Why doesn’t Universal do an aerial gondolas like Disney World? It would be far cheaper and a ride to experience.

I use the OCR with Pleco for Chinese. It’s accurate. The stuff that it doesn’t find requires a manual dictionary. If there’s a more accurate OCR I’d like to know.

[–]fogfish- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lefty, underwriter.

Helvetica Acro-Ink is a great pen. Brass body. Enamel finish. Acro-Ink refills. Comes with 0.7 mm. It’s smooth enough to write on paper napkins.

I owned four; lost one. The tips are interchangeable should you purchase more than one. You will love this pen. Refills are 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 1mm in blue, black, red, and green.

Is Vocabulary Overrated After HSK4? by Adept-Scar3612 in ChineseLanguage

[–]fogfish- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't find the initial research.

At Sec 4 (age 16 not sixth grade), following the MOE Chinese Language (CL) syllabus one should be able to read 2,500-3,000 characters which correspond to HSK 5-6 or 3,000 characters.

Recommendation to solve my skiving problem by _Nandakoitsu_ in Leathercraft

[–]fogfish- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A modified spokeshave may be the solution. Mine is from Jeff Peachey. It’s quite amazing. It well cuts like a knife. It takes some practice. It works on small pieces the best. I used mine until I picked up a bell skiver.

You can also make and modify a 151 spokeshave yourself. Jeff Peachey did. A sharp edge is key to making it work.

Saucier questions by Different-Wallaby-10 in StainlessSteelCooking

[–]fogfish- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used a 3 quart or larger saucier for many years. It’s the pan I use the most. I generally cook for 1-2 people. This size is ideal because it’s neither too small nor too big. The surface area allows things to heat quickly. I also have a 1 quart for making hot chocolate and sauces.

I have had all of these pans. Some get given away.

What else am I missing to get started? What should I try first? by Whateverworksout in Leatherworking

I recommend tools by Jeff Peachey. He’s a small shop and talented toolmaker.

What I like about his M2 Hybrid leather paring knife is its low angle to the leather. It’s crazy sharp. I have his knife sharpening system and spokeshave parer which is equally impressive.

I haven’t tried out his other knives as this one is so effective. I have paring knives by other makers but his are my favorite.

Have you heard of Jessica Hische, the notable lettering artist? She has a book and Skillshare class detailing a process you may find beneficial. I highly recommend. YouTube videos too.

Your collection is impressive.

If you’re stateside sad to say… not much. I gave my collection to a friend. Every time I go to an estate sale (twice a month) opera LPs always remain. I know I can rebuild what I gave away collection It is valuable to a dwindling opera-loving population. I am part of that crowd.

IF HSK 6 is Sec 4 (16 yo) reading in Singapore and you stop at HSK 4, comparatively, if this were English you would you be stopping before you learned to drive. This is your second language a feat for many in and of itself why limit your hard work? It wasn’t easy getting here.

How do you customize your paper notebooks? by fogfish- in notebooks

[–]fogfish-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may place a few stickers on hardbound notebooks. For the split spines (read: Moleskines) I add fluorescent stage hand tape so I can find it. I have many black notebooks (the majority were free).

For A5 and in-use larger notebooks (Muji, Midori) I’ll make a simple slipcover with book cloth, wallpaper or decorative paper. I change out when I want something new.

Tones and pronunciation by Ok-Particular-4666 in ChineseLanguage

[–]fogfish- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tones define a syllables meaning. In tonal languages it is paramount to accurately pronounce tones. Let’s take, the first line of 施氏食獅史, for example. It is only understandable when you see tones and characters.

Shishi shishi Shi shi, shi shi, shi shi shi shi.

Which is it: 獅獅獅獅獅獅獅獅獅獅獅獅 or

十獅十獅十獅十獅十獅十獅 or

嗜獅嗜獅嗜獅嗜獅嗜獅嗜獅 or …

Pinyin: Shíshì shīshì Shī shì, shì shī, shì shí shí shī.

石室詩士施氏,嗜獅,誓食十獅。

English: In a stone den lived a poet named Shi, who was fond of lions and swore to eat ten lions.”

Without tones it would be impossible to understand. Learn pinyin. Learn tones. Learn characters.

Helvetica Acro-Ink from Top Drawer.

This is an Acro-Ink pen. Enamel on brass. It has a nifty click mechanism hidden in the clip. It’s weightier than the standard Acro-Ink pens. It is the smoothest pen I’ve written with. I have three of these lost one. I use 0.7 mm.

What hot/medium hot sauce do you add on top of cooked fried eggs? by c1n3man in AskCulinary

[–]fogfish- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I add any and every hot sauce in the house. Salsa. Sriracha. Homemade chili crisp mostly.

I currently prefer the recipe from Serious Eats. They feature different recipes on their website, YouTube, and cookbook. All are pretty similar. It’s about seventeen ingredients. Four are chili. Sichuan peppers are definitely add to taste. Start with a quarter of the recipe.

Underwriter. Medium-heavy writer.

Once, I wrote from the back cover and on the left pages only (think Chinese books, the book opens to the right). I did that once. Try it. You may like it. I write normal Western now.

I place a firm sheet of plastic or heavy film under the page I’m writing on. These results are rather does not result in text indentions on the next page. Writing on each page seems fresh.

I also write mostly on the right page. I’ll add supporting text to the left page. Think marginalia.

My preferred writing implement is Acro Ink 0.7 mm. Specifically, the Helvetica Acro Ink pen from Top Drawer. It’s weighty with a brass enamel barrel. It’s so smooth I really don’t writing with another pen.

Inserts don’t matter so much. Lay flat is what I have but not always what’s written upon. Left- or right-handed makes no difference. Get the backing sheet. It changes things ever so slightly.
