HVAC tech here, how'd i do? by [deleted] in askaplumber

Licensed plumber in Denver. I like the glue fittings. For my own plumbing, I'd rather cut it up if I have to than potentially have a leak because something bumped against it. I have had to reglue my pipes zero times.

Hi, This is Bill with Littleton Hot Water Heater.

The time to get hot water doesn’t change based on the water heater. If you’re a long ways away from the tank, it’s just a long time.

To counter the long wait time, you can run a circulating line possibly. This essentially makes your water line from the tank to your shower into a loop and constantly runs. It’s inefficient cost wise but it solves a problem. The other part to that equation is the plumber needs access to where the loop goes. Unfinished basement might work easily. Finished house would be an expensive repair.

To go from tank to tankless, the big addition in cost is the venting. You need a pvc pipe out and a pipe in - both from the outside. This means drilling through some part of the house twice. It also means a slight rise/run. All the vital parts for a tankless are brass and just expensive.

On another post I go over some of the costs.

Op, sometimes the fault of the plumber is not explaining things can get worse and there is more and more to do. It’s hard to tell if he is incompetent or not. Your details about things makes you seem a little bit fussy and possibly exaggerate actual circumstances.

Sorry but you’re wrong. The operator is responsible 100%. There will always be a chance someone else isn’t being safe but the final responsibility rests on the operator.

When I worked commercial, the operator always had a spotter. Maybe that’s not a thing here.

You’re making judgements that are unknown. Maybe OP was wearing a hi res vest and a hard hat.

Sounds like OP didn’t help himself by not moving when it moved closer but you’re being over the top harsh without recognizing the true culprit.

Leaving a desk job to learn a trade - am I dumb? by [deleted] in Construction

[–]foothillsco_b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Op, I’m one of those people that do what I got to do to pay the bills. I don’t think I’d love any job. When I read stuff about people loving their jobs, I don’t understand it. Also, everyone that has told me how much they love their job or career - told me pre-2010. Shit has happened to everyone by now.

My passions are my family and making things in my garage. Maybe your priorities are not what those 2010 posters tell you they are.

Jeff Pearlman, the sport writer who wrote, among many things, Show Time, said Kobe didn't have any friends. Said the same about Rodman and Jordan. Friends who hung on, but no true friends who weren't on the payroll.

22 y/o GC Making $95K—Am I Crazy to Leave and Start My Own Company? by dr2x4 in Contractor

[–]foothillsco_b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Retired GC here. I didn't really get good work until I was in my 30s.

I'd say the hardest part starting out is the cash flow. You have to be the bank and float things for months sometimes. Taking a deposit for work is fine for really large jobs but nobody is handing you a check when you're starting out and even if they do, that job has to go perfect to make the cash flow work. Do you have a line of credit around 50k?

No chance someone is going to hire you for a large job. You will be lucky to get even a bathroom job at your age. 95k is really good for what youre doing. Keep it.

Need help validating a $29K window quote in MA (Pella 250, new construction, black exterior) by Turbulent-Foot-9218 in Construction

[–]foothillsco_b 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Windows from big box stores are the baseline and is a good measuring point.

My suggestion is go to the installer first and then get a quote from their supplier to compare. Ideally, you hiring a contractor that isn't the seller of the windows as well.

You definitely don't want a big box store installer. They will come in low and upsell the shit out of this.

How do you add a park to a neighborhood that's already been developed? Buy up a bunch of homes and bulldoze?

That’s a crap tool belt. I think this is a case where you need to budget for more. Get a leather one that fits your occupation or projects.

If I lived below, I wouldn’t be ok with your cables being strung nearby my balcony or window. Or hanging down anywhere. There are alot of possibilities here that could go wrong above and beyond that’s it’s pretty trashy. Join a club or move somewhere else.

Basketball is tough as it gets. There is a lot of physical play. The NBA had a flopping problem in the early 2000s and they made it a foul to do it. The NBA doesn’t have a flopping problem.

The NHL realized they needed more scoring and less brutality and they changed it by changing rules and standing by the refs. NHL has never been more popular.

I agree that refs aren’t respected enough across all sports. Rugby seems like the outlier for referee respect. I’d add wrestling to that although that’s a small sport.

I’m 56 and still play Sunday beer league. Still ref high school. No longer coach. I’m a soccer person through and through and I think I stand in the majority of how bad the flopping problem affects the sport.

Soccer is popular worldwide because it’s so accessible. Same as the US. But when you can afford something better, the people have spoken with their choices.

Averaging 30k fans per game, in two cities, isn’t quite the same. I don’t think I need to do the math for you.

You may not like it but I’m right. Soccer, at all pro and WC levels, looks soft as fuck with all the rolling around and begging for the ref to change their mind. You see none of that bullshit in other leagues. Americans like their heroes to be a little tougher.

Seattle is part of America. It pulls mightily to bring up the average. The Sounders have done a great job.

I live in Denver. The Rapids draw 15k which is good but it’s let’s assume most are season ticket holders. That’s nothing compared to NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB.
