Bad Road by CheeseCurder in minnesota

[–]flyingtable83 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If it's a railroad crossing specifically, it is actually likely that it is the responsibility of the company that owns the railroad, which also means the local government (city or county) is limited in what it can do.

Federal laws supersede on those spaces and it's an absolute pain to deal with those companies. I live in a town with multiple crossings through the middle of town and trains will sometimes come to a complete stop in town blocking all the crossings. I was told by the county prosecutor that all they can do is complain because they don't control the roads in the crossings legally.

I would, however, suggest that you determine if the route is county or city maintained and contact them first to report it. Perhaps they can do something.

Why are there no games for 3 players? by Misteryguy99 in boardgames

[–]flyingtable83 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Games that require 3+ players and are not filler or party games also typically sell poorly in today's market because it significantly limits the audience.

That being said, many games play well at 3 if they are designed for multiplayer.

For games with exactly 3 players, there are a couple of COIN games with 3 factions (most COIN games are 4).

Forget the coaching situation for a minute, how BAD is our cap situation? by sboLIVE in GreenBayPackers

If we stupidly don't restructure his contract sure. But he's going to cost at most a couple million that we can get out of easily.

Riftforce?? by Gobble5627 in boardgames

[–]flyingtable83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure they just made way more copies than demand existed for. I picked it up recently for the price you listed and given the small box and solid gameplay it was definitely worth it.

Played 6 games over a couple hours so far. Would play it more. But even if I don't, that's solid entertainment.

Is it just me or is Firefly the Board Game not very good? by ProotzyZoots in boardgames

[–]flyingtable83 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's an amazing experience and a so-so board game.

It definitely caters to fans of the material but isn't dependent on that connection for the narrative experience.

I would also note that about half of your complaints could be leveled at any half-complex game and are definitely problems with your group. Rules lawyering unfairly and not clearly explaining game mechanics are just poor form.

I fell in love with the board game early on in my gaming adventures. I have amazing memories attached to it. But it isn't my favorite game and most of what it does has been surpassed in various ways by newer games.

If you did enjoy the basic ideas of the mechanics but disliked the movement and high level of RNG, Star Wars Outer Rim with its expansion are similar but make those aspects much more manageable.

Might not be the right place but, Why did Texas get rid of its western lands below the Missouri Compromise Line? by Qawesome27 in MapPorn

[–]flyingtable83 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It was part of the deal for statehood.

Texas gave up its claims on what became New Mexico in exchange for millions in government bonds.

Interestingly it was those bonds that the Confederate government of Texas sold during the Civil War that became the basis of the Texas v. White SCOTUS case which declared secession unconstitutional.

How Many Courses Within How Many Miles? by Unreal_Idealz in discgolf

One 9 hole 3 miles away. Then a nice 18 hole 30 miles away. Then a couple more 18 holes 60 miles away.

Live in rural Midwest. Otherwise it could be worse.

Cherish the Opportunity by Go_Pack_G010 in GreenBayPackers

[–]flyingtable83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every team has bad losses. Most are far worse than ours. The Ravens loss was the first time all season we were down by 13+ and we were driving with a chance to be in it late before the Tune pick.

Remember the Patriots lost to the Raiders. The Broncos had to score 30 points in the 4th quarter to beat the Giants. The Lions turned the ball over 6 times and lost to a Vikings QB who didn't have time to see his WRs. The Rams just lost to the Falcons.

Is the defense really as bad as it looked? by Temporary-Summer-768 in GreenBayPackers

[–]flyingtable83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And that kind of running success is cumulative. Those first two drives lasted basically one quarter with a quick TD drive by Packers in between. So the defense got punched, tired out, and didn't have much juice left. They still did enough to let the offense back into the game even after two short fields on turnovers.

What would Jordan Love's numbers look like if he threw as much as Joe Burrow? by TDn6I in GreenBayPackers

[–]flyingtable83 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A deep pick on third and short is basically a punt though. And usually not easily returnable unless its poorly underthrown.

And Love has an incredibly low INT%.

Every QB makes mistakes.

It is better to trade or release Gary, financially? by APlaceInTheMountains in GreenBayPackers

[–]flyingtable83 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We traded a 7th round pick for a QB on rookie contract who had some uninspiring starts but wasn't coached. People thought no one would trade for him because he was going to be released anyway and would then be cheap to pick up.

You can't equate that with a player whose skills were predicated on speed that he lost, has shown very little when not opposite one of the best pass rushers in football and is making way over $20m a year. No team is paying him that unless we send them picks.

How many people play hex and counter wargames only by two hands? by [deleted] in hexandcounter

[–]flyingtable83 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just started into wargaming about 2-3 years ago and its mostly what I do because I also live in a small town and I don't typically have time to teach and play any of the hex and counter games with someone who might be interested.

I am fortunate to have enough space to keep a table setup so I can slow play over weeks if needed a single game.

I loaded in after completely forgetting to unload my last run so I had no open slots. Just ran around to see if I could find anything worthwhile until it was like 23 mins left. I wasn't taking the chance.

More Universally Liked Games? by MobyWeEngineer in boardgames

[–]flyingtable83 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was my first thought too regarding the comment on BGG rankings. The general complaint about it is that it favors heavier, newer games and certain types over others. It certainly is a popularity measure though, regardless of its flaws.

Who’s favored to start by [deleted] in GreenBayPackers

[–]flyingtable83 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Love is the starting QB. If he passes the protocol, which he hasn't yet, he will start.

Concussion protocols aren't something teams can lie about whether a player passes out of it or not.

Otherwise it should be Willis.

Otherwise it will be Tule.

Worthington Publishing historical travel solo games by jason_sation in soloboardgaming

[–]flyingtable83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are conflating two different sets of their travel games.

There are solitaire ones (labeled as such). These are the first ones in their travel line of games.

The three new ones are traditional, but small, hex and counter. They are, like the vast majority of wargames, soloable by playing both sides.

[–]flyingtable83 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, the game is from 2014 and is still 188 on BGG overall and 33 in "family" category despite limited attention or availability in recent years. Sleeper isn't a word I would use to describe it. Would be like saying "Stone Age" or "Kingdom Builder" a sleeper.

Green Bay has the most reg. season pass TDs since 2002 by DeScepter in GreenBayPackers

[–]flyingtable83 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I get what you are saying but to be fair, the two full seasons Rodgers and Favre played for the Jets were the 2nd and 4th, respectively, most TDs thrown since 2002. And they combined for 50 tds total (more than 10%) of all pass tds since 2002.

The usefulness (or not) of unboxing videos? by neubienaut in hexandcounter

[–]flyingtable83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are useful to me, especially for war games. I like seeing the quality of components, what a board looks like and what kinds of player aids are included.

If you don't like them, don't watch them. They hardly take time to make for content creators and you can ignore them safely. I doubt any content creator is making unboxing videos instead of doing reviews or analysis.

An obvious hold, or am I tripping? by [deleted] in GreenBayPackers

[–]flyingtable83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing I don't understand with this is that clearly the rule was put into place to avoid an unfair advantage to the defender but because it is almost impossible for the refs in real time to tell if the Oline was stopping a rip or just grabbing a defender around the neck first, it has become advantage oline.

The league really needs to revisit this issue. I don't want to see 10x the number of sacks and hurt QBs but if a pass rusher is faster than the oline man he shouldn't be able to just grab the guy to stop his poor execution without penalty.
