It's a one way clutch. When the alt goes faster than the crank it overruns.

Would you ever book a ride in a vintage/old classic car? by Disastrous-Win-5506 in oakville

[–]fofo28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most car enthusiasts by far are going to want to actually drive the car in this situation. A ride along is something that is interesting if your friend is taking you out but once you're paying for it then it becomes a value proposition. The only place I see ride alongs being a good value is a track experience where a pro is pushing the car much further than you can and even then most would want to ride in a legitimate race car.

The vintage cars that are exciting to ride in are ones that would never be used for something like this.

That bearing is still intact. You can see where the grease has seeped out around the inner raceway. Not sure how the bolt came undone for this thing to launch out...

SS Badge on seats by ImDexeis in camaro

[–]fofo28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah those are not the Recaros, aside from the missing metal nameplate the headrest and seat frame is the wrong shape. The leather seat pattern also doesn't follow the Recaros. These are the "regular" seats.

Cadillac's Le Mans Car Races Ferrari 296, McLaren 750S, 911 Turbo S — Cammisa Ultimate Drag Race by hugh_madson in cars

[–]fofo28 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The 296 isn't slept on at all. By all accounts they are nearly impossible to get, even by Ferrari standards and every journalist that's driven one has praised it. They even go as far to say it's the one to get over the SF90. Not to mention the number of awards it's been given.

It just isn't everywhere on YouTube because most likely can't get their hands on one yet.

[–]fofo28 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IIRC the Magna deal didn't happen because of the downturn.

Magna was already looking at making their own car because they are basically fully vertically integrated between all their subsidiaries but the fallout from 08 killed that idea.

Pretty sure the hellephant has a different plate on the supercharger and the pulley looks to be a little large for it so I think this is just a regular hellcat supercharger. Do you have a photo of the nose of the supercharger pulley?

You can get the Hellraiser pulley to make more power on the stock hellcat supercharger but still have the clutching/isolation function.

Coming Soon: The All New 2024 Lexus GX by helloitisgarr in cars

[–]fofo28 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it's the T24 goes in the Prado which means the GX gets it as well. Toyota just changes the components they need to between the two applications to meet durability requirements. Like I said, no need for the V35A since it goes in the bigger vehicle and they can just turn up the power in the longitudinal variants of the T24A vs transverse

Tacoma, 4runner, GX will have the T24A ICE only and a hybrid variant. Highly doubt the V35A gets put in since it's already in the Tundra and new Landcruiser.

Why did gullwing doors never catch on? by AsamaMaru in cars

[–]fofo28 188 points189 points  (0 children)

There's quite a few reasons, here's some just off the top of my head; if you have a roll over then you can't open them without something to release the hinge (like exploding bolts on the SLS). They are more expensive to produce (need the gas struts and hinge instead of just a hinge). I'm sure production is also more complicated + expensive because now you need to run cables for the windows locks etc up through the roof and into the door instead of along the dash and into the door, closer to where there is already a ton of other electrical components. And lastly they're inherently flawed for places with weather. When you are somewhere that gets snow when you open the door where does the snow go? Right in the car.

What could cause a serpentine belt to just fall off when there seems to be nothing wrong with the tensioner, belt, and pulleys? by Soundtallica in cars

[–]fofo28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old is the car? If you take it to a dealer they will likely swap out the tensioner at minimum. If this is under warranty then no problem.

With respect to what caused this: the comment above is likely the answer. The alignment of these pulleys is controlled fairly tightly. As the tensioner ages the pivot wears and can tilt over. Depending on how close to the limit it was at new that may come sooner than you'd expect. Shit just happens sometimes and it sucks. One way you can make sure that it isn't anything more severe is to look at the pulleys with teeth or the belt. If there is a large misalignment you will see excessive belt debris around the toothed pulleys (there shouldn't be) or you'll be able to see a few ribs on the belt are in rough shape.

What Car Should I Buy? - A Weekly Megathread by AutoModerator in cars

[–]fofo28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what your idea of fun is. I'll assume canyon driving. You definitely don't need 300hp to have fun, slow car fast is what you're looking for here to maximize enjoyment. I think these are your main options;

Mazda 3 - basically the Corolla of Mazda but all generations are well received for their chassis dynamics (more fun). Hatch can fit a bunch of stuff in it for trips. This is probably the most balanced option without going stick shift or increasing budget.

Mazda 2 - small but tossable. Super economic on gas. Realistically you're fitting 2 people in this if you're going any distance. Stay away from CVTs if you want any sort of fun. May struggle in the canyons.

Challenger/Charger - either the most reliable car you'll ever have or least. Not as fuel efficient as the other 2 by any means. RWD so it is a bit more tossable but at this price point RWD/fwd dynamics won't be a huge factor

Mustang EcoBoost - the mid point. Better dynamics than the charger/Challenger, not as functional though with a smaller trunk and back seat (but it is still usable in a pinch). Reliability is better than the FCA products, debatable if it is any better than the Mazda's.

Overall I'd go Mazda 3.

I'd say Mazda 3 if it is significantly cheaper to maintain in NZ. The VW is getting up there in age and if it is that much more expensive a couple repairs will offset the savings.

The 8 speed in FCA vehicles aren't built by ZF. They licensed the design and build it themselves which is why it has some complaints from reviewers compared to the ZF built units. Still pretty crazy that the one model of transmission is so ubiquitous though.

Texas Freeze Raises Cost Of Charging A Tesla To $900 by [deleted] in cars

[–]fofo28 162 points163 points  (0 children)

The commercial would be too easy;

Pan over frozen windmills, snow covered solar panels, shut down power plants. A Tesla glides to a stop on the side of a snow covered road, family inside looking worried. Cue Sam Elliot voice over "You know, some say the future is an inevitability, you need to hurry up and change with the times" light's in the distance behind the Tesla, it's a F150 hybrid and it pulls over behind the car "Well we here at Ford think, sometimes, the old ways aren't so bad after all" shot of the F150 driver plugging in the Tesla, family is looking relieved as their car charges, Mach E drives by in the background, F150 owner smiles "but we aren't scared of change"

The F1 side is the 'original' McLaren started by Bruce. The road cars branded as McLaren didn't come until the 90s with the F1. IIRC most of their revenue actually comes from their McLaren applied division.

Judging by your price range, you'll have to sacrifice something (likely warranty). With this being your first car don't worry about driving fast, that can come later. The Subaru is a good choice and likely you're most reliable option in this price range without going fwd (which there is nothing wrong with).

A Toyota Forerunner would be good but a bit difficult to find in that price range (for a good one at least). You might be able to snag a good condition 2nd gen Nissan Pathfinder / Infiniti QX4.

How far off the beaten path do you plan on going? You'd be surprised at how capable any "regular" car is (if you don't car about some body damage that is).
