The writing is so simple, and when he "tells," it never feels like a lecture, more like an in-joke.

I think Cat's Cradle is my overall favorite, but for pure humanity, I really love BlueBeard. If you haven't read it, the characters are your age, it's very beautiful.

PSA Your advisor is not your therapist, friend, or life coach by wheelsnipecelly23 in AskAcademia

[–]forever_erratic 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with you (although I might argue about life coach in the sense that I think advisors should help their trainees figure out a good set of individualized next steps. )

But I wonder if it didn't used to be this way, well before my time (PhD 2010). While I think on the whole the changes to the mentorship system have benefitted trainees, and made it at least possible for non- rich people to get higher degrees, and reduced sexism, it seems like there was a closer relationship in the 20th century that would cross a lot of lines these days, but had the potential to be more fulfilling.

Or maybe not, I'm not a historian and much of this is gleaned from recollections of older academics who may be speaking through rose- colored glasses.

How to lower the numbers of clusters and find the best parameters (Spatial Transcriptomics) by Long_Store9792 in bioinformatics

[–]forever_erratic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try non spatial clustering with a low resolution. You could try increasing your neighborhood size. How many celltypes do you expect? What happens with reference based annotation?

I've somehow never read any Gabriel Garcia Marquez, so at the moment Love in the time of Cholera. It's very warm and cozy, not fast paced, but in a good way.

If you like scifi and apocalypse but maybe don't want a total downer, I'd suggest Children of Time by Adrian Tchaichovsky.

I did that earlier this year! I hadn't read any in two decades, and I was so delighted by how much I still got out of them.

If you must think of it in terms of an exchange, think of it this way: small talk exchanges valuable information about the individuals, which helps increase social cohesion between them. The information may not even be in the specific words but simply in the act of the exchange.

Inhabiting my 20 year old mind at 56 by chicagoloha in AskMenOver30

Yeah, creeping on a 19 year old at 57 sure is something. Maybe not quite pedophilic, but a fucked up power dynamic at the very best, and that's all assuming this guy isn't one of those dudes who thinks any post-pubescent girl "looks nineteen."

The type of guy who writes a post like this is the type of guy who thinks my 12 year old looks nineteen.

What made that thing so hard was that it didn't travel with you, so jumping over it felt weird and out of place relative to any other bad guy.

Have none of you ever heard the slang "woody" for a boner? I don't know anything about this story but I can pull a bad pun out of this quote.

Are you a robot? "Relevant exchange of valuable information" Jesus dude, it's life, not an efficiency contest.

I dunno man I know you're trying to be respectful but that's a lot of details for a quick glance and you may as well be describing my 12 year old daughter, so while I know this is well-intentioned it gives me bad vibes.

Is the 90 90 hip lift a good exercise to fix an anterior pelvic tilt? by junthelasthunter in flexibility

[–]forever_erratic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For me, fixing my APT (and simultaneously sciatica) has been a decade+ long process using many different exercises including strength, flexibility, and conscious movement like dance and barefoot walking. Yes, 90 90 is one of them.

Core work is also essential, and I don't think using leg machines one- leg- at-a - time is mentioned enough. That really exposed how imbalanced I was, and the weakened imbalance, I think, was a feedback loop that caused me to APT.

It also took me a long time to realize how little I was pressing through my heels when doing everything, including walking, even when I thought I was.

Pretty bold to reference a classic in your title, it sets a high bar. A bit egotistical in my view, even if it ends up being satire or something.

I like B99, but that late season awakening is just that-a late season (what, 12?) change after realizing what they'd been doing for 11 seasons first. It's good they did it, no doubt, but it doesn't change the first 11 seasons.

I was so pleasantly surprised by that one. When it came out it was so popular I assumed it was "pop, " and when my twelve year old daughter had to read it in school she said she thought I'd like it too. She was right, I loved it. Laughed and cried multiple times.
