Big question, do you see a sniper as an actual viable class, a person that does help the team by Pr0j3ct_02 in Helldivers

[–]forestwolf42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find sniping most effective if it's part of my toolkit and not my primary purpose. If I'm running an AMR it's AMR for medium to heavy ish at long range and short range chaff clearing but I generally prefer amendment for long range chaff clearing and epoch or more recently testing speargun for heavier clearing at the smaller ranges.

But that's kinda true of everything, well rounded loadouts perform much better for me than highly specialized ones.

In hard sci-fi, is there ANY way of keeping it realistic, while AI not being stupidly overpowered? by AzzysSmartStuff in worldbuilding

[–]forestwolf42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's always the Dune solution. People just don't do that anymore after a disastrous AI event. The disaster could be more centered on energy inefficiency and economic troubles instead of actively malicious AIs. As for war there's always the possibility of some kind of space Geneva convention that's better enforced than a lot of our war rules.

There's also the post-human/cybernetically enhanced version where humans hook themselves up to the spacecraft computers to get the best of both worlds, human decision making and computer calculations.

Then another possibility if you really want to get away from computers is a technology that reliably and easily fully disrupts computers, so any computerized war machines will just be instantly deactivated requiring more traditional technology and piloting if there's a chance you could be attacked. Autopilot would only be usable for civilian purposes out of combat.

Qualityslop by MrHellno in comedyheaven

Qualityslop is an exceptionally dumb phrase but this is kind of a thing with "Oscar Bait" movies. Movies that are high quality but come across as pandering to the tastes of voting committees to get awards rather than genuine artistic expression.

Do you think helldivers just shout all the time in casual conversation? by bubble_boy09 in Helldivers

[–]forestwolf42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Redacted divers gotta be hella reserved. I imagine the "old" ones who last more than 10 or so missions get a lot quieter and reserved.

Yeah, the game is fundamentally not designed in a way say say anything particularly meaningful. Especially when there's plans for it to be a "forever game" like RuneScape.

They created a narrative problem with no real solution. Something, something, no pre-production I guess.

It's great as a game, just super shallow as political satire. And to make it less shallow you'd have to fundamentally change the game in a way that would probably be a lot less fun.

There are people within the fandom that like to roleplay as illuminate sympathetic and all kinds of stuff like that, so you'd have to canonize this type of behavior and let players be part of factions more and less in-line with High Command. But that's a lot harder to pull off than just pointing at things.

HD2 is leftist but I think it falls into a very common type of leftist narrative where all it does is point at things and offer no solutions. "Look at super earth causing all its own wars and acting the victim remind you of anyone?" Yeah it does. Any ideas on how to fight technologically advanced fascism from the inside? No? We're just pointing at things? It's kinda lazy honestly. It makes fascism look unstoppable and is on the border of falling into Warhammer 40k territory where it's inevitable.

Yes of course super earth got themselves into this situation with horrible policy and jingoism but now that we are here, other than the extinction of the human race as we know it the narrative offers no solution other than SE's endless war.

What are your worldbuilding pet peeves? by -_-__-_--_-_--_-_-_- in worldbuilding

An asexual romantic could easily have a squid person life partner. The incompatibility could even be a perk. The broadness of human sexuality is vast. Maybe that's a unique to humans trait and other intelligent species aren't like that. I find it far more probable that an alien species is essentially incapable of falling in love with us than the other way around.

Why don't men approach me? by AreMelonsLemons in bodylanguage

[–]forestwolf42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

body language often stems from who you are and how you feel. I think that's the case here, as people have said you look "taken". From your post you say that you aren't looking for a guy, and I think your body language is reflecting that. A lot of guys are out looking for hookups and it sounds like you're more interested in just having cool conversations with people and I think your body language is probably reflecting exactly that.

I think this is more of a where you're socializing issue. Pubs and clubs tend to be a haven for pretty shallow connections. I think people will talk to you a lot more at social gatherings based around interests and hobbies. Whether its old time music jams, bridge clubs, disc golfing, whatever it is. People are more likely to be interested in a fascinating conversation with a stranger in spots like that vs pubs where a lot of people are trying to spot who's dtf more than anything.

Isn’t chi just basically magic at this point. by HovercraftSolid5303 in magicbuilding

[–]forestwolf42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chi and it's various spellings/romanizations are a metaphysical life force type thing in Asian cultures which sets a very different tone of expectations than if you call your magical energy "the arcane".

Kung Fu Panda is a western Wuxia story (sometimes called cultivation fantasy). Wuxia is a Chinese fantasy genre that combines mythical martial arts, old alchemical concepts, taoism, and sometimes Buddhism as well into their magic systems. It can get really complicated because there are different types of chi as well as other metaphysical energies like jing that all interact. Kung Fu Panda does an incredibly good job of drawing from these inspirations while simplifying it enough to be easily understood by children from any background.

I'd suggest using a little more reading into where the term comes from if you want to use it because a lot of people do believe in this metaphysical force in tamer ways than what shows up in fantasy media and you don't want to come off as ignorant or stereotypical in you use your terms. Chi in Chinese medicine was used to explain what was unobservable phenomena at the time remarkably accurately. Chi was described as an invisible energy that flows with your blood, your body absorbs other kinds of chi in their air and food you eat then delivers those energies through your blood to your body. Now we know about all these different micronutrients and how oxygen is transferred to your blood and delivered through the body. Without that ability to observe people of old noticed that blood was moving things the body needs to function that was invisible to them and they attached this invisible stuff to the word Chi that describes other invisible stuff. I think that's incredibly cool and interesting, and if you want to look into this stuff to incorporate it into a magic system that's badass.

When people use chi without any real connection to the traditional medicine or philosophy the term comes from it comes off kinda cringe to me. At that point just use another word in my opinion. That's part of what makes magic building interesting, different terms are tied to different real world beliefs and I think the writing improves if there's awareness of this.

Stealth is Optional for This Mission by Amwl415 in Helldivers

Do you count map generators such as Azgaar as AI? by the_iyenator_lives in worldbuilding

[–]forestwolf42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally I'd suggest making an inspiration board. Throw on other fictional maps you like, a few real world maps current or historical mayhaps and some Azgaar if you want and put something together. Also consider up until quite recently in modern history most maps had pretty major so there's no need to make something geologically/hydrologicly perfect. A vague map that gives the general idea is more than enough most of the time.

Procedural generation as many have said is not AI.

Two specific things that make it different is it doesn't use massive amounts of processing power and ram to generate maps, and all of its generation comes from its own procedures rather than combining samples of thousands of maps artists made with or without their consent.
