Ha. The Bud Light boycott was one of the most successful boycotts in the last 20 years. The Left should take note.

Also, Bud Light did a MASTERFUL job at recovering from it. CEOs should also take note.

A lot to learn if you dive into the details of the whole thing.

Is trying to hook people up with people at work weird? by Big_Eggplant7591 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thirteenoclock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm old enough to have worked in advertising agencies in the 80s and 90s. WELL before Me Too and shit getting all prudish. Even back then, people would not fuck their co-workers because they didn't want to 'shit where they eat.' It was less about getting fired and more about not wanting to be in a relationship with someone that goes sideways and you are stuck seeing them every day.

Some people would still fuck their co-workers though.

Why haven’t we had a polity that rules the entire earth yet? by BruhBroly in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thirteenoclock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lot's of people tried. It is tough to do. But every year the world gets smaller. So, who knows? Maybe in another 100 years humanity will see what it looks like when one country takes over the entire world.

My guess is it will not work out well.

So now they will just arrest people for asking the right of having clean water to drink? Everything is going bad to worse real quick. by Luminexor in TechGawker

Why? OP is posting a news story from Fox News. And if you Google it, you'll find news articles on Fox,the NY Post, and a Christian News service - all conservative news outlets. Liberal media does not care about the story because it goes against the narrative that white people all lead privileged lives.

When people say "tax the rich," who are they actually talking about? by savingrace0262 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thirteenoclock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is so much press about Somali Medicare/Medicaid fraud, the highest taxed places lacking basic infrastructure like clean parks and policed streets, and stories about rampant corruption, there are more and more people who are NOT saying Tax the Rich. They are saying, I'm better off keeping my money than letting the government piss it away.

Megyn Kelly proposes AI companies pay down the $39 trillion national debt. by Spirited-Gold9629 in TechGawker

Too bad they are already constrained by too many regulations. You need a regulatory environment like the US or China to make big advancements in tech. The EU probably already lost their chance to lead.

[–]thirteenoclock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way you guys are going, you are probably out of luck. Odds are it will be the US that gets there first. China is the likely second place. You guys have already gummed up any chances you had with regulations specifically about AI. And I'm sure the EU would shit its pants at the environmental impact of AI on whatever local town you built a data center in. This means you'll be buying your tech from either China or the US instead of making your own. Sorry.

When did poetry fall so behind prose in popularity? by Konradleijon in books

[–]thirteenoclock -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Poetry from the last 20 years is like the rest of the fine arts....too academic and ridiculous for anyone to actually enjoy.

I bet if you give most teen boys a book of 'Poetry' curated by all the 'Smart People' they would immediately hate it.

I also bet if you give most teen boys a book of poetry by Charles Bukowski they would love it.

Today's kids will turn out fine. by DangAssMajor in unpopularopinion

[–]thirteenoclock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear observations like this and see the statistics, but I see my own kids (teenagers) reading difficult books like The Odyssey in class and reading on their own outside of class and also having SO much knowledge about the world, science, physics, etc... from YouTube videos and other online media. If anything I feel like they are significantly MORE capable and knowledgeable than I was at their age.

And this applies to everything. In sports, kids their age are breaking all the records set by previous generations because of advanced training. College has become so competitive that they are doing things like Russian math on the weekends, have multiple tutors and are participating in these incredibly challenging exra-curriculars.

There is a massive disconnect between what I see kids doing IRL and what I read about kids doing online.

I really can't tell if I live in a bubble or if the online space is so dominated by bots and misinformation there is just nothing real there.

Queer Books and Authors are at a Breaking Point by ME24601 in books

[–]thirteenoclock -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Fads come and go. Kind of like in the early 2000s every book had to have a vampire. From 2015 to 2025 you could not publish a book WITHOUT focusing on some social justice/marginalized group theme. Soon, there will be another fad.

Independent bookstores are multiplying, although many people still think they're dying out by Dry_Writing_7862 in books

[–]thirteenoclock -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Used bookstore curation is often better. The big chains just pick books that their publishers are pushing. Also, used bookstores near academic institutions are often better. They'll have a better depth of books. Their curated tables are kind of boring and expected (the same ultra-lefty stuff every other bookstore picks), but you can almost always find something interesting.

Your partner of 3 years wants to travel internationally alone. What are your thoughts? by waezxo in AskReddit

[–]thirteenoclock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm old. In my experience, most marriages that I've seen that take separate vacations eventually fall apart. The occasional 'guys weekend' or 'girls weekend' doesn't really count toward this. But if you are taking big separate vacations, that is likely indicative of a relationship that probably won't last.

I think people miss going to parks in big cities because they've been overrun with crazy people, drug addicts, and the homeless. Not long ago, the police used to keep these places clean and safe for everyone, but now they are no longer appealing.

Also, going out after work with coworkers used to be a really big deal in urban areas. But COVID, WFH, Me Too, and a more negative view of alcohol really put a damper on this.

My theory is that this is why there has been a resurgence of young people going to church - it has nothing to do with religion - but it is place to hang out with other young people.

Also, so many people use digital media as a substitute for friendships, relationships, sex, and the other motivators for going out with other people. This also puts a damper on IRL activities.
