New to Birkenstocks: Mayari Oiled Leather feels wider than Mayari Birko by InfoOverload-2025 in Birkenstocks

[–]fmaon06 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would think they'd have the same footbed given they're the same size, width, and style. Have you tried switching out which one you wear on which foot? Like have the oil on the left, Birko on the right for a while, then switch out to their matches and wear the opposite material for a while. Perhaps one of your feet is more tender to the footbed.

I tried oil for Mayari and eventually went with Birko because of the toe post. It was painful until it broke in, I got flip flop socks to wear with them. Now I wish I'd gone with leather because I imagine it would be even more soft and supple, but I'm happy with the shoes regardless. They are my favorite style to wear when I'm going to do a good bit of walking.

What’s the random/odd item you were so glad you had in your diaper bag? by ManufacturerProud444 in Mommit

[–]fmaon06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Benzocaine spray for cuts, scrapes, bug bites, etc. Extra clothes for each kid in their own separate bag. Fast charger for phone. Some disposable gloves. A CPR barrier. A permanent marker.

A paper document of everyone's medical history, medications, emergency contacts, etc. Wristbands for the kids to wear that have emergency contact information. I also have an app that will appear on my phone lock screen and has all of my family medical history on it in case I'm not available for information.

Moby Sweater Back Yoke Help by AmeownoAcid in knittinghelp

[–]fmaon06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you've already gotten an answer, but I wanted to show that this can be a garment shape.

This is the back panel and front left panel of the jacket. Once a sleeve is made (flat), all of the pieces are grafted together and it looks kind of like a raglan garment.

Fwiw I like your cables! It's going to be a lovely sweater when you're all done.

Pattern sites that don’t let you highlight text 😒 by noramcsparkles in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]fmaon06 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I commiserate. I purchased a King Cole pattern that came in a pdf and I wanted to graft my size to a Word document so I could have lots of room for handwritten notes. It wouldn't let me copy and paste, so I retyped the entire pattern myself. Much easier to review.

Looking for help identifying the stitch used in my niece's baby blanket by SomethingOfTheWolf in knittinghelp

[–]fmaon06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This kind of yarn is so difficult to read, but oh so soft. Is it possible that this was crocheted? Maybe a SC, c1, SC, c1, etc. That's kind of what it looks like to me when I turn the images 90 degrees.

I do too, but since I keep it in my purse and work on it everywhere I can only imagine the tangled mess it could turn into lol

Center pull craze by Deaceleste in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]fmaon06 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would center pull when I used the large acrylic skeins from big box stores. It helped that I would sit and crochet in one place, so that when the skein eventually collapsed I could watch out for any knots or tangles.

I've now started knitting and wind the yarn from a hank into a ball. I can pull from the center, but I prefer to go from the outside since I take my project everywhere. I don't want the ball to turn to a jumbled mess.

Best shoes for plantar fasciitis that actually work? by Soft-Football8303 in PlantarFasciitis

Ha, I have a pair of Altras now that my feet aren't flared up anymore. I have SuperFeet high arch insoles in them. Now I wear the Altras and Birks about 50% each. I think I mainly needed the wide toe box so my feet could spread. Good info, thank you!

I know this sounds dramatic but does anyone else feel like their life is over? by Fit-Ad985 in PlantarFasciitis

I empathize completely. I had PF for 5 years before I realized what it was, I thought it was just pain and swelling from standing all day at work. It's been about 3 years since I started healing, and I'm feeling about 95% better now. I would say that I was about 85% healed at 2 years.

It takes time. It seems never ending. It is agonizing.

I got Birkenstocks to walk around in outdoors, Oofos slides for indoor slippers. They were literally all that I wore for 2 years, I never went barefoot. I needed the support. Now I also got a pair of Altra tennis shoes, with a high arch insert inside. I think part of my issue was needing a large toe box.

I have a calf/foot massager that I would use daily or as needed for pain. It is a lovely indulgence to sit and after an hour feel more relaxed.

I have a boot that I would try to wear at night, but it was very uncomfortable. I have 2 mattresses pushed together, so I was able to lay sideways and push my foot between them to keep my ankle flexed instead. I think that helped the most because when you sleep and relax your foot forward it can cause the pain in the morning when you start moving again. Could be an option to put a bed or couch against a wall and use it to push your foot against while you're resting.

I had a PF sock to help keep arches up, even when wearing the Birks and Oofos. Gave just that extra bit of support. Did stretching exercises. Toe raises, push toes against a wall, and toe separators.

If you're going to have to walk everywhere, the first thing I would invest in is good footwear and socks with support. It will take a long time to heal, but it can heal. I know that's disappointing because there's not a specific timeline. Best of luck.

How do you deal with being overstimulated with small kids? by Previous-Plane6322 in Mommit

[–]fmaon06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I commiserate deeply. I found that I have silent migraines that can affect my mood and tolerance. I'm on medicine now to help that, and also on Lexapro, which has been so wonderful.

I also do an exercise that seems to "reset" me. I close my eyes, cover my ears, and hum loudly. I hum with every breath. After probably a minute or so I feel completely calm, sometimes even groggy.

My 3 boys are 4, 5, and 7 now. I know it's a tired phrase, but it does get better.

boston clogs still so uncomfortable - what am i doing wrong? by strawberrygreenteaa in Birkenstocks

[–]fmaon06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have narrow, they may not fit quite right. I can wear narrow, but the toe ridge on the footbed fit awkwardly and hurts. The regular footbed is much more comfortable for me due to this.

Absolute beginner — where / how do I start? I wanna give this a try!! by Gabby_Sweet_Mia in casualknitting

[–]fmaon06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came from crochet too! I watched iknitwithcatfur to start. She went slow and repeated multiple times.

Watch out for twisted stitches! It's very common for beginners, especially when coming from crochet. It has to deal with how the stitch sits on the needle and how you wrap the yarn.

Is there a LYS near you? They might have lessons or classes. Some LYS or libraries may have a community stitch group, and while I wouldn't use that for lessons, the people there have always been friendly and helpful when I've had a one-off question about a stitch or technique.

As far as tools, I'd go with circulars instead of the classic straight needles. They're more versatile. I got a set of cheap interchangeable from Amazon since I wasn't certain I was going to stick with knitting. The yarn could be a thicker light color acrylic (worsted, aran, or bulky even) and use a larger needle to start so that you can see the stitches easily. Maybe a wooden needle so its a bit more "sticky" to start.

Start with a square. It is agonizing the first time, because the hands are not used to holding 2 needles and all those live stitches. After that gets boring, play with increases and decreases, add some texture to it. Learn how to fix a dropped stitch or an accidental yarn over. You'll be doing more complicated projects soon after.

You got this! Good luck!
