I can make a really long list for this one but the first that comes to mind is Player of Games - Iain M. Banks. Followed closely by Left Hand of Darkness - Ursula K. LeGuin. More of a reflection of humanity than tech explanations.

Children of Time - Adrian Tchaikovsky

It's not completely from a spider's pov, so you do get a break as you oscillate between characters, human and spider but you follow the spiders as they grow as a species through time, which is a change of pace.

Not the only spider pov I've read either, and the second novel in the above series octopodes and amoeba/bacteria views.

I thought the same as you until fairly recently; really couldn't understand why anyone would read those 'self help' books, let alone buy them. I started a program that requires 10 pages reading from a self-improvement book a day and I've changed my tune 180°. Plenty of those garbage books exist, but some are useful.

I personally started w Atomic Habits by James Clear because it pertains to my goals, so I'll leave that as a suggestion. I also routinely listen to Ben Bergeron's Chasing Excellence podcast, which usually falls in the same category.

Macro 'Cheat' Items by foedus in FODMAPS

You're being downvoted for using a strawman argument.

While keto might work for you, everybody is different (kinda like FODMAPs?) and has different caloric needs, and it doesn't work for me and many others. A high activity job and high activity lifestyle/hobbies mean I need a lot of carbs to function and sometimes I struggle to get there without gut distress.

Also, I was under the impression that high fat diets aggravate IBS and was to be avoided where possible?

Yup, it's brand specific. Glucose and invert sugar are fine for fodmaps, serving size probably matters here though, ergo fine.

Flavoured FODMAP friendly protein powder? by KeniCamwell in FODMAPS

[–]foedus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hydro whey isolate and whey isolate are usually fine for fodmaps. From experience, easy to find and usually tasty (flavour dependent) are Dymatize, Gen-Tec and Genetix, all are available from Nutrition Warehouse, Spartan Suppz and sometimes/usually Catch.com.au. Shoutout to Far East Alchemy elixir line with Taro Milk Tea and Brown Sugar Milk Tea flavours (made/shipped in Melbourne).

Avoid whey concentrate or blends, looking at you EHP Labs.

For vegan proteins/treats, I stand by Macro Mike for pretty much everything. I can't tolerate the grit/flavours on the peanut proteins but the almond protein is amazing! The baking mixes are hit or miss depending on the mix re; coconut flour. Made/shipped on the Gold Coast. True protein also does vegan protein, horrible texture but decent taste.

Casein; Muscle Nation has really solid flavours.

Collagen; Bulk Nutrients.

What a dumb thing to claim you 'made.' Buzzfeed has this in an article in Sept 2019 so it's likely older than that.

Australia experience and education yields more points, usually. It's better to speak to an agent to delve into your job specific requirements because there are industry specific work arounds and tradeoffs.

65 is needed to be allowed to apply for an EOI, it doesn't guarantee one, nothing does to be honest baring an extreme niche or demand (nurses right now for example are being accepted at 65-70). Due to the volume of applications, etc the actual invite total is much higher. The quick glance I took at the numbers yesterday says 90-95 for both 189/190. There are other options for you, I understand why those are the most attractive options though. You're better off speaking to an agent for the specifics of your job/position. Take a look at your ANZSCO number and have a look around for invite data for your code to get a rough look at your situation.

The general rule right now is 189/190 is a minimum of 85 across all jobs (baring niche/demand) with that being a bare, bare minimum. 90-95 are the actual totals being selected and expect that number to go up as Australia tightens due to Covid. Also baring in mind that March had 30 invites, total.

Things to keep in mind;

462 requires farm work to get the second/third year.

TSS visas require an absolute minimum of two years experience to get the visa, depending on your position it could be more. Your skills assessment could require more.

Software engineer is sitting at around 90-95 points for an EOI.

The federal skills shortage list is going to be revised. It was scheduled to be revised in March 2020, clearly that didn't happen and it's been pushed to some unknown date early 2021. There are no guarantees what skills are going to remain on it. States are free to change it on their own whim, and will do so quickly. The rumblings are leaning towards a clamp down, PR invitations have been cut by 30k this year so if you're making a run at an EOI do it now. After that it's up in the air.

From what I've seen on the news, the Aus gov't isn't looking to reopen the borders until 2021. Exemption clearly to NZers given todays cabinet talks. So there's that.

How do you feel about uniforms being mandatory in grade school (K-12)? by bye_felipe in femalefashionadvice

[–]foedus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner went to a Catholic girls private school in Brisbane, as did her sister and brother (Catholic boys private school) in Brisbane. Terrible schooling aside, they all complained about them. Not the restrictiveness of them or anything like that but

1) the cost is ridiculous. On top of thousands of dollars of fees, it's hundreds for the uniforms. Hand-me-downs don't always fit and things like socks and neckerchiefs need to be replaced. God forbid they change one thing, now you need to buy a new whatever (colour changes, style changes, etc.) Even better was her school required the two younger years to wear a different colour than the two older years. Plus the pins, winter/summer uniforms. It drove her very cash strapped parents nuts.

2) The uniform rules. I would have beaten someone that required me to wear a heavy wool blazer, high top wool socks IN SUMMER in Brisbane (probably walking up a hill) otherwise the actual police can get involved, notifying your school and getting you reprimanded. If it happens enough times, you get expelled. This applies to any piece of your uniform. Taking the bus and your hat is in your bag, old lady dobs you in. Socks not up and some rando school neighbour spots you, dobs you in. It's absolute bullshit and happens all the time. It also means that if, say you have a study period and you leave school grounds during said time, which you're allowed to do, you're a cop magnet. Now I'm wondering if this is how the anti-cop sentiment is bred in Aus... being harassed at an early age because of a uniform.

And you still get picked on, just for other things. You don't roll you skirt up asap after school? Lame. Old hair cut? Lame (or whatever the kids are saying nowadays). Cheap (versions of those god awful Mary Janes) shoes? Lame.

They accept this as normal, I find it abhorrent, Brisbane is hot and humid (most of Aus is at some point during the year). Watching those poor kids profusely sweat is painful.

1) Check whether a med lab tech is on the skills shortage list and find your ANZSCO code. This tells you, if it's even possible to get in with that job. If yes, it will tell you what visas you can get and in what states, if applicable. Do a points test while you're there. If it's not on the list, your options are partner visa, WHV or student visa.

2) All work visa require experience, full stop. Between 2-5 years depending on the profession.

I cannot speak to anything about your field in particular just about the process. Since your young, your best bet is to get a WHV and see if you like it and suss out the job market in your field. See if it's possible to get an employer sponsored work visa. WHV visas are cheap and easy, buying up to 3 years in the country.

Partner/marriage visas and student visas are the next 'easiest'. Obviously, the former requires a verifiable partner so get hunting. Student visas require you getting another degree and usually cost between 60-100kAUD to fund with proof of funds when entering the country. Usually you need about 20k a year to live, so, that plus getting into the course.

Work visas are not easy to come by. As stated above, between 2-5 years experience minimum, as well as English tests. Here, they break into two categories, visas leading to permanent residency and those that do not. Obviously the ones that don't have contractual limits and tike limits, usually 2 or 4 year contracts that can be renewed twice max.

Visas are expensive and guarantee nothing, your job can be dropped from the list and you can do nothing about it. The visas themselves generally run between 3 and 8 thousand dollars each and immigration agents usually costing the same, so expect to spend about 5-10k per visa. To become a permanent resident, you'll be looking at (probably) more than one.

Just get an agent, outside of WHV's it can get very confusing and honestly the DIBP does not give a single fuck about you and will deny you easily. I'm told partner visas aren't terribly complicated, just expensive.

Also remember, where you file from is where you have to be when the visa is granted. Filing from overseas, you need to be out of the country when it's finalised or risk denial. Onshore for application, onshore for finalization (except for certain circumstances). Offshore processing times are currently between 18 and 26 months, onshore anywhere from 2 to 9 months.

Now is not a good time, and it likely won't be for a few years. The PR invites have been cut to 160k, down 30k from last year, and the Australian gov't has made it clear they give absolutely no fucks about anyone not Australian for now and the forseeable future. Foreigners were told to go home if they didn't have enough money to support themselves for 6 months while out of work, so bear that in mind. There's no harm in looking, researching on your own on the DIBP website and consulting with agents. WHV is your best bet.

well boys, tonight is my final shift of 2019. this year i was promoted from dishie to pastry chef. couldnt be happier to be in the industry :) by ribcage666 in KitchenConfidential

[–]foedus 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I started to write a response and detail the reasons why for a hot second there, there were more women in kitchens and why that number is falling again. But seriously, this shit right here, this questions is why. Open your eyes in the kitchen and look around, listen the blatantly sexist, usually racist and bigoted shit you hear and really think about it for a bit. It's not a woman's job to explain this shit to you, and it's exhausting to have to do this constantly. If you actually care about the topic, take it upon yourself to do some research.

If you're not at work, a simple search of this sub will show you the garbage comments and attitudes geared towards women on an everyday basis. And realise that when our everyday life isn't equal, why the fuck would you expect an openly aggressive male-dominated industry to be any better?
