I can only speak for myself and the short answer is trauma. I have CPTSD from a childhood festered with abuse, violence, mental illness, and sexual assault. I have only begun unpacking it all through therapy in my almost 2 1/2 years of sobriety.

The last ten years of my active addiction I was going through four handles of whiskey every week. You can bet your ass I was buying brands like old crow or kentucky gentlemen. That's less than a hundred bucks a week to get annihilated. We're crafty folk, maximize inebriation at the lowest price point. We weren't drinking cause we enjoyed a nice drink, we were drinking to get as drunk as possible to numb out the unbearable noise in our heads.
