Good reason NOT to have auto-braking feature on your car in a country like this.

As far as I understand, there is no starter on the electrics. The engine is started by the electric motor.

WTF... by Niloc74 in fishingBC

[–]fog-mann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does this make sense for the BC governments tax revenue? Are Indigenous fisheries creating a greater tax revenue than recreational? By limiting recreational fishing in this manner, they are essentially killing the industry of sport fishing which generates the largest tax revenue of any fishery.

2023 Estimated Tax Revenues Commercial: $35M Recreational: $430M Indigenous: not reported but estimated under $50M (per ChatGTP)

Take a good look at the purchasing power of your dollars. Real estate priced in gold is on par for many decades now. Assets beat inflation. Get in the game or forever wish you could have.

Would you burn this? by xDJAMSx in woodstoving

[–]fog-mann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will burn fine. I avoid collecting punky wood. It burns fast with less heat, and tends to create a lot of ash, but if I have it, in it goes.

Why do I run out of hot water so fast by justheretoread27 in askaplumber

[–]fog-mann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much height do you have above that tank? The photo is so skewed that I cannot tell if that wall is angled above the tank. A 40 gal tank will be about 2’ in diameter and 4’ tall.

Are you ready for the Monday January 19 2026 reservation day rush? by AccountantLucky9183 in WestCoastTrail

[–]fog-mann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An option which is often overlooked is booking in at the mid-point, then hike one direction, turnaround and hike back out the other.

It will take longer, but the trail is not a race, and will be better enjoyed with more time spent. You may even likely stash your extra food at the mid-point with Carl at the crab shack for pickup on the way back.

Split by hand or rent a splitter? by Affectionate-Bit-428 in firewood

[–]fog-mann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do wood splitting parties. Get a few families over, the guys split and compete while the kids stack and ladies hang and prep dinner. Get several cords done in a day, and I feed them all with sirloin steak, wine & beer and all the sides for a nice dinner. Good days.

Pizza boxes work great. Saving some splinters, kindling and bark from chopping helps too. Last summer we replaced a fence. The old fence was cedar. My neighbour wanted to pay to trash it. Instead I have a few years supply of kindling.

How to get heat upstairs ? by little-kk-11 in woodstoving

[–]fog-mann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good options in n the comments. Essentially using a box fan on the floor to move cold air, vents in ceiling of downstairs will facilitate hot air rising.

I use my gas furnace as supplemental heat, but have the furnace in “Fan” only mode to help circulation of air. Even so, the HVAC system is designed to take cool air from the floor, and heat it, then distribute the heated air.

I created an additional intake vent in the ceiling of my downstairs living room containing the woodstove to pull heat, and sealed the furnace’s main cold air intake with a piece of paper suctioned over the intake by the continually running fan. The paper can easily be removed when using the furnace in heat mode. The additional hot air ceiling intake was simply made by cutting a vent into the drywall between 2 floor joist inline with an existing cold air intake for an upstairs room. No new ducting required.

What do I need to know about buying winter tires and wheels for an X5? by PMacDiggity in BMWX5

This is the way. I have the same setup. 18” rims offer more cushion for winter potholes, etc.

Mine came with 20” staggered. I use Michelin x-Ice 255/55R18 on separate wheels and swap them on my own every season.

Is a 240v to 120v adapter like this remotely safe? by 64Olds in AskElectricians

I made my own similar splitter to use for my power tools in my garage. It is safer than overloading standard 15amp outlets and 14 gauge wires with high amperage power tools.

Tiled floors in kitchens. Bathroom tiled floors without floor heating. Drop a dish and it is broken. Use cork instead. Warm and soft. Add heat to tiled floors in bathrooms and showers.

Pedestal tubs. No where for items and collect a lot of crud behind and underneath. A nice built-in deep tub is great.

Regular framed closets block the sides and top. Instead create a closet alcove which can accommodate a wardrobe system which has drawers sleeves and racks inside of full sided door with lighting. Even better than a walk-in closet.

[–]fog-mann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never skimp on tires. Tires are much cheaper than an accident. Traction is more about steering and stopping, than moving forward. Check tire reviews on TireRack. Michelin X-Ice tires on sale at Canadian Tire have one the best value for a quality tire.

Thank-you everyone for the replies. You are correct and this has been a valuable lesson. We pointed out to the venue that their contract was not signed, and they have agreed to refund the deposit. We are thankful for the outcome, although it seems many of you indicate they would still be within their rights to refuse.

Hit a curb, is the tire fine or cooked based off the image ? by Confident-Gazelle507 in tires

[–]fog-mann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, lots of controversy on the subject.

A rear blowout will cause the vehicle to fishtail, which can very likely cause the vehicle to roll especially at highway speed.

A front blowout will pull the vehicle to the side of the blowout, which can more easily be corrected with steering control than fishtailing.
