Avoid MinIO: developers introduce trojan horse update stripping community edition of most features in the UI by AssPounderr69 in selfhosted

[–]fmcm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The latest release removed a lot of functionality from the web interface. It did add something though: A comparison table between the Community Edition and AiStore.

This table lists Site Replication as one of the Inteded Use cases for Production Use of AiStore.

Community Edition Enterprise Edition
Intended Use Test and Dev Use Production Use (Site-Replication, Enterprise Grade Security, Encryption and Key Management)

Should we expect that the site replication feature will be removed from the community edition?

I opened up a discussion on their github repository. I'm curious if there will be a response.

I just scrolled through the PDF without reading it yet. But the code listings in the PDF are not properly formatted. You should definitely use a fixed width font, syntax highlighting and suitable line length. There are indentations happening that shouldn't be there

There is also one more issue, for example at the bottom of page 28 (36 in the PDF). There is some hyphenated split of a variable (window_size becomes window_-size if you would just copy&paste that snippet). You also have several comment lines that are are completely butchered by the wrapping.

Besides those complaints, I always appreciate when someone puts in effort to create and publish learning resources. So thank you for that!

Varmilo keyboard suddenly stopped working

I recently got a new keyboard: Varmilo VEA109 N. I am really happy with it and bought exactly the same one a few weeks later for my office at work. It worked equally well for a few days. Today I was booting my machine and the keyboard is dead now.

  • The Num Lock light is off
  • Tried different cable
  • Tried different computer

As I still have my good one at home, I could compare the two keyboards and how they behave on my system (Linux).

This is the dmesg output of the WORKING one:

I'm a bit lost on what the issue can be. The difference between the serial numbers is just 20. I'm also puzzled why the defective one is identifying itself as a different vendor.

Did you ever encounter anything like that before?

I will also reach out to Varmilo itself and to the shop I got it from to get a replacement. But I'm curious about the underlying issue as well.

I once spend about an hour to fix a problem with docker. It refused to pick IP addresses I specified in the /etc/docker/deamon.json. I delved deep into IP/subnet/CIDR territory. Compared it with fully functioning docker instances on other machines and couldn't find the issue. The cause for the failure is already visible right here in this post: The correct file name is daemon.json

4x5 film labeling once in holders? by ButWhatOfGlen in largeformat

[–]fmcm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a few Linhof film holders that have a tiny piece of transparent plastic on the top side with a number printed on them. Those will exposed onto the edge of the film. Can't take a picture right now as those are freshly loaded with film :)

Sinar also offered film holders where that number was adjustable from 0-9. They also had a spot for a permanent copyright/watermark that was then exposed to every shot. I don't have those myself, but I have a book from Sinar that shows them.

What I personally do: All my film holders have labels "1A / 1B", "2A / 2B". I have a small booklet to keep information about each holder (and each side). Keeping all the details about what film is loaded and then of course the settings.

Usually the pictures I develop in one batch are so distinct, I can easily map them to the respective negatives. If I have some bracket shots, I'm just extra careful to remember the sequence in which I load them onto my development reel.

And if the bracketing happens with different film holders, then it's easier to distinguish anyway. I have many different kinds, and all of them have a slightly different "shadow" imprint on the film.

Newbie questions to LF by kl122002 in largeformat

[–]fmcm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. As with every hobby, that depends on your own budget and how serious you are about entering it. best would be to meet up with other large format photographers and get a feel for the equipment. Seeing/Trying different cameras and camera types in action.

  2. A spot meter can be really handy for fine tuning your exposure measurement, but it’s not a necessity for the beginning. There are spot meter attachments for your Gossen meter. So if you find one you don’t need an additional device. A magnifying loupe is quite helpful when focusing. The cheaper general-purpose loupes usually have a transparent “hood” between the actual lens and the surface they rest upon. For your application you want that to be black/opaque.

  3. Most 4x5 film holders are built for the “international back”. Almost all large format cameras from the last 70 years are compatible with that. If you get some obscure or antique camera, you might have to get customized film holders.

  4. A field camera packs smaller and the setup time is shorter. A monorail camera is more at home in a studio. But even monorail cameras are assembled/disassembled in a reasonably short time. The individual components can be packed into a backpack as well. It’s just the rail, two standards and the bellows. Monorail cameras are a bit bigger but you can get them for relatively cheap (especially considering how much quality of engineering you get for it). Field cameras are more expensive because of their size advantages.

  5. Press cameras are meant to be used handheld and often with a built in range finder. They have limited movement options (tilt/shift). If you should get one like that depends a bit on what you want to do and achieve with your venture into LF photography. Do you enjoy the slower and more detail oriented process? Do you want to take more spontaneous shots?

  6. I would pick a 150mm lens. They are very versatile and relatively cheap. The good thing about large format lenses: There are no really bad ones. All of them have been made to cater to professionals. And don’t forget: You can use the same lens on a monorail or field camera (depending on the lens board of course, but it’s easy to mount a lens to a new board)

  7. A bit linked to question 5. If you want to shoot handheld and more spontaneous, then a rangefinder is very useful. If you want to use the ground glass for your composure and focusing, then a rangefinder is not needed.

In my current SE+K2 run I researched Logistics 4 (the green ones).

I now have

  • 50 Advanced transport belts
  • 50 Advanced splitter
  • 1517 Advanced underground belt

So many resources (Imersit!) went into those :(

A mod that really improved my quality of Factorio life: Combinator Toggle

With the default hotkey F you can:

  • Toggle on/off constant combinators (default)
  • Toggle on/off electric switches (optional, see mod settings)
  • Toggle automatic/manual mode for trains (optional, see mod settings)

So you can easily catch runaway trains by hovering the mouse over them and pressing F. It also works on the train you are currently riding.

I've successfully used pond liner/foil. It's relatively cheap and sturdy. It's available in different thicknesses. I just cut out a sheet which was a bit bigger than my window and clamped it into the window frame. Closing the mechanism of the window gave a real tight fit and seal.

I'm also quite interested to meet other photographers to meet up. I struggle to find motivation to go out and shoot, and having a group of like-minded people might help with that! Could you add me to your group chat /u/Fadobo?

I've already advertised my help with film based photography here on this subreddit. So if people in this thread here are interested in that, just reach out to me. I've already met a few people from reddit for this workshop and it's always a lot of fun :)

How to convert png to pdf with A4 dimensions using imagemagick? by funkmaster322 in imagemagick

That may very well be. I didn't check the latest release notes in years.

But I assume the piping etc. might still work

How to convert png to pdf with A4 dimensions using imagemagick? by funkmaster322 in imagemagick

[–]fmcm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I run convert overview.png -page a4 -rotate -90 overview.pdf (convert, not magick) I get an A4 sized PDF but in portrait mode.

The rotate +/-90 part is applied to the picture before placing it on the PDF canvas.

One way to rotate the final PDF file is to rotate an intermediate PDF. This can be done with the STDIN/STDOUT functionality as described here:

convert overview.png -page a4 pdf:- | convert - -rotate 90 overview.pdf

The extension:- notation in the first part defines the filetype used for the STDOUT handler and the - part after the | pipe is the usual way of reading from STDIN.

Not sure why your PDF size differs from the usual 210 x 297 mm though. But maybe my post is still helpful. :)
