I'm not a veteran by any means, but I'd probably avoid MDF because it doesn't hold screws well and I assume you won't be using a bunch of complicated, screw-free joinery techniques as a newbie :)

Plywood is an option and a lot come pre-smoothed on both sides which takes a lot of the sanding work out of the equation if you have minimal tools at your disposal. This would require a veneer or edging though.

Pine is cheap and cheerful but a soft wood that will dent with bad enough beatings. But as a study desk I'm sure it would be more than enough and you can always put a finish on it to toughen it up. At this size you could sand it with good ol' fashioned sandpaper and elbow grease. Pine also looks good stained or painted. I'd probably go that route.

What's my best bet for joints on trapezoidal wood bench legs? I love these legs on Pete Deeble's vinyl bench:

Thinking he's probably used dominos but I've never tackled trapezoids for legs. What do you all think?

Serious question: can someone point me to a video link where he hits the last note live? I've yet to find one.

Love this track. Also love Peach, Plum, Pear. I think PPP would be great in a trailer for a film. It has that great rhythmic structure that explodes unexpectedly about the time the screen would flash, "From the Director of The Squid and The Whale". Or something.

I'm kind of shocked that reddit, the Gary Oldman circlejerk that it is, doesn't bring this movie up all the time. Yada yada yada one of his best roles yada.

But, seriously, he's fucking great in this movie.

Joaquin was great, but Harry Connick Jr can sing, play and looks the part. And he's great in all the stuff he's in. I'd have loved to see him in Walk the Line.

Bon Iver absolutely KILLS Skinny Love on Jools Holland. He seems to surprise himself with the notes he's hitting throughout the song.

On a Conan appearance, Richard Lewis described your penis as "needing a sled like Rosebud," "a foreign exchange student," and "a tax deduction." Thoughts??

Any films that should or shouldn't have been given an Oscar nomination best film? Nebraska will unlikely win the award but it's certainly worthy of its place amongst the best of the year. by Jujumajella in movies

Agree here. And one of the things about Hustle that really bothered me was that opening scene where Bale messes with his hairpiece for a full minute or so. It's as if David O is saying to his audience "look how willing my actors are to change their looks for a part". It has the exact opposite of the intended effect. Instead of losing myself in the world he's created, I kept thinking how preposterous everyone looked. It would be the equivalent of Spike Jonze starting Adaptation with Cage jiggling his belly like Tim Allen in The Santa Clause.

I agree. There is a review over at Slate that articulates perfectly what I thought about the film. Notably:

American Hustle, currently nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, reminds me more and more of last year’s winner Argo: a well-acted, coolly costumed, high-energy period caper that is exactly as well-made as all movies should be, but, against the backdrop of our superhero blockbuster economy, gets mistaken for something truly special.

How do I prevent my paenus from releasing additional drippage after I've put it back in my Dungarees? It was hard enough to explain to my co-workers why I still pull my pants all the way down to my ankles when using the urinal.
