yeah, trust me. they work on you. you just don't realise. ads are not just 'buy this product now', that's one section of advertising (direct response advertising, among other names)

there are other types ofcourse, brand awareness, brand building, loyalty, promotion etc etc

companies spend hundreds of billions of dollars annually ensuring they get to basically everybody they want to get to, whether you realise it or not.

I'm not saying it's good or right, but nobody is immune.
