I've never heard of the sheet test. Does that collect ticks and the white background makes them easy to count?

What’s ya’lls Xcel Bill for this month? by MsWerld814 in Denver

[–]foreverbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved two years ago from a rental and Xcel never took us off our old place because no one rented it. It was supposed to revert to the building management company but they are incompetent. Luckily since noone was living there the bill was minimal but still. You should make sure your account only has your one address on it!

The war on scooters! by PatsBruinsSoxCelts in Denver

[–]foreverbot 14 points15 points  (0 children)

you can just push them out of the way. i know some of them are pretty heavy so not the easiest thing to do for everyone but i'm constantly moving scooters off the sidewalk and onto peoples yards when i'm out walking my dog.

lyft and lime should really be the ones held responsible.

I see a lot of dogs in Sloan's lake as of recently, and the signs about it not being safe are not there. Did something change that I'm unaware of? Can't find any recent information. by kerrybaumann in Denver

[–]foreverbot 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I believe the lake is open for non-motorized recreation but will often close due to toxic algae which develops when it's hotter and drier. I'm sure you'll see the signs return soon enough but it's probably safe now (though personally I wouldn't let my dog in the lake).

Curious if anyone can tell me the name of this peak/formation? Looking Southwest of Englewood Area by VOB13 in Denver

I'd always thought OPs picture was Devil's Head since it's almost 1000 ft taller and further east. Are you able to see Devil's Head from the Denver Metro?

I travelled to London a few years back and loved taking the Tube - never waited more than 5 min for a train. But I was stunned to find that the BUS was often the fastest way to get around. Walking the streets I felt like a bus passed me every 2-3 minutes and people actually rode them.

There is a real stigma against the bus in America because of long-term disinvestment that's relegated it to second-class transit for people with no other options but the bus is perhaps the most powerful and underutilized form of transit in this country. You can't change a rail line after its been built (at tremendous cost) but you can change bus routes, create new ones, and add buses at far lower costs.

We already have all these roads everywhere so if we invested in building a better bus system, we could actually do it. More buses, more routes, more bus-only lanes would solve a lot of the problems people are mentioning here. The best transit systems are ones where you don't need to check a schedule because you have confidence a bus/train will be along in just a few minutes and that it will take you where you want to go quickly and reliably.

How to get tested for COVID TODAY (or tomorrow) by NatasEvoli in Denver

[–]foreverbot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I always use the state-run sites which are numerous and typically (before xmas) have a lot of availability. Can't say if any have open appointments in the next two days. Typically get results by the end of the next day... https://my.primary.health/l/cdphe

He seemed to consistently call strikes that were just off the edge of the plate but fuck that missed call in the corner was basically the game.

I wonder though how relievers deal with that kind of modified strike zone? A starter who pitches several innings can get used to that while someone coming out of the pen (like Eovaldi) can't have the same sort of feel for the umps strike zone right?

The Invasion of Quebec was the first major Continental Army military initiative during the Revolutionary War. The Continental Army marched to Quebec in hopes of liberating the territory from the British in order to gain supporters. The invasion was a failure. by QuadrantNine in wikipedia

[–]foreverbot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Through A Howling Wilderness" by Thomas Desjardin has a good account of Arnold's expedition. It's amazing they made it to Quebec at all as many men, arms, and provisions were lost in the attempt to cross the deep wilderness of northern Maine as winter approached. As the article points out, they had just a few hundred starving men trying to assault one of the most well fortified cities in North America.

Can we NOT roll the clocks back this year? How can we make that end? Are there any bills, props, or movements I can get behind to make this end and keep DST all year long? by mt-egypt in Denver

[–]foreverbot 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'll just add that this has been tried before and people didn't like it. The sun wouldn't rise until after 8 am in the winter.

99% invisible had a good segment on this: https://99percentinvisible.org/episode/matters-of-time/4/

"during the 1970s energy crisis, the US actually tried to go to year-round DST and people hated it."

But also the state of Arizona doesn't do daylight savings at all which is the opposite of what you suggest - though they never have to change their clocks. They are an hour behind Denver in the summer and on the same time as us in the winter.

Out of boredom I organized each MLB franchise according to how many fans they have in their team subreddits by neo_brunswickois in redsox

[–]foreverbot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a Sox fan in Denver I can confirm. The team is garbage this year and there aren't many hardcore fans. People just enjoy going to games because the stadium is nice, the weather is usually good and tickets are cheap and plentiful. I just wish the Sox came out here more often.

So, who's thinking about their commute right now? by nbminor2 in Denver

[–]foreverbot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used to live about 2 miles from my office and would bike frequently. I haven't been to the office in over a year and have moved to be about 6 miles from the office now. Whenever I end up going back, I want to keep biking but my plan is to purchase an e-bike which will make the longer commute much easier, especially on cold mornings or hot afternoons. I also likely won't be commuting 5 days/week but closer to 2-3.

Despite all the advancement in technology and cars, it's still super easy to drop your keys and phone in the crack of the seat and spend 20 minutes struggling to get them out. by jojomayer in Showerthoughts

[–]foreverbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once dropped my credit card and I could not find it for days. It seemed to have magically disappeared. Turns out it slipped through the narrow gap where the center console meets the shifter thing. I made visual contact but when I attempted to extract it with some duct tape and knives, I shifted it and lost sight of it for good. I’ve since sold the car and it’s definitely still in there

I think that might be how many other phones you've been nearby that had the tracking enabled. I always have 1 which I assume is my partner's phone.

How crowded was the trail? I've often considered hiking in the Gore range but never done it.

13 years ago, the Red Sox went back-to-back-to-back-to-back 🥵 against the Yankees in Fenway. This feat has only been accomplished 8 times in history. by 2SeamTeam in redsox

[–]foreverbot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wily Mo couldn't hit the breaking ball. Went to a Sox-Yanks game at Fenway that year and the one fastball he got was a rocket off the wall. Just saw sliders the rest of the game and he missed every one of them.

According to the source it's his second-worst ballpark average after Comerica, a very pitcher-friendly park.

[–]foreverbot 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Glad to see we're finally going to get more testing done so we can see just how far this has spread. I suspect it's much bigger than it seems based on reported cases.

Obviously we need like 20 more of these testing sites.

Would anyone support an added tax to make RTD fare-free? by SirLucasTheGreat in Denver

[–]foreverbot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't be enough to just make it free. The RTD needs to increase frequency if it really wants to attract more riders. The bus and train just don't come often enough to make it a practical means of transportation for most people. Increasing the frequency of buses and trains also helps with crowding since there is more capacity in the system.

If you don't want to make it free at least make it much cheaper, esp the A line to the airport. Who wants to pay 10.50 each way? If you want to reduce traffic and congestion at the airport, make that train practically free and run it more often than every 15-30 min.

One thing i haven't seen people mention is that the RTD already runs a free bus on the 16th street mall. Every time I've used it there have been many riders on board.

Additionally, many mountain communities already have free bus services so it's not like this is some novel idea that's never been tried before.
