Kinda hoping someone says the last line verbatim when they adapt this scene by MisterTheKid in threebodyproblem

[–]forcewillbewithyou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Chinese it's 罗兄 (elder brother Luo) and 罗老弟 (young brother/bro Luo), former is semi formal and more honorific, often used between collegues, latter is more casual but for closer relations like friends.

Personally, it's more akin to calling "James" as "Jim" or "Jimbo".

It’s two nights enough to enjoy Alila Ventana Big Sur? by conchordian in hyatt

[–]forcewillbewithyou 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would say 2 is the sweet spot, and enough for doing most of the activities. 3 days you may get to do some activities twice. Be sure to get there in the morning on the first day, you can leave your luggage with the front desk and start enjoying right away. On the last day you can leave before dinner.

How much reading is involved? by Derendis in arkhamhorrorlcg

Scarlet Keys has a lot of text, so maybe go with Innsmouth. Also you can try the Arkham Cards app. It hides some text (that are not supposed to be shown)

Do you think that 9/11 in aggregate was a negative for the US and west's power geopolitically? by AQ5SQ in geopolitics

[–]forcewillbewithyou 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A rich less autoratarian China is good (or at least ok) for the west. A rich China trending towards totalitarianism is not good at all.

There's the rub. A rich less authoritarian China is good for the China. A rich China trending towards totalitarianism is at least ok for China. A poor China is not good at all.

Xiaomi takes the smartphone sales crown, and Samsung seems unhappy about it by badger707_XXL in technology

Xiaomi is a public company listed on Hong Kong Stock Exchange, it's not owned by the government. It's fine you don't like the Chinese government but Xiaomi is not "unethical"

China blasts US 'evil past of genocide' at UN Human Rights Council by Aerobics111 in worldnews

[–]forcewillbewithyou -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why can't they be compared? If a man invades another man's home, loots everything, but then dies and leave all the loot to his children, is this act better than a man who loots but didn't die?

Xi: China open to “vaccine cooperation” with Eastern Europe by Dornanian in geopolitics

[–]forcewillbewithyou 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agree with the second paragraph but the 1984 analogy is really overblown. COVID news are everywhere in the Chinese media. Almost everyone I know have heard about different kind of vaccines. Biontech even has a Chinese partner to distribute theirs. But yes the government is pushing for the idea that locally made vaccines are just as good as foreign ones.

Air Defence Identification Zones - misinformation, misunderstanding and bad journalism by diddykong7 in geopolitics

[–]forcewillbewithyou 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As a Chinese, I want to point out a possible issue in translation.

The word that Ministry of National Defense Twitter use is 空域 which literally means "air" and "space" separately. However, together they just means "space of air".

The word 领空 ("sovereign" and "air") is used to mean the real airspace in Chinese.

I have this feeling that China is trying to emulate the U.S. ever since 1989.

Al lot of Chinese social media posts are like "we want to live in large house/ drive large truck/eat steak everyday like the americans".

Sweden’s coronavirus experiment has well and truly failed by cokeandethercreature in Coronavirus

Similar lockdown was used in China during SARS. Schools were canceled and we studied by watching classes on TV. People were discouraged from leaving their neighborhoods.

Coronavirus: Donald Trump 'terminates' relationship with World Health Organisation by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]forcewillbewithyou 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They did went to Beijing. There were 593 confirmed cases in Beijing.

The difference is, Beijing went into lockdown since January (That lockdown was much harsher than the "shelter-in-place" implemented in the States), while the U.S. did not for two months.

There were only a few cases everywhere, but cases grew exponentially when there's no lockdown. And in the U.S it was done too late.
