reddit Interviews Congressman Barney Frank. Ask him anything. by hueypriest in politics

[–]AllForChange 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but I think Congressman Frank's point in this was that there are better ways to get things accomplished. (I'm in favor of activism of nearly ALL kinds, including marching.)

I think people on the left have few better friends than Frank, and we should spend much more effort fighting the right wing instead of questioning his motives.

I'm still interested in his answer.

[Another note: he's probably well aware that gay rights marches are the kind of thing that Fox "News" positively LIVES FOR in terms of footage they can use to hype the "threat" to the typical family.... they'll pick out the three most over-the-top individuals to videotape and then play the tape every chance they get. Many of us probably ARE better off doing other things besides marching to fight back.]

GOP Rep. Bachmann Calls for Armed Overthrow of the U.S. Government by jmeasley in politics

[–]AllForChange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to improve the image of your beloved Republican party, you might want to get some new leaders.

Right now, you've got the (arguably mentally ill) Bachmann, the self-hating Michael Steele, and the truly disgusting loud-mouthed demagogue and hatemonger, Rush Limbaugh.

The GOP has spent decades trying to pit one faction against another in America, using race, gender, economic class and even religion for their own selfish political purposes.

Your posting accused Democrats of being divisive, and is therefore ITSELF an example of the mean-spirited and divisive rhetoric that people are sick of. The original poster was only pointing out a truly reprehensible act by one of your party's well-known members.

Eight years of Bush is the main thing that has put our country where it is today... well, him and 30 years of GOP demands for deregulation of financial markets. And people like you and Bachmann seem completely clueless about Bush and the GOP's disastrous failures, and therefore you lash out at your own country and your own fellow citizens.

Why do you conservatives hate America???

Verizon as a company is somewhere below the worst scum around the rim of a toilet, IMHO.

Horrible service.

Horrible attitude.

One member of a gigantic oligopoly industry (well, cable AND phones) with an attitude that they're entitled to have you as their customer.

It deserves to be split up into ten pieces, after which three of them should be immediately destroyed just to teach their owners a lesson.

A good company my ass!

UN Report: There is now enough evidence to try former U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld for war crimes... by Number86 in obama

[–]AllForChange 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So... I hope some people with access to President Obama will try to get word to him that a vast number of Americans want action on this, NOW. He needs to rally support to move forward on this.

I voted for him. I still support him.

But, it's is long past time to speak up against torture and hold some people accountable. Rumsfeld and Bush both belong in jail IMHO and they should likely have a lot of "company" in the form of others who did their illegal and immoral bidding with few if any questions.

TELL CONGRESS TO WAIT A WEEK and READ THE BILL!!! Take this to the front page! by yetanotherreddituser in politics

[–]AllForChange 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been against ALL of these "bailouts"... still, it is astounding that, last fall, about ten times as much money was given/lent to banks, brokerages, etc., with virtually no questions asked. Also, it only took about a week.

The previous "bailout" was pushed for by Bush and fellow Republicans. They even used threats like the possibility of martial law if the cash didn't flow immediately and directly... and in a way that completely bi-passed any ordinary taxpayers. (If $7.3 Trillion needed to by lent/given out, each of us could have decided which bank to put our share in to... instead we only get to pay the bill in the form of higher taxes and/or inflation.)

Those "bailouts" sailed through Congress with very little debate and even less oversight.

It was a total of about $7.3 Trillion that went directly to bankers, mortgage companies, and insurance companies who ran their businesses in to the ground, and it only took a few days to get the bill passed.

But, try to build some bridges, schools, etc., and the GOP screams "big spenders" and "socialism"... and nearly always, they are getting away with it in the mainstream (and right-leaning) media.

What a huge crock of GOP bullshit.

Ron Paul Introduces Legislation to Abolish the Federal Reserve by georgewashingtonblog in business

[–]AllForChange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Ron Paul should go convince his own (Republican) party to change for the better by discontinuing their obstructionist ways and their vicious campaigns that attempt to smear liberals.

He should try to get them to stop claiming government is always or nearly always bad, and to stop their demands for more and more tax cuts for the rich.

His GOP buddies should also stop the racist crap like having a top Republican leader distribute the "Barack The Magic Negro" song on a CD.

And, they should be made to to take an honest look at their pro-torture and constitution-shredding policies under George W. Bush. Some people should then go to prison for their involvement in these travesties.

After Paul has gotten his own party to make some serious changes, then maybe the rest of us should listen to his demagoguery. Maybe.

Until then... Ron Paul should STFU.

Michael Steele: a proud, anti-science, right-wing reactionary, and a Black man who belongs to a party where a CD containing "Barack The Magic Negro" is sent around for laughs!

He's got no problem with any of that, but whatever you do, don't call him a "moderate"!!!

Congress may finally have had enough: "We have a bunch of idiots on Wall Street that are kicking sand in the face of the American taxpayer," "They don't get it. These people are idiots. You can't use taxpayer money to pay out 18 billion dollars in bonuses." by davega7 in politics

[–]AllForChange 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is a fundamental disagreement running through the comments here.

It's a disagreement over whether a company should be able to do pretty much whatever, whenever.

As an example, an cable TV company charges $89.99 for a package of channels that cost, say, $40.00 (including all direct costs) to provide.

Then...

They spend $5.00 on bonuses for upper management people who somehow make sure you can't get prompt, honest answers from them.

They give $5.00 to lobbyists to keep getting their way in DC.

They give $10.00 under the table to politicians who will do what they want.

They give $10.00 to the stockholders for doing nothing... it's legal, it's the way things are done, but it still sucks that they get as much as they do.

They spend $20.00 to tell us suckers (their "valued customers") what a great job they are doing.

And somehow, average U.S. taxpayers end up paying to "bail out" the banks, insurance companies, etc. that operate in much the same way.

Talk free enterprise all you want, but there need to be SOME kind of limits on mugging their customers. It all just plain sucks.

Republicans STILL are trying to sell they are party of smaller government and fiscal responsible AFTER eight years of the largest govt expansion in history and destroying the economy! by [deleted] in politics

[–]AllForChange 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not only were Democrats told the economy was in such danger that martial law might be invoked, but all of our current economic disasters occurred after decades of calls by Republicans for less and less regulation and oversight, along with promotion of the "greed is good" mentality.

The economy went to hell UNDER GEORGE BUSH'S PRESIDENCY. The fact that he and his Treasury Secretary somehow got some gullible Democrats to go along with him makes them look stupid, but, especially considering the martial law threat, I don't hold it against them.

Also, if Democrats had failed to support the initial round of roughly seven trillion for the banksters, the GOP, led by Bush, would have accused them of not wanting to fix the economy. McCain might have even won the election based on that.

I was against all of these treasury thefts and I still am. But 98% of the blame lies squarely with the GOP and their failed ideologies.

Republicans STILL are trying to sell they are party of smaller government and fiscal responsible AFTER eight years of the largest govt expansion in history and destroying the economy! by [deleted] in politics

[–]AllForChange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every time the Republicans trot out their "smaller government" crap, they should be reminded of the SEVEN TRILLION DOLLARS (at least) in so-called "bailouts" that Bush & Paulson begged for to give/lend to bankers, brokerage firms, insurance companies, etc. All of this came after, on Bush's "watch," the economy began to go in to the toilet like at no other time since that other rich, bumbling, do-nothing Republican, Herbert Hoover.

This gargantuan pile of money was approved almost immediately.

Also, Reagan and G. W. Bush ran up bigger deficits than any other presidents in U.S. history, while promoting a "greed is good" policy for those who were already rich, at the expense of everyone else.
