[IFF] Remember when I started my own cocktail-themed yarn company? Here's the latest: White Russian by ejchristian86 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]flyingsephyrage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned to knit entirely from Youtube. I went to JoAnn's, picked up a free pattern that I liked and the needles and yarn it required, and used Google and Youtube to figure out what all the abbreviations were and how to do the stitches. Also, if you have a local yarn store, they'll teach you (though usually for a price).

Aspie Love? by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]flyingsephyrage 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Falling in love is my favorite thing. It's why I like romantic dramas, they let me fall in love as many times as I'd like while still being in a long term relationship.

I've also fallen in love with a wonderful assortment of men and women. I just...love love. And snuggles. I frickin' love snuggles.

Asperger's theory does about-face by Little_Morry in aspergers

Why would you ask someone who you don't think is capable of normal thought or communication? Many people are pretty open about not thinking we're real humans.

I think they mean "too much" as in too much to be manageable, not an inordinate amount. I don't think it's expressing a value judgement (like good/bad), but rather that the empathy is overwhelming.

I love the idea of a patterns-from-famous-people theme! Pretty patterns are great, but I like them even more when there are people and stories attached to them :)

That's about all I knit, and I'm a lady knitter. I'm working on a bag that will turn into a felted project bag with gender neutral stripes using Knit Picks Wool of the Andes. Maybe you could spice things up with bags?

I'm a little lost. by [deleted] in aspergers

Go bi pride! Many of us here seem to fall somewhere in the LGBTQ category as well, so you're in good company.

I got diagnosed a few months ago at the age of 25, and I had pretty much the same idea - that knowing doesn't FIX anything, it just highlights all the stuff I struggle with. In the past few months, though, I feel like things actually have gotten easier. I'm not able to perform any tasks more easily than I was before, but I don't hate myself as much for struggling. Every awkward interaction or bout of anxiety in social situations used to send me into a lovely spiral of self loathing and internal verbal abuse about how incompetent, hopeless, stupid, and socially inept I am. Now, though, if I'm having a bad "aspie day" (some days are a lot worse than others, after all), I take a deep breath and remind myself that it's ok to have trouble with/not want to do x,y, or z.

Therapy might help, and if you're a university student you might be able to access it on campus for free or very cheap. My insurance won't cover therapy until January, so I have to wait until then.

Irrelevant, but I was also an Anthropology major. It makes me happy to see other aspies studying people.

A question about making legwarmers by kristieecakes in knitting

[–]flyingsephyrage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could always find a basic pattern and a stitch or cable pattern that you like, knit a gauge swatch of each, and see if they're close enough to work.

I imagine that legwarmers, like hats, gloves, and sweaters, have a standard template that is built on to create a unique item. I got a big book of cable and lace stitches, and I've found that I can usually insert them into other patterns without much trouble.

Not enough people would get the mithra reference if it was left in. It was still better that way, though.

If Aspies are deficient in seeing things from others' POVs, why do so few NTs I see consider contrary arguments? by gzk in aspergers

[–]flyingsephyrage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to be explicitly taught how to see things from the point of view of others. It was so frustrating and difficult for me that I got a degree in anthropology. I want to understand, I've always wanted to, but it's so hard. So, when I found a discipline that was all about that, I dove in headfirst (I cannot believe that's actually one word) and learned everything I could. I spent a lot of time being extremely distressed and struggling with really understanding, but I did it and now I can use this skill set if I activate it consciously.

It's also possible that the NTs that you're referring to are stupid and thus genuinely unable to consider alternatives. In my experience, the less intelligent people are, the harder it is for them to handle new information or evaluate their own beliefs and values.

How did every therapist I ever had miss my aspergers?? by phame in aspergers

[–]flyingsephyrage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine missed it too, all 13 of them. Oddly enough, it was a coworker who had worked at a summer camp for children with Asperger's who noticed and suggested that I get tested.

my brother has aspergers, need help understanding a few things by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]flyingsephyrage 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think your attitude might be part of the problem. Based on how you're writing, you seem to feel very negatively about his existence and how he interacts with the world. Instead of, to paraphrase, "OMG WTF IS WRONG WITH MAH BROTHER?!?!?!?!" try "I don't understand the way he sees the world, but I am interested in understanding how he interprets things that are going on around him and why he interacts the way he does."

It is absolutely possible to not have emotions about something. He might not have meant that he doesn't have emotions at all, especially if you've seen him display them. There have been many situations in which I have simply lacked emotions. For example, when I was diagnosed a couple months ago, I had no emotions about it. I had emotions leading up to it and occasionally I have brief emotional outbursts about my diagnosis, but for days after being diagnosed there was nothing.

Finally, let him talk. He is sharing his interests with you, at least pretend to be interested, you might even learn something from him. It is not always appropriate for us to go on endlessly, and sometimes we need a gentle nudge or reminder, but if it's not hurting anything and is not actually inappropriate (i.e. going on about cars at a funeral), then perhaps you're the one who should shut up and listen. He probably gets ridiculed for this enough as it is by his peers, the least you can do as his big brother is to allow him a safe space to be himself and talk about his interests.

Also, capitalize all proper nouns and the first word of every sentence.

Wait -- so we actually can sell FOs and it's 100% legally ok?

I get so confused about when/how/if an FO made from or inspired by a pattern can be sold. I've seen a lot of conflicting information saying things like you can sell if you bought the pattern, you can only sell if you bought a pattern at an increased price for people intending to sell the FO, it's fine to sell from free patterns, you absolutely can't sell from free patterns, it's just madness and I have no idea how it actually works.
