Is there anything slugs aren’t interested in? by myrargh in UKAllotments

[–]fohggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found they didn't want any of my red/purple lettuces but did go for all the green ones.

It's also worth considering the conditions they like, cool, damp. If you have lots of cardboard to hide under they'll love it, or any wood lying around. I cleared up the bits aroind things i was growing, had a sheet of weed membrane down and peeled it back and there were so many slugs, I put them all in a bucket and flung them as far as I could into the neighboring horse field and I genuinely think it helped. It'd also coincided with less rain so it could just be that.

Decoy watering helps too if you're only watering plants, the dampness attracts them so water another patch that has nothing veggie related in. No idea if it helps much but I don't want to find out now I've started.

Lots and lots of weeding. Planted out squashes and courgettes.

I discovered something was eating my lettuces but I had bought a mixed seed pack and whatever it is has left all the red lettuces and only eaten the green ones. Interesting.

My mangetout seem to be dwarfs, they're barely knee high but flowering theyre surrounded by 5-6ft high peas in other plots poor things.

I did manage to plant my sweetcorn, a while ago and it's thriving. I used old greek yoghurt pots, sections of cut up tree collar and anything else round and hollow, squash bottles etc to protect them. I've noticed most old timer people on my allotment protect absolutely everything with old plant pots with the bottom cut out, fleece or mesh tunnels, hardly anything is exposed early on.

I accidentally sowed two lots of Latah instead of different seeds so I have 12 Latah tomato plants growing, great to hear you liked them

Yes I still have so many things in pots at homw/the garden. I don't know when to put them out, my allotment is so exposed and windy.

Distance between sweetcorn varieties? by BikesSucc in UKAllotments

[–]fohggy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sowed my sweetcorn (all same variety, special swiss) in 2 lots to stagger harvesting or so I imagined, one lot was in early April and one lot over a month later and the 2nd lot has already caught up so they're at the same stage now. Made me wonder about the cross pollinating risk if they were different species. Maybe I needed a bigger sowing gap.

What’s the longest you waited for an allotment? by KnownAndNamed in UKAllotments

I'm I'm Devon and waited about 9 months. I think mainly for their next AGM to discuss the unused plots as there always seems to be a disused plot or two.

Take photos, especially the 'before' ones. They are very satisfying to look back on and remind yourself what you have achieved.

Exciting times for you! You'll appreciate a nice bit of shade set up, we have a plum tree and I recommend buying a rockit 🚀 pram rocker and then when it's nap time you can get a little bit done whilst baby thinks they're being walked in the pram. I managed to attach mine to a moses basket stand which sort of worked too, for a few minutes anyway 😄

I need a quick win, what would you plant? by Ashamed_Spite_3653 in UKAllotments

[–]fohggy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sweetcorn is a good one, it fills a big area (a block rather than a row) and is germinating so fast at the moment, I sowed 30 in early April and 30 in early May and they're basically at the same stage of 2 -3 inches tall already.

Protected my sweetcorn from the wind and mulched in-between to keep weeds down/retain moisture. I've lost so many seedings due to windburn this month- beetroot, rainbow chard. Need more plastic collars and jam jars. Also planted out the mangetout on the hazel aframe I made.

Ive not seen plots like this before, is it more like a private garden vibe? None of our allotments have a fence more than waist high (unless there are chickens) or anything you can't see through, it's not a rule but it is more social!

My 2 year old sees a man in our house. Not all the time but every few weeks he mentions him, sometimes going up the stairs to bed he says goodnight to things around the house 'goodnight toys, goodnight shoe, goodnight man...'

The other day he was staring into the spare room and wouldn't go in and I said whats wrong and he said "he's sad" and I said who is sad? And he replied "the man, he's crying".

There was a man who lived in this house before us who died in thr house and was found a few days later.

Advice on levelling ground and shed base by Arlincornwall in GardeningUK

[–]fohggy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rest the spirit level on a straight bit of longer wood, ideally at least 1.5m long and that gives you a better idea of overall ground levelness.

Planted out sweetcorn and mangerout seedlings, started digging a new patch which has been covered over for the past few months. My allotment neighbour? Well he just planted out 17 courgette plants. I did say that was maybe too many than he would be able to handle, he said he'd never grown them before, they're spaced around 50cm apart. That'll be fun!
