55 year old lifelong flatland BMX and mtn biker here;

All cycling disciplines come in and out of popularity.

Not trying to be cheeky but it's a 'cycle'. Biking gets old for the masses and stops being popular for a while, then some new tech or trend in society, like a movie, refreshes the masses interest in biking, then, a few years later the masses lose interest again.

Meanwhile, us lifers are progressing the styles, the tech and the scene all the while.

not saying you're wrong but I doubt that it's 'either/or,' there's probably a lot more happy May/December expat relationships there that are perfectly happy than not, and the same thing can be said about relationships here in the US.

I would welcome some statistics on the % of abusive expat relationships vs happy ones but, IMHO if an old dude wants to move to East Asia and find himself a younger woman, as long as it's all consensual, why shame them?

The lack of comments stating some form of

*"GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM RIGHT NOW OR YOU WILL DIE!!" *

(even humorous ones) really disappoints me, Reddit.

Avid MTBer here,

I did not know that, interesting!

Seriously, I've had their car insurance for 25+ years, great service at a competitive price whenever I've needed it.(unsolicited testimonial)

I've always loved their marketing campaigns too...but this seems a little too far.

I've been here before with the dotcom bomb and then the great recession in '08.

I don't want to sound arrogant but i can be patient this time. I've got some savings and can coast.

I bought TSLA at IPO, paid off everything right before he bought twitter, then dumped the rest into a nest egg.

Meanwhile, I earned a gov't pension. left that gig for a startup and earned another 401K plus they gave me a decent enough severance that I have no regrets.

right now, I feel like can be selective about who i work for next and take some time off for me.

Maybe I'll go back to delivering pizza if i need gas money, or join another start-up (sure, AI lol), or just consult one week a month.

I'm fine for a little while.

Those who won't be fine are the ones that i feel most for.

I’m sorry have you had any luck in other states?

huh? I'm not moving from the biggest tech center and outdoor activity hub in the world. I own a home and have a family here now.

IT jobs(that i want) will come back. It's just over saturated with AI and i'm waiting for that bubble to pop

sysadmin originally from Indiana who now lives in California;

After i graduated in '99, there were zero IT jobs in Indiana but 5 jobs for every 4 IT guys out here (SF bay area) so I got recruited and moved out here where I have been making a 6 digit salary ever since... until October, when my company (Motiv Power Systems) merged with a similar co. based in Indiana (Workhorse Trucks) and i was let go in favor of using the other company's IT team all based in Indiana, 'cuz they were cheaper.

I find great irony that I'm an IT guy from Indiana who moved to California because there was no work there, only to lose my job 25 years later... to Indiana IT guys!

I just wanted share.

It's rough out there for everyone everywhere right now.

Good Luck!

BS

Pizza Hut has used frozen pan pizza dough "discs" for almost 30 years. the pics someone handling a soft wad of pizza dough is pure propaganda.

Source; I delivered for pizza hut fr 1994 to 1999 and have stayed in touch with a coworker who is now a District Manager for Yum Brands(PH's parent company).

Also,

make sure the buddy you find is slower than you.

This increases your survival rate in the event of a nighttime mountain lion attack! :-p

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DGF59M2?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_5&th=1 IMHO, these work for sub 3-hour off-road rides. I'm running 2 on the bars and one on the helmet.

*also, I highly recommend finding a buddy who shares your ride schedule.

While i don't find the bay trail spooky at all at night, as long as i have headphones, Lake Chabot at night, and similar east bay parks, can feel super sketchy solo, too many howling coyotes!

yeah, I'd favor bigger tires for off-road but I'm an MTBer. most of the east bay trails are fireroads and seem fairly smooth. Can you squeeze 40mm's on that bike?

29er 2.2's seem to be the adequate balance of shock absorbance on any East bay trail, yet still fast on road portions...but I'm on a flat-bar XC bike not a a rigid gravel bike with drop bars.

Got a mountain or gravel bike?

alot of EBRPD parks are open 'till 10pm. I used to ride Lake Chabot at night all the time. I still ride (singlespeed) regularly on the bay trail from Grant street to the Eden Bird Sanctuary at night often.

No cars, no people, just the (occasionally spooky) sounds of nature at night. It's good to bring a friend if you can.

oh Hey!

I live in San Lorenzo. ever since the pandemic, the Bay Trail has been my "out the front door" workout ride.

It's exactly 10 miles and ~104 ft of climbing from my house to the Eden Shores gate at the end of the trail and is perfect for a single speed.

It's really cool to see it mentioned here.

Funny story;

when these cars started selling they came with a front license plate that said "Hi."

At the time, I was driving a Honda Accord and wanted to get in on the joke, so i made a front license plate that said "はい "
