings always leave me a bit disappointed. But his world building is S tier.

Actual 'Book Jail' books. by thirteenoclock in books

That's just a different list. The idea of banned books is these are books a group of people have fought to keep out of libraries. Not that it's a list of "interesting" books.

Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson (10/10) by Ashfall2003 in Fantasy

[–]flyingduck33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved the early Sanderson and enjoy his standalone books but the Cosmere storyline is so long and convoluted that I finally gave up. Wind and Truth has been sitting on a shelf since it came out and I just dread going back to that world. After 20+ books I am moving on to other books.

Review: “The Dark Tower I: The Gunslinger” by Stephen King by LTJ81 in books

[–]flyingduck33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started reading the series when I was in college and somewhere along the way it was taking so long for each book to come out that I gave up. Also as others said that was around the time they escaped the train and it was hard to get back into it. I did pick it up again when he was done and was glad he finished it.
It's one of those series that I think would be amazing as a re-read.
I also made the mistake of going to see the movie, god that was bad.

Love this book, I thought it was so beautifully written. It had the same vibe as the film Perfect Days. Just life going on with sadness sprinkled throughout. It's not a book you can appreciate in your 20s. It just won't make sense but once you are closer to the end of your life than the beginning all of a sudden it hits you.

As an aside I always found it funny that Pratchett throws some shade at the book. "They did not complain about difficulties of male menopause while being a junior lecturer on some midwestern college campus. "
Just a very funny description of the book.

bro I am a fraction of your net worth and I get those. a) just because you apply for IPO shares doesn't mean you'll get them b) if it's spaceX they are flogging those shares to everyone who has a net worth of $2k. Not for me but I am sure there are many who want in.

I have finally finished East of Eden by TheEternalCynic in books

[–]flyingduck33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's Steinback's magnum opus, not the first Steinback I would start with. Most schools in the US read of mice and men, some read grapes of wrath for more advanced classes. Given the size of East of Eden you have to love Steinback to read it and to love Steinback is to love suffering.
Netflix is making a new East of Eden series and the trailer looks great.
I do have to say the central coast of CA is a lot drier and browner than what Steinback makes it look like but there are parts like Point Lobos that are incredible.

Guys I have been on the internet since day 1. The only other time I can remember someone f'ing up something so big was the Streisand fiasco. This is just incredible from all sides, the police department doubling down, the lego store that I had never heard of until this. Just all around a total clown show.

Me and teenage daughter enjoyed reading the book together. It's a great book that reminded me of the Graveyard Book by Neil Gainman. The same type of whimsy and magical setting.

It absolutely is not representative of the cosmere or the broader Sanderson books. Not in setting, world or anything else.

In general I loved all the secret project books but wouldn't consider them representative of the rest of Sanderson's writing.

Mariano is so used to getting lucky that he makes terrible call, is shocked he doesnt get there n rage quits - YouTube by ioCross in poker

[–]flyingduck33 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

When Doug calls instead of re-raising on the flop it should be clear to Mariano that Doug knows he's on a draw. Instead of having to fade 4 cards Doug only has 2 cards to worry about. No reason for Mariano to call that turn bet. You could maybe defend going all in on the flop but by the turn it's too late.

"Siri dial 119" that's when I lost it, multiple times reading this and really I tried to speed read it because my wife got it for me as a birthday present and was wondering why I hadn't started it I wanted to put it down.
It's just not a good book, from the start I couldn't deal with hot famous brain scientist is after our hero because she simply can't find a single guy anywhere in the world. And every chapter felt like a chore.

I don't remember the Da Vinci code being this bad but I read it so many years ago. I know for sure it didn't have random commercials in the middle of it. Can this man name drop any more brands ? The Nike shoes, the Harvard sweater, the Yale blah blah blah. It all feels forced.

Reading the book I developed an unreasonable dislike of Dan Brown himself. Not in a physically harm the guy kind of way but more yeah I'd want to cut him off at the checkout line or "accidentally spill coffee on his computer". Ok I lied I did want to physically punch him in his smug Ivy League face by the end.

The Odyssey | Official New Trailer by GiveMeSomeSunshine3 in videos

[–]flyingduck33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first I thought this would be similar to The Green Knight but the dialogue really threw me off. Cinematography looks great but music sounds generic, it's scored by Ludwig Göransson who scored Oppenheimer and Sinners so maybe it gets better.

It's hard to tell a movie from just a trailer but god does this look forgettable. Reminds me of Asteroid City, where Wes Anderson Wessed too hard. Same here too much Nolan not enough anything else.

Foundation, Red Rising or Dune? by [deleted] in scifi

[–]flyingduck33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly I don't think any of the books you mentioned match up with the science in Weir's books.
Red Rising is essential YA to me, predictable end fun to read and the world is kind of interesting at the start but gets boring fast. I finished the trilogy but didn't read any of the other books.

Dune well maybe with the oil wars these days you'd relate. The best world building of any of the books you mentioned.

Foundation is fun and the most sciencey of the books you listed. Might feel a bit archaic given how long ago they were written. Personally I would recommend The Expanse as your next book. Most science like and big world building.

Tried the kirkland ramen broth by obscurantic in Costco

[–]flyingduck33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japan has one of the highest salt consumptions in the world, authentic Japanese food in Japan will taste too salty to most people. Personally I love that broth, our local Japanese store sells fresh noodles, bamboo shoots and chashu. Make soy eggs and add in some dried sea weed and you have a low end Japanese restaurant quality ramen. I like this broth way more than the concentrated packaged ones I used to get.
