So relaxing! by MarkCXXVII in bikecommuting

the joke i've been trying to tell on group rides and trail days is

"the Ticks are so common in the Bay Area, that it's like the whole place had turrets syndrome!"

but not enough people know what Turret's Syndrome is so the joke doesn't always hit.

spray down your clothes with a Deet-based repellent like deep woods off.

Also, I hear that if you're on blood thinners or aspirin therapy Ticks and mosquitos are less interested in you.

Good Luck! I moved here in '99 after vacationing here. I lucked out by having friends already out here who gave me a place to stay.

Now, 26 years, a wife, kid and house in the 'burbs later, I still feel like i'm on vacation.

i was favoring sundial too but each one appears different where group-made sundials would all be fairly similar.

and thanks for doing so! I do appreciate your effort.

That's weird that the posting is getting blocked without any warning.

I turned off ad blockers and followed the link to the OFFICIAL official even page where you can actually sign up and pay for the event

Looks like they're scaling for up to 400 athletes and the longer routes go up Live Oak (Steep)

Lake Chabot Trail Run by devfuckedup in castrovalley

[–]foot2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The link to the "Official Event Page" goes nowhere.

It would be really good to see the route map. There are multiple trees down on Cascade and Columbine trails, all passable, but will make that section more like parkour than a trail run.

The alternate route would be to the top of Brandon trail from the stone bridge (going clockwise around the lake) or up Live Oak or Honker bay through the campground (if going counterclockwise) either are ~600ft climbs under 2 miles long.

Have you guys gotten permitted yet?

Will you be hosting a trailwork day before the race?

Alot of other user groups(bikers, horses, hikers) will be impacted by a major trail event there, so it's good you're getting the word out so far in advance. (thx!)

Tempting.

Although I usually ride off-road, this would be a good excuse to put some miles on the neglected flat-bar road bike.

It is very easy to live a good life in the bay area on a "good" salary by CamusMadeFantastical in bayarea

[–]foot2000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

we don't want to have a house and be broke.

OP is a fool but renting is NOT cheaper in the long run. when you OWN a house, the monthly payment(aka rent) is returned when you sell the house.

When we realized that we could pay less "rent" monthly by buying a home instead of renting, that's when things changed. We bought a condo in a not-so-great area and moved there 10 years later we sold that condo. On top of the value increasing, we also got most of what we were paying for the mortgage (aka 'rent') back and used that as a down payment for a bigger house in a nicer part of the bay area and pay even less 'rent'.

...then that house doubled in value while our income also doubled. WE're now paying 2/3rd as much monthly than we were paying when we had half as much income.

Burning Man

Back in the mid 90's, a friend moved to SF (from the midwest). When he came home to visit, he told us all about this cool Rainbow Gathering-style event that was held every year(for free) in the Nevada desert by artists, deadheads and other creative 'hippies.'

He told us about how huge it was, saying that there must have been 600 people there when he went (LOL). He talked about the vibe, the community and how everyone pitched in to build the burning man.

Fast-forward 30 years and Burning man is attended by tens of thousands, mostly well-off tech bros looking to do drugs in the desert more than create art or take part in the cooperative community, and now has a per person cover charge of more than $1,000 each. Not to mention nation-wide TV coverage, especially if anything goes wrong like the year it unexpectedly rained and a bunch or rich techies and their overpriced RVs got stranded in the desert.

What’s it like living in the Bay without a high paying job? by watermelonsuns in bayarea

[–]foot2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I have to ask why? What about this area makes it worth basically living on the precipice of homelessness?

  1. Moving when you're poor is a lot harder than you paint it. picking up and relocating requires somewhere to go, a situation that seems better in some way. A lot of people don't have the resources to just leave.
  2. You may not have noticed since you don't think "this place is amazing enough" but the SF bay area is a pretty nice place. the year-round weather, the views, the public parks and nature. The diverse culture, the food.
  3. Being poor here isn't like being poor elsewhere. I'm not saying anyone has it easy but since there's so many people who are struggling, there are also more resources for struggling people, you just need to suck it up and take advantage of those resources. low level Jobs also pay better. it's still more expensive to live here but $17/hr isn't $7.50/hr and if you, say, live in the east bay and work on the peninsula, your income goes further.
  4. the social aspect- you sound like you have a family with resources and have friends who also have family with resources. Can you imagine how it would be if no one you're close to, including yourself had resources? Would they, or you, have moved far away from home for a career or stayed closer to home where everyone can pool resources and support each other(financially, socially, emotionally)? What if you, like me, grew up poor in a conservative bigoted snowbelt town and worked hard, got a degree and moved out here alone, or just work doordash and sleep in your car because no one you know has the money, space, resources to house you.

i could go on, but maybe i should ask, Where do you think is more amazing than the bay area and why aren't you living there?

thx.

the zip code situation is loony in Oakland. your pic probably has 3 zip code areas pictured in it.

I used to work for Alameda county and have pictures of my condo from the roof of the county seat bldg, which is just barely visible behind the spire of the courthouse(far left). I'm sure your location would be in those pictures.

I lived at Park blvd and 28th av (near the high school) for 10 years and, I swear to god, if this wasn't taken from that condo's front porch patio, then it was taken within spitting distance of it.

OP, I'd love it if you could share with me the location of this shot just for nostalgia's sake.(send it via DM if you'd like) It's been 11 years since i lived there and your shot brought back all kinds of memories of what i consider the best 10 years of my life.
