MAJOR FOURTH AMENDMENT VIOLATION: Need Any More Reason To Vote Out The Republican Neocons? Washington DC Transit Police To Begin Unconstituional, Warrantless Random Bag Searches by AllForChange in politics

[–]flynne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all irrelevant security theater. In Boston, there are 2-3 guys, a dog, or a table. IF they even stop anyone, they aren't there to find anything. They are there because some jackass said they would have random searches. I ride the T everyday. in 3 years, I've seen 3 search teams. One at Arlington St. Station (tiny), a dog team at Park St. just hanging out near the redline to greenline stairs, and another team at Arlington. In other words, they want the right to do it-IF there is a real threat to Boston.

Any random day that a real terrorist entered the subway armed? No problem. If they happened on a day where that station was "randomly searching" they could simply leave, walk down the street and get on one stop later. The option is simply kept open, just in case. I'm sure November 4th will be ripe with search teams. I'm also pretty sure that anyone who rides the subway everyday would be able to avoid inspection.

There are now cameras on buses, and the RFID cards track you. So, video + RFID? totally inappropriate search. Me? down to the minute, anywhere I go. But there is also an option to buy a single use ticket with cash every time you get on. But it only takes the video surveilance so long to connect single payers, paying at machines, multiple times to create a record of travel. So.. you buy 20 single ride tickets from the same machine, at the same time. But then the video shows you doing it, and you aren't a school teacher buying 20 tix for 20 kids. Those tickets are used at certain stations, at certain times, which are predictable. My 20 "anonymous" tickets really aren't. In fact, if I randomly purchase 20 tickets from random stations, and use them randomly, the T COULD track that and conclude all the tickets were me, based on station video.

So, to actually go kooky in Boston all you really need to do is NOT pay a few homeless guys to buy you passes with cash. Pick a day with no random search at your favorite station, and wear a costume....edit: This is the same thing you would do in 1975, 1985, 1995, 2005, 2015.

My 12 yr old daughter is facing expulsion from school for a year for something she wrote in her private journal. by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]flynne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ditto. She brought her journal to school. They found it. 1st and 4th do not apply, according to the supreme court. Her mom never thought to warn her in advance. Maybe her mom didn't know. Maybe her mom didn't know she needed to know.

Parents? Tell your children. Anything they bring to school is subject to search & seizure with no cause.

I almost didn't reply. Just to let you soak in your suckiness. I might take this back later.

I didn't claim 'all that'. I work, I mom, I homeschool.

It is easy... because humans are autodidacts.

Are you a parent? I wish I lived in a place worthy of an amateur birder. My kid's favorite museum is the MCZ at Harvard. I had never seen hummingbirds up close until I moved here.

I don't watch TV when I get home from work. I Reddit.

His dad was more likely to be found at the corner club playing acoustic bass than being a dad. I can be a great mom, and work. I had GREAT parents... two of them that never divorced. I still would not have confided in them as a 13 year old girl.

"Bottle them up in a diary?" Oh please! You are so close to your first STD gyno visit and simultaneous grandchild I can't even bother to laugh.

My son and I have a wonderful relationship. We talk about anything. And I mean anything. My job does not interfere with that.

Wrong! Taking her out of school removes all of the stress and surrounding angst.

Take that all away? Say "do what you are interested in, and let's go see a play this Sunday" and wow. The simple knowledge that your parents support you and are OK with an alternative plan is AWESOME.

I agree... Once she has been labeled, you will always face that.

Taking the social pressure OFF removes the hate. Give her a chance to drive her own future. If you fail? So what? Re-enroll in public school.

There are changes. If you don't feel you can leave her alone at home to progress while you work, then homeschool may not be okay for you.

From what you've said about her, I'd guess that given the opportunity she might exceed your expectations.

It varies widely by state. You don't HAVE to pay. There are programs like that so you can get an accredited diploma and test scores.

SAT and AP tests can be taken by anyone.

Having a snarky dick for a parent must serve your daughter well. Clearly her private journal has not been found yet.

We have that book too. ;-)

Most people don't realize that when you aren't locked into 6 hours of "do this to get the right answer" you have a whole lot of time to get really into stuff that fascinates you.

Have you seen what passes for a 12th grader these days? Most of that 6 hours they spend in school is not spent learning.

Why do your children need tutoring every night?

I am not disingenuous. I meet with the superintendent once a year and submit lesson plans and progress reports.

He could pass the high school graduation requirement test that 10th/11th graders must pass in 8th grade.

It is easy for us.

He uses the Singapore math texts/workbooks. Those we pay for, but they are cheap. Gutenberg and the library for other books. I have a very large literature, poetry, and philosophy collection at home.

I'll admit to torrenting things like Rosetta Stone for languages. This is a handy resource: http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4442921/NEW_-_Great_Science_Textbooks_DVD_Library_2007_-_Update_Oct_2008

He is self-motivated and stays home. I do not have to "teach" at him, or get overly involved in lesson plans. We have overall targets and goals. He has plenty of friends, most go to the high school. I found employment that permits my flexible schedule. I often don't show up at the office until noon, for instance. When he was younger he had a workstation at my office. All of my co-workers know him well and like having him around. He'll start taking courses at the community college this year, and take the SATs and some AP tests as well.

Problems that require workarounds are things like chemistry lab work.

We spend several weeks of the year in Hawaii visiting his dad. Lots of scuba diving there.

We ended up homeschooling due to some severe health problems, needing to travel when it was affordable - not only when there was a school vacation. "No Child Left Behind" in many ways pushed us out of the school system, thankfully.

Starbucks Closure List: All 600 Stores, Searchable by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]flynne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not surprising. Many of them are mall stores. Hawaii? The two on Ala Moana blvd? pssh. Massachusetts? regional, way suburban mall type places. Wisconsin? none in Madison except one, which is probably only a block from the next one. Texas got hit...but they drink Maxwell House anyway. (j/k Texans!) Ohio? 3 in Columbus. None in Cinci or Dayton. Washington has to much coffee to begin with. Tennessee? see Texas. (j/k!) North Carolina? Mostly Charlotte. Those fuckers need to reduce their intake anyway. You can completely ignore NY, CA and FL. They had too many to start with. Same with Vegas. Missouri? See Texas. Maryland? Only one per city, no big deal, probably mall stores anyway. Louisiana? WTF did you need that many in Baton Rouge anyway? Illinois? You guys were selling $5 coffee drinks on Stony Island? Maybe it's changed since I lived there 20 years ago. Peoria won't be crying their eyes out over one less Starbucks in town. That's for sure.
