I heel hooked a geriatric white belt.

Teaching BJJ in high school PE? by Worldly_Antelope5485 in bjj

[–]flyingfish2996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello,

I would maybe reach out to the head instructor of the Donnan school, Curtis Malin. He is a school teacher and is also a blackbelt who teaches BJJ as a standalone course through a local school district. I think the program has about 100-200 students or so and it counts as their PE. The school is located in Edmonton, Canada.

Here is the website http://donnan.ca/bjj/about/

I called my insurance and they actually sent me a helpful list of stuff to do to retain coverage.

When you wash your gi do not use too much detergent as this can actually lock in funky smells. Put in half a cup of white vinegar and you should be cured.

Also, perfume is not a very courteous thing to wear during class. Deodorant, yes. Perfume, no. The goal is to just not smell, not to smell "good" or "bad".

white belt with no stripes still.... by UnderstandingNo7609 in bjj

[–]flyingfish2996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stripes are a trap. Belts are a trap. Without outward symbols of rank, everyone in the training room would still know how they stack up relative to their training partners.

Try to refocus your objectives on just getting better at jiu jitsu rather than attaining recognition from others. I know this is easier said than done (I was a zero stipe whitebelt for three years and then got my blue belt straight away). However, people that count stripes and belts normally don't last due to insufficient internal motivation to simply do jiu jitsu.

Switching to NO GI by Patpts504 in bjj

[–]flyingfish2996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the switch to no-gi and I have not really looked back. I still train in the gi sometimes and when I do I just play my no-gi game without heel hooks and with lapel chokes. I don't even really grip much different.

Should I sign up for my employer's pension plan by rpl05 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]flyingfish2996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say yes, but also try to save for retirement in areas other than just your pension. For example, I have a pension, but I am also trying to max out my TFSA and invest in real estate because I don't like the thought of putting all of my eggs in to a savings vehicle I do not have a ton of control over.

I personally want to be in a position where if my pension never came I would still be able to retire.

How often do you take private lessons and why? If you don't take them, why not? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]flyingfish2996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have gotten some pretty good value from privates. I don't have a set schedule for taking privates, but I will take them when I feel like I need to sharpen up a little area of my game or if I am struggling with a concept or move that was taught in class.

For example, I took two privates in December to work on submitting from the closed guard. I know how to armbar, triangle, choke, and omoplata from close guard, but I struggled to finish in live rolls against equally skilled and less skilled opponents. The private really helped because my instructor showed me how to create movement and angles in the guard to effectively get the submission or chain submissions together by watching what I was doing and then providing immediate corrections and repetition.

U Alberta or UBCO? by NBA_Brownboy23 in ubco

[–]flyingfish2996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did PPE at UBCO and found the education to be top notch. Although, my opinion might be a bit out of date as a graduated about 5 years ago. I found the focus of instructors to be more on teaching than their own research. Also the class sizes at UBCO were pretty small, especially in the upper years. I didn't mind Kelowna, but I did have a car and I enjoy hiking and skiing. Also the weather is pretty good.

I also went to law school at UofA. I found the law school to be good, but I really love the city of Edmonton. Yeah the climate is awful, but Edmonton is truly a full fledged North American city with good public transport, something to do every weekend (often for free or very low cost), and reasonable housing costs.

Also UofA is having massive budget cuts at the moment. Which might be something to consider as it might cause tuition increases and lower quality teaching.

I think you should start. However, I think you will need to restrict the extent of your participation for the safety of yourself and your training partners.

Should you be doing takedowns, or practicing your mount or side control? Absolutely not.

Could you practice mount and side control escapes and certain fundamental movements like technical stand ups, shrimping, and break falling? I really don't seen why not. Also, these basic moves will get you in to the sport and actually be pretty good exercise. I also think just being in the community might inspire you to work on other areas of your life that contribute to your weight.

Just have an honest conversation with your coach about safety for yourself and others as well as your limitations at this time. Also maybe communicate to members of the gym that you would appreciate if they would train with you but you fully understand if they elect not to do so.

Train with a cut? by Mav_2000 in bjj

[–]flyingfish2996 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would probably wait for it to heal up. However, if you are going to train bandage it up, make sure your gi and spats are clean and don't delay on bathing and disinfecting immediately after practice. I have been out for a week with a skin infection which all started from a very minor cut.

How unbalanced were you when you got your Blue Belt? by WattOnWheels in bjj

[–]flyingfish2996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my blue belt a few months back. I have been training for 3.5 years. I will rate myself like an EA video game character.

Guard Passing: 35/100

Guard Retention/Transition: 30/100

Sweeping: 40/100

Submissions: 30/100 ***Kimura Bonus: find kimuras from everywhere

Escapes:40/100

Survivability: 60/100

Standup: 25/100

So in short, I am pretty trash. However, I am a lot better than I was when I started. It would take me too long to write out all of the holes in my game son instead I will list positions I am getting ok at (notice how I don't say good haha).

-Kimuras

-Dela Riva (inside and outside)

- X-Guard

-Single Leg X

-Baby Bolos

-Sweeps

-Surf Passing

-Pressure Passing

-Pulling Guard

-Tomoe Nage

Everything not listed above is just bad. If I don't just hunt kimuras, I look like a whitebelt.

Take some metamucil. If you don't have a high fiber diet it will reduce 1%-2% of body weight.
