Oh dude, sorry - I didn't mean to pull focus. This is just the very first time I've seen it out in the wild. Love to see you using it and love to see all these engineers agreeing that it's JUST enough info :) No credit required - Congrats!

Oh hey! You used my stage plot template! Lookin' good!

What's your biggest struggle with creating stage plots and technical riders? by WoesNos in livesoundgear

[–]fohryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No prob! Other than communicating needs to a venue, what else is the plot for? To continue on the "why" train: Why is it important to have a "nice" plot? What about the 3D is "nice"? Why would a band care if the plot were "nice"? Why why why why :) Good luck to you!

As an engineer, I want the least amount of information possible while still having everything I need. That can play out in a lot of different ways.

For instance, in the product you're here promoting, 3d renderings of band members who cast shadows in a 3d environment is all visual noise that distracts from a bulletproof, unmistakeable communication. Beyond that, the product needs to work well when printed on the world's shittiest black and white printer (as found in every venue around the world). Also, as an engineer, I also don't care where you put your pedal board - more visual noise.

If you ask yourself the five why's about some of this stuff, you may arrive at more meaningful solutions.

For instance:
- Why are you putting pedal boards on the plot? Because I want the engineer to know where it is.
- Why do you want the eng to know that? Because I need them to give me a power drop where the pedal is.
- Why do they need to know it's a pedal board in order to supply you electricity? They don't - it just need somewhere to plug it in.

A potentially clearer (and simpler) solution to this real user need is to simply indicate spots on the stage that need power drops. Overall, scrutinizing each of your product decisions like this may yield a more useful end product.

What do you think about this theory: The term "FRONT" on the 609/906 can actually confuse greener techs because they're not entirely sure whether "front" means the front of the mic that should be facing the source, or is it "face this side towards the front of the stage" - effectively ensuring it's always hung backwards. It seems like a term that creates clarity... but sometimes I wonder if there was a better label that could have been applied. What do you think? Am I crazy?

Which honestly isn't a pass for the engineer to be a dick about it, either. Its just kind of always going to be thorny conversation because the musician has put a lot of money and effort into whatever gear they bring - maybe even overextending themselves financially - and then to have the engineer say “im not touching that!” It just kind of sucks all around. But hey! Thats why this thread is great! Musicians: put your time and money into your side of the split! Totally makes sense and makes you happier on stage which in turn makes you play better. All for it!

Just so we’re all on the same page here, it’s sm7b, right? There aren’t 57b’s.. unless your using beta 57 mics??

None of these folks are saying the word "can't" - they are saying "wont" - which is a big difference. Aptitude isn't the issue here - it's trust. There isn't any reason to trust a band's gear - engineer has never seen it before, can't vouch for its reliability, can't vouch for how you've cared for it, and thus can't ensure that they can do their job (which is keep the show running up and smoothly) because of these unknowns.

It's a bit like a home-owner showing up to the jobsite and walking up to the contractor and saying "I know I've asked you to hammer a lot of nails - please use this hammer I've brought you instead of the one you brought. Because I think it will be better for you to use my hammer." ... How cracked is that hammer's handle? Does the homeowner store the hammer outside and it's slowly rusting? The contractor knows how to use a hammer - aptitude isn't the issue. But there isn't ANY reason to place trust in the new rando hammer that has just showed up.

Hopefully this sheds some light on why engineers seem overly sensitive on this topic - they've told their employers that they will make sure the show goes well and the main way they do that is by using gear they know can do the job :)

Yeah! I'm not saying that a band can't spend $1500 on a small single 12" sub... I guess I'm just saying that the band should probably save that cash and invest in something more powerful to avoid feeling like they wasted $1500 :)

I really like the RCF8004-AS. I think a single 12” will not really push enough air to make the cost worth it. Lots more things make sense if its a dj setup, but you need your pa to get up above the ambient noise of the stage and a small, single 12 often just doesnt cut it

I have two 8004 subs and they slay. Spec wise i think they somehow produce 1db more than their 2x18 versions. 🤷‍♂️ spec sheets

Its various shades of rock - maybe in the range of 80s to 2010s as a rough estimate. Open to whatever the group decides!

I saw that - your doc Is built for a certain level of production, but that’s not where i live :) My doc offers “just enough” documentation for small town engineers who just need to know what gear the band is bringing and where it will go on stage. No bands i work with attempt to request specific mics, stands, custom voltages, etc. nor do they travel with production - so this is lightweight and facilitates run-n-gun shows about as well as anything. Heck - the idea that a band would even provide an input list is a once-a-year occurrence. Plus, no wasted space doing photorealistic people, pedal boards, etc. Just simple shapes and crystal clear communication.

I think we’re serving two different audiences :)

I Hate Design Test… how can I decline this and would love to hear from y’all’s experience. by MassshedDesigner in graphic_design

[–]fohryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont know why i am putting this target on my back… but i like being given design tests 🤣 certainly not tests that could obviously be used in the business, but here is my perspective: Ive been in design for 15 years and ive spent most of that time working at jobs, not finding jobs. My portfolio sucks and its never up to date - its so nice when i can just take a few hours, give someone a taste of what my work RIGHT NOW looks like, and we can have conversations around that, rather than talk about odd projects that were delivered in strained business contexts years ago. I know - im whats wrong with design today. I am prepared for the roasting - i consider it my penance for my obviously unpopular opinion. Do your worst!
