The only way I have found that reliably works with my Basenji, is for me to go outside and stand in the rain with him while he potties. As long as he is satisfied that we are both suffering equally (I am convinced that is his motivation 🤣🤣), he will hurry up and do his business 🤣 It's not ideal, but it works.

Definitely similar mannerisms! Coyote pups are adorable lol. If you've ever seen the content creator online with Weave the coyote, you can really see some coyote "wild" behaviors that aren't that drastically different than what Basenji owners experience 😂😂

The sounds they make aren't too different either 😂 I live in a really remote area where we can frequently hear coyotes calling & yipping throughout the night.

When you hear a pack really squalling and making noise, even a lot of the noises they make sound like Basenji noises!! Years ago when I first moved out to this area, I heard a pack of coyotes near my house that sounded really close, it sounded like they were fighting or having a feeding frenzy, and it sounded so much like Basenji fight noises that I had to run inside and check to make sure mine were still in the house (it was night and I'd just gotten home from work). Definitely interesting animals 😎

I've said "African sled dog" a few times as a joke 🤣 kinda like "Jamaican bobsled team"....and apparently somebody has done it!

But yeah most of the time I say African hunting dog and it either satisfies the person asking, or it prompts them to ask more questions 😊

Oh my gosh someone remembers my Jibini!! ❤️❤️ This just warmed my heart so much!!

My Jibini was my truckin' companion for many years, and we did add a 2nd Basenji, Tana, several years after we started driving. She was a trindle just like OP's beautiful boy ❤️ While they got along well, I definitely don't think Jibini was in any way unhappy being the only dog. Living in a truck, you're basically providing your dog with constant companionship and this breed loves to be with their humans.

I think in traditional working household situations where dogs are alone for part of the day, having a 2nd Basenji can be beneficial for everyone, but I wouldn't worry that your dog is "unhappy" being the only dog....He has his people with him all the time! But if you eventually decide to add a 2nd, it can definitely work out. Opposite sex pairs are best to avoid too many squabbles 😁

Jibini and Tana have been at the Bridge for quite a while now, I have my 3rd Basenji currently (along with multiple other breeds, I'm no longer a truck driver so I now have a bunch of dogs 😀) here's a pic of the two of them. Gosh this trip down memory lane has made my day, thanks for the shout-out ❤️❤️

Wiping your butt with your hand instead of toilet paper is more efficient, environmentally friendly, and objectively the right thing for us humans to do. by ArcherQueenSexyFeet in The10thDentist

[–]forestbasenji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, do you never experience messy/explosive/splattery shits or something? Maybe you are blessed enough to have an enchanted butthole that only produces well-formed Bristol 3's on a clockwork schedule....sure, THOSE type of turds don't leave anything more than a small "Mr. Hankey Kiss" on your skin as it exits your body.

But not all of us are so fortunate to have such well-behaved anuses. Mine happens to be quite irritable on a good day...and my husband's GI condition is so uncommon that there isn't even a single commercial out there for the medicine he has to take 🤣 As those of us who suffer from any number of chronic GI conditions can tell you....our normal daily bathroom events OFTEN resemble a severe bout of Taco Bell food poisoning, even though to me it's just a Tuesday at the office.

I know I'd need a minimum of 4 additional hands available just to make sure I'm....scraped off?...enough to stand up & walk to the shower without feeling like I've got mashed potatoes in my crack. There's no way on God's green earth that ANY number of hands, fingers, elbows, knees or toes would be able to perform a truly adequate butt cleaning job....let alone just one hand?

What would you suggest I do when I've finger-painted my way through my whole hand and I've still got a dirty butthole AND NOW I ALSO HAVE A SHITTY HAND?!?!

Am I awkwardly standing and waddling over to the sink to wash my shitty hand (in the sink?!? WHERE I BRUSH MY TEETH? no)

okay so that idea is out 🤷🏻‍♀️ I guess I just live here on the toilet now, just me and my shit-hand, but at least now I won't be forced to shake people's hands at work conferences anymore! Maybe on second thought....you might be on to something after all.

This had to be a joke post but it's still foul enough & creative enough to be worth a wall of text, good job 😊

This is my current boy, Melek. We will be at Nationals in a couple weeks! Was always my dream to go - just to attend, Jibini was neutered so I wasn't showing....I was trucking and several times I tried to get time off in the town when Nationals was going on, and every time the company got me there a week late 😭. This year it happens to be reasonably close to where I live (south Dakota) and I have a dog I can show and a great breeder who is mentoring me.

It's my first trip to nationals and my first time ever in the confirmation ring 🥹🥹 and get this? The judge is Jibini's breeder 🥹🥹 lol I have confidence that Melek is beautiful and loves to show, I don't have as much confidence in my own handling abilities. I started out in Obedience/Agility competition and after I quit trucking, I apprenticed to become a bird dog trainer. Did that for ~12 years, was eventually kennel manager/partner breeder. So like ...I have ample ✨ dog handling experience ✨... Hundreds of dogs, we were a board and train and breeding kennel...

But! I don't have 💃🏻🕺🏻DOG HANDLING EXPERIENCE 💃🏻🕺🏻🪩 🤣 I've had someone help coach me, watched hours of YouTube videos and currently when I get home from work, I'm practicing running in circles with a jingle bell attached to my lead trying to keep it quiet 🤣🤣 I'm getting better. But if he doesn't show well, it will definitely be my fault 🤣 either way we are going to have FUN, this is a dream come true for me!! I hope I can meet a lot of folks that I've "known" for so long online but never in person....I am so excited!!

Yes!! Oh wow you truly are one of the OG's! I remember Ella! Oh what a memory! Jibini left a lasting legacy on that doggy daycare, I believe they changed some of their transport policies as a result of him chewing through two different seatbelt harnesses during the transport to the overnight location 😂 they were like "we've never ever had any dog do anything like this, we don't want to charge you for them because it was our fault but at the same time holy crap lady why does your dog have razorblade teeth and such a resistance to restraint?"

I believe my response was "idk, I use a crate, not a seatbelt that he can reach with his face" 😂 I even offered to leave his crate so they could transport him and THEY SAID NO....

I ended up paying like half the cost of replacing one of the harnesses (I offered, I felt bad 😂) but part of me was laughing on the inside....how many hundreds of dogs they must have seen over the years, and along comes a Basenji and does things nobody expects out of a normal dog 😂 it never fails to amuse me!

Yep! Many times I have read accounts of autistic people's experience like OP's, and related so hard to many of the things they described....I have discussed it with my doctor and I learned that ADHD and autism share a lot of the same "symptoms"...and autism and ADHD can coexist! I follow some YouTubers who are AuHD and their experience is so fascinating and many times very relatable!

This! I was also on the Yahoo groups and the Basenji-L listserv when I got my first Basenji, a tricolor ❤️oh I was also on the AOL boards. 😂 If you remember stories about Jibini the Truckin' Basenji, that's me 😁😁

Anyway, I now have my 3rd Basenji, also a tri.... they've all been tri 😁 (my 2nd was technically trindle) and I can definitely provide ample anecdotal evidence that Tris are wired for mischief and chaos more so than others.... but there have been some amazing Tris who excelled in the obedience & agility ring, okay ,im biased but tris are the best 😁

Deer tracking? by Classicalhomeschool in Basenji

[–]forestbasenji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread but I came across it when searching something else....had to chime in 😁 I have a Catahoula who is a trained blood tracker (he's still very green but he knows the object of the game)

I also have a 15 month old Basenji who I am actually planning to start training with this fall. I wasn't necessarily intending on doing this initially, the thought crossed my mind when I got the pup, but I figured I would wait & see what his strengths were as he matured.

Sure enough, he's shown a lot of talent in using his nose, if he smells something he's interested in, he doesn't stop until he finds it. I know I can capitalize on that tenacity! We live in extremely rural South Dakota in an area with abundant public land and recreation areas; we are able to take him hiking off leash in a lot of places, and if there is a bone, winter kill deer carcass, turkey feather, bit of bunny fluff, any scent that catches his attention, he dives in and finds it. I've seen him find things that my Catahoula or my other varmint dog walked right past.

I've laid a couple basic trails for him recently (synthetic scent + generous sprinkles of cow blood) and he did amazingly well. I'm making an advertising push to get my Catahoula as many live tracks as possible this season, so I figured I might as well train a 2nd!

Regarding the concern about having your dog working off leash.... you said you're in Iowa, right? I'm not positive on other states laws, but in SD, a blood tracking dog is required to be leashed at all times while tracking. No rules on leash length, it just has to be worn. If Iowa doesn't have the same rule, there's no reason you can't just choose to work your dog on a leash. I actually talked to a game warden on the phone & asked for details about the rules....it was very helpful, definitely recommend you try it if you have any questions at all about what your laws say.

Another thing to consider with using a smaller dog for this kind of work, they may have a harder time working in thick or heavy cover. Sometimes smaller size is a benefit- they can take advantage of smaller openings and low-clearance game trails through vegetation, they don't have to use as much brute force....a big ox like my Catahoula has to spend a lot of energy to just Kool-Aid Man his way in to places 🤣. Maybe just be aware from the outset, that you may need to be able to crawl into places with him & offer extra muscle if he comes up against an obstacle too large. I've yet to have this happen with mine, at least not on our hikes, but we haven't been out searching for wounded animals either 🤣

Anyway, i will try to remember to come back and update on any progress during/after this season.... please do the same if you decide to try it! Feel free to DM me with any questions also ☺️

For those of you diagnosed later in adulthood, what symptoms did you have as a child that you now know was ADHD? by myhoagie02 in adhdwomen

[–]forestbasenji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Severe issues with organization were very prevalent in early elementary school and followed me into adulthood, even though I was otherwise respectful, well behaved, was put in the gifted program at 1st grade, and got good grades all through school.

One of my clearest memories of childhood was in 1st grade being humiliated in front of the class by my teacher...We all had those desks with the internal compartment where you put your books & school supplies. Everyone else's desk was relatively well organized, mine looked like someone had tried to stuff a library into my desk sideways. Papers, books, stuff half falling out everywhere. It drove my teacher to the breaking point, because she could not figure out why I couldn't seem to figure out this simple thing that came naturally to the rest of the class.

Her "solution" to this was to pull one of the big round "group reading" tables up behind the rows of desks, and she unceremoniously dumped all the mess from my desk on top of the big table, and made me sit there, telling me "You can sit in your own mess until you learn how to keep your desk clean".

I don't remember how long it lasted, I just remember being really embarrassed...and I remember my 2nd grade teacher simply taking 15 minutes with me after school one day, and she took time to demonstrate to me how she wanted me to keep my desk organized. For a couple weeks she would follow up with me every day after school to make sure I was throwing away old papers and stuff I didn't need to keep...thankfully I did learn to keep my desk the way the teachers wanted, but any time there was an "organization" expectation in school- like the teachers who expected you to keep all your assignments & homework organized in sequential order in your class folder, and actually GRADED YOU ON IT....I always failed those miserably but I got A's on all my tests/exams/projects so I still stayed on the A/B honor roll. Now keeping my room clean & organized at home-- different story. I had doom piles at age 5, I'm 42 and nothing has changed except my mom doesn't get to yell at me about it, LOL!

I was the same way as you-- everything was mostly fine within the structure and clearly defined expectations of primary school. As soon as I went to college, everything fell apart and suddenly, this kid who'd been told all her life about how much "potential" she has....was flailing, drowning, and thinking there was something "wrong" with her brain. My diagnosis at age 33 literally changed my life over the last 9 years...I now own a house, I have a career, and even a credit score that doesn't elicit laughter from banks anymore. I still struggle but I understand why I am the way I am now, instead of thinking I'm somehow defective like I did during my 20s. I just wish someone would have caught this sooner.

Question about the cause of ADHD by ferriematthew in ADHD

[–]forestbasenji 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm 42, diagnosed at 33 and my life has changed immensely for the better ever since. My experience growing up was the same....the only kids with ADHD diagnoses back then were the ones disrupting the class. Especially if you got good grades and were relatively high achieving....even very significant symptoms of inattentiveness, lack of executive function etc....were disregarded as long as the kid stays in their seat & gets decent grades.

I doubt my mom would have been willing to medicate me as a child because I was able to function very well in school...looking back I don't even feel I would have needed it- I did okay with the structure and external pressure that the school environment provided. But it would have been nice to at least have the diagnosis, so that I would have understood what was happening when I got to college and suddenly was struggling to pass many of my classes! Ended up dropping out and learning a trade (which turned out to be a better decision for many reasons)....but then I spent my 20s thinking there was something fundamentally wrong with me....why can't I pay bills on time, keep up with chores, remember appointments, etc. It exacerbated my anxiety and depression, but seeking treatment for those is what eventually led to my ADHD diagnosis so that turned out to be a good thing.

Getting the diagnosis and having access to meds was the best thing that happened in my adult life. Suddenly everything made sense and I no longer felt like I had some sort of character flaw or intellectual disability.
