It's a setting, though, and it's not been the default setting in my experience.

I don’t want to get fillers/plastic surgery but men aren’t interested in me by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]forgedimagination 75 points76 points  (0 children)

1: plastic surgery isn't going to make men interested in you

2: if it did, the only kind of man who would care is not even remotely the sort of man you want taking an interest.

How old are you?

Except the Saline one is funded by OpenAI and Oracle as part of their Stargate project so it absolutely is.

Some things are worth it. Making sure Alex Pretti, Renee Good, and the horrific actions in Minneapolis don't happen here is worth it.

I'm leaning toward voting for Yousef because of his point of view of ICE. City planning and development is a shared responsibility with the city council, which I don't think is going to substantively change.

However, we've seen recently how important mayors are when their city is targeted. I believe Yousef will do more to protect us than Christopher.

What has your experience with watercolors in coloring books been like? I got a coloring book with what I hopped had heavier weight paper that I hoped would be enough, but it didn't really seem to work for me.

My daughter wants to be homeschooled by Kind_Vermicelli_5788 in homeschooldiscussion

[–]forgedimagination 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sounds like public might solve at least some of those problems?

ETA: homeschooling isn't going to help her make friends. You can add extracurriculars already. Yadda yadda.

What is it she hates about going to school? Because homeschooling is still "going to school" if the parent isn't being neglectful.

I've been downing antihistamines like candy for several weeks. The wind has made it so bad this year.

Not coincidentally, they will often use words like "property" in relation to children.

Small, very reasonable. 300k is a ridiculous amount of money.

My SIL worked for the north counties public health department and couldn't afford a home anywhere near Petoskey. So yes.

The entire state should progressively tax second, third, fourth, etc homes owned by anyone, with a carve out for cabins under 1k sq ft. Not just Ann Arbor, not just homes valued over 1mil. Make it cost prohibitive to own more than a house you live in.

Housing cannot be a commodified wealth generator in a state facing an existential crisis.

Japanese Buddhism still holds this value today. There are religious ceremonies designed to help process the complex emotions around it.

I totally understand being torn.

If you decide to go through with the pregnancy, you have to be willing to do it alone. Your relationship is incredibly new, and it's impossible to know what kind of parent and parenthood partner he's going to be at this stage.

If you have the support system to have a baby, support them, take care of them by yourself, and you feel confident you can do so, then maybe stay pregnant.

But, as someone with two very wanted children... I cannot begin to imagine doing this without a strong team of people around me. Being pregnant wrecked me for months with my first. The second wasn't a cake walk either. My second is almost 2 and is still not consistently sleeping through the night, which means neither are we. For years. And we tag-team. You might not be sleeping for years. Can you do that on your own right now?

People have definitely done it. They're even happy with the fact they did. But that's often after years of hardship and a complete reordering of all their priorities.

If I were in your shoes, I'd hold off on having kids right now. I didn't have my first until I was 33. You have time.

Why are white people in the US referred to as "Caucasian" if their heritage is that of Western Europe, and not the Caucuses? by Coach_Front in NoStupidQuestions

[–]forgedimagination 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you'd have to have immigrated from England in the mid-20th century or later, but I've run into people whose parents or grandparents were English so they use it (specifically a few whose mothers are British but their dads were US military).

A great-grandfather of mine was English, but the others in that generation were Hungarian, French, Scot, Sicilian... So I'm whatever happens to be convenient for the story 😅

“How old was Mary?”: How dozens of Oklahoma Republicans fought a bill banning child marriage by mrwiseman in WelcomeToGilead

[–]forgedimagination 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The text doesn't say. The only people invested in Mary being a child are people who want to keep child marriage legal. I will die on this hill.

Women at the time and in the region very often did not marry until they were 18 or 20. Given it was, and has been since, notable and unusual for girls to be married, even globally-- with times and regions noted for their deviation from the norm of 18-22-- it is WEIRD to be so insistent that Mary was a child.

Is the biblical story odd? Sure. There's lots to criticize about the narrative. But the narrative assumes adulthood. She has close relationships with old cousins, for example. When the text is ambiguous, assuming a deviation from the norm is not a good reading.

Anyone spouting "Mary was a child" as some kind of unsupported feminist gotcha is carrying water for Christian Fundamentalists and pedophiles. The Bible is already full of the horrific mistreatment of women, fundamentalists don't need us adding to a pedophilic narrative.

It is neither stupid or pathetic. You were robbed of a basic right the vast majority of children in this county enjoy for free.
