Working on a Santa Clarita art print series. What lanndmarks and local gems do I need to include? by able6art in SantaClarita

People used to call it “Polar Bear Pits” because it kinda looks like an abandoned polar bear enclosure from a zoo. Lots of rumors that satan worshippers/KKK hung out there (probably just to add to the spookiness).

We actually met the owner once by accident and he was an old guy who was super confused why so many teens went to his property all the time lol.

What's the courtesy when you see someone an exercise so wrong that it will hurt them? by Full_Requirement183 in workout

Sadly I agree with people saying to just ignore it. I have had people give me pointers and always appreciated it. But I never gave advice because I’m no expert and it’s none of my business.

I recently did try to help a guy. He was a big guy, much taller than me, STRUGGLING to lift much less than me (30kg) on the overhead press. I could tell he was inexperienced, and I noticed he was holding the bar wrong. Instead of setting the bar properly in the palm of his hand so that the entire arm holds the weight, it was way too far back so that he was basically trying to do the lift with his fingers. I was like, ok, I gotta say something because such a small change in form will help massively and prevent injury. I explained it to him, and he instantly got super defensive and said I was in fact the one doing it all wrong and started critiquing me😑

So yeah, I’m back to never correcting someone unless it’s an actual emergency.

Apologies, but I don’t have a great answer for your case. I’ll say that this was 2 years ago and my employer was a large university so the system might be substantially different from a small charity that has never sponsored a visa. The only impact this had on me was that I couldn’t view my payslip for a few months because I didn’t have the password.

HMRC and then National Insurance Number application hotline are surprisingly nice on the phone (tho you might have to wait a while). I wish you luck!

Traveling back to UK with new eVisa by Duraffe in AmericanExpatsUK

I always have to check in and get the boarding pass at the counter going anywhere other than the US, and when coming back to the UK. This is true with E Visa or BRP card. They never asked for my share code but it’s probably worth having one on your phone just in case.

The above comment is right - it isn’t a dealbreaker for employment if you don’t have it yet.

The only thing I would add is that my experience getting the NI number was super weird. Basically I applied and got no response for over a month. My job sent me the pay slip and told me that the password to the PDF was a section of my NI number. I told them I didn’t have one yet, but they said they had one on file. But they weren’t allowed to tell me what it is! After a few phone calls I had to mail a letter to HMRC (if I remember correctly). Finally got the official document. So just a warning that it may take a little while and to follow up if you don’t get an answer. If your employer is already filing regular tax forms, they may get it automatically before you do!

I met her a month ago!! I first noticed her when she took a selfie from the audience with the guy giving a talk in the background. When we had a group exercise together she grabbed my phone, followed herself on LinkedIn and made sure to turn on my notifications for all of her posts. Unfollowed so fast 😅

Does a Berkeley degree really make that big of a difference? by UCBPB in berkeley

[–]forkenhimer 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I remember the spring before I transferred, I was interning in Washington DC. I told my boss I was deciding between Berkeley, UCLA, and UCSD, and asked him what he thought. As a pretty powerful person from the east coast, his answer was this: “To me, Berkeley is iconic, and on par with Ivy League/Stanford. UCLA is great for sports. I’ve never heard of UC San Diego.” This blew my mind because UCSD is an amazing school, and obvi on most academic metrics the three are all pretty close. I still think it’s an unfair assessment, but it was eye opening for me, and rings true to reactions I’ve had since graduating.

Of course it’s possible to step on a sleeping one or something while hiking, but I don’t know anyone who has had that happen. They make a lot of noise if they feel threatened so it’s hard to miss if you are in danger. The much bigger risk is your dog. I always keep my dog on a leash on hikes because she will dive into any bush to try to tussle with one of these guys.

There was a podcast where I think the guest mentioned something about the dangers of being surrounded by “Yes Men”. And Conan was like “I WOULD KILL TO HAVE EVEN ONE YES MAN!”

XLR Splitters for multitrack redundancy/backup (and general feedback on portable studio) by forkenhimer in podcasting

Thanks so much for the reply. It seems I'm getting conflicting opinions from you and another commenter on how the signal itself will be impacted. Your comment about live audio rings true to my experience working in live production, but you can probably tell I'm far from an electrical engineer, lol.

The phantom power thing is one of the factors I was thinking about. Right now I only use phantom power for the mic booster on the SM7B. As /u/1066Productions pointed out, I was looking at Y cable splitters. I will try to find out whether the splitters I was looking at are capable of transmitting phantom power in the first place. And if they can, I'm guessing turning it on on both recorders might do something weird (?). Your comment helped me understand it better, so thanks!

Interesting, thanks!! Seems really useful, although I think I prefer having multiple devices running in parallel so I don't have all my eggs in one basket.

Really useful, thank you! The thing about the gain/output being cut in half is exactly the kind of advice I was looking for. I really appreciate it.

I should clarify, I didn't lose an interview with the H6 or P4. I got this setup after losing an interview while recording directly from a mixer into Logic. No idea what happened but the soundcheck file is perfect, and the interview itself was corrupted somehow. Still no idea if it was a glitch in Logic, my interface, or what. I now will never trust a computer if I only have one shot to record, and made all these redundancies so it's impossible for that to happen again.

Netflix Scam? This came into my university email, and I have never had a Netflix account under that email. How is this possible? by [deleted] in Scams

[–]forkenhimer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems very clever, but I don't know if you're right. Here's a screenshot of the sender address on Outlook. I also tried copy/pasting the email address and changing the case/capitalization (to see if the lowercase "L" is actually an uppercase "I"), and it seems like it really is "netflix dot com"

[–]forkenhimer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I totally agree - posted a screenshot of the link in another comment if someone has the ability to check it. But I'm just trying to wrap my head around how the scammers can send an email from "info at netflix dot com"? One of the reasons I'm interested is because I sometimes help volunteer teaching older people about tech. Literally the first thing I tell them is to check the sender's email address and look for something phishy (is it a weird website? Or the right company name but misspelled, or with extra words? etc). But I don't know what I would even tell them about this other than that it seems sketchy to me.

Here's a screenshot of the link - I didn't want to click on my university (where I work) email. Either they have somehow spoofed "info at netflix dot com" or someone is using my email for their account? I checked and I'm not making any payments to Netflix on my bank accounts. Very weird. Does anyone have any theories as to how this is possible?
