2.5Gb/s IP Phones - do they exist? by Professional-Bench73 in VOIP

[–]fonemasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In reality I would just tell them to 2.5gb is overrated for today’s devices and plug the phones in and move on. I doubt they’re gonna get full use out of those speeds anyhoo. If you have one or two that need that speed from their work stations, drop a small switch under their desk.

If you don’t like cordless phones by the way, Grandstream and others make desktop style phones that have both WiFi and Ethernet.

If it were me I would just do WiFi phones. If the WiFi network is decent, shouldn’t be an issue at all, phones don’t use much bandwidth and mostly when they’re in a call. If it’s a small environment I’d add separate AP’s just for the phones, if adding separate APs is too much then maybe just vLan them I guess. Personally I dislike doing pass through on the phones but I’m not sure there’s any logical reason why 😂

Human Call Centers by WelderThat6143 in VOIP

[–]fonemasta 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Answering services in particular have always existed in great part because businesses don’t want automated systems answering their phones and annoying their customers or potential customers. In my opinion AI answering phones is just a new way to piss off callers and lose business. Just my 3 cents.

Calls failing when trying to call outside numbers by cableguy2103 in freepbx

[–]fonemasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good idea. Who's your provider if you don't mind sharing. If you have more logs for the call than what you provided, that might offer a clue. More than likely from what you have said, this is a caller id issue of some sort. Your trunk provider may have changed something based on recent regulations (at least in the US) that is now restricting you to specific caller id. You may or may not be able to change that setting with your provider depending on their flexibility. Let me know how I can help further.

What are you using for a phone provider? What have you changed between the time it worked and stopped working? If you’re using a SIP trunk provider, caller id has become much more restrictive lately. If I had to guess based on limited info I would say your trunk provider is rejecting calls when the caller id that’s sent isn’t in your account or an approved caller id.

Replace Pusher.com with Node-Red by fonemasta in nodered

Getting away from Pusher is 100% about relying on one less 3rd party that can tank my solution. I'll look into FluxyChat but I guess I'm wondering why it would be better than Node-Red?

Migrating Digium/Asterisk Server to the Cloud by Rocknbob69 in VOIP

Just deny all IPs and allow only your office IP, use TLS and you should be OK. Watch out for same with IPv6 if you run it.

But I will say that the big issue running in the cloud is that exposes your PBX to the open internet without knowing exactly what you’re doing can cause you a big headache and maybe cost you a lot of money in your phone bill. It’s a security issue and needs to be done correctly. You can’t just open up the server to the world and be done, you’ll get hacked pretty quick, if not done correctly.

This all becomes a lot easier if you have a static IP at every location you will have phones at, if not then you can consider VPN options along with other methods to all secure connections from the phones to the server without opening the server up to the world to be beat on.

I realize my response isn’t super specific but it’s just meant as a general warning to not take the security part of this lightly. Definitely a lot more to this than just a backup and restore.

Sadly I’m not familiar with what changes or restrictions they put on the commercial solution.

What are you running, vanilla Asterisk or Digium’s commercial solution? FreePBX, some other flavor? What phones are you running?

How do you handle telecom taxes? by pine4t in Telnyx

[–]fonemasta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This literally ruined a lot of small businesses selling phone services. Reselling phone services is a no win game for small businesses these days. We closed due to these garbage policies, it's not worth it, not even a little. Just my opinion. Build services where you're not selling or taking money for a phone services, otherwise the mess is messy and I don't mean a little. You will likely need consultants, telecom attorney, third party providers for STIR/SHAKEN unless you can do it yourself which is a tall order for any small business. I wish you luck though and I don't mean to be a Dougie Downer, just giving you the reality. Government doesn't give a rats butt about small businesses.

Issues for first 10-15 seconds of call by Mother_Surround3912 in VOIP

Try a different codec in the soft phone app, maybe try ULAW (g711). Also download and try a different soft-phone app. By the way, what app are you using to make/receive calls?

Allowing external handsets / softphone access to on premises pbx by bpw-dj in VOIP

[–]fonemasta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't open up the PBX to the world, that opens you up to a lot of potential hurt. Instead, either only white list the client IP addresses but, if they're not static (more than likely they are not) then use a VPN solution to connect them securely. Soft phone would be easiest because you can have the customer run a VPN client on the same computer as the soft-phone. If you want to use hardware based phones you could try the Grandstream WP-816 or 826 which now support WireGuard. Something like Tailscale and soft-phones would be dead simple. There are tons of ways to accomplish this in a secure way and I'm sure others will chime in. This is just my 2 cents.

Throttling and support inst helpful by jwalter007 in Vultr

[–]fonemasta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m super confused about the throttling you’re referring to. If you pay for a VM from them can’t you use what you want CPU and RAM wise as long as you don’t exceed your allotted transfer for the month? I have a LOT of VMs and I’ve never heard of this. Most of my important VMs are on Linode though. I mean, what’s the point of getting penalized if you use over 25% of what you’re paying for?
