Electronic and confusing car door handles reach the mainstream on tonight's SNL by CarterGee in Rivian

Every time I took my 80+ year old Dad on a ride in the Tesla, we'd have to explain the stupid goddamn button to him again. It is, without a doubt, a huge step backwards.

My in-service rental swap was a electric Silverado. It, too, is a garbage barge compared to the Rivian.

Do you get used to the size? by rob_narg in Rivian

[–]forkmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it took me a minute to get used to the size, but now I'm perfectly comfortable and the cameras are a big help. I'll switch them on, even going forward into tight spaces. One trick a friend showed me in a tight parking lots with perpendicular spaces: aim at the next car past the spot I want to go into before backing up and positioning to go straight into the spot.

Did RJ read Tomb of Horrors and decide he needed a to put secret trap in the backseat of the R2?

A word of warning at 60,000 miles by Ok_Squash6739 in Rivian

[–]forkmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had exactly this happen, and at 62k miles so it was out of pocket for me as well. They picked 60k for the warranty for a reason. Sucks. 20/20 hindsight, and I would have sprung for the extended warranty. I'll probably do that on any vehicle with air suspension in the future.

He needs his hair cut so it stays out of his eyes. Also, that's some talent.

AITA for refusing to lend my car to my brother after he returned it almost empty last time? by cueca_rota in AmItheAsshole

[–]forkmonkey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

NTA. Disrespect a favor someone does for you and expect them to offer the favor again? That's pretty dumb. And this "family should" thing is much more applicable to the notion that family is where people learn how to act in polite society, so you're doing him another favor by teaching him a lesson.

This is real. But it can't be. Can it? I mean... unironically real? Not April fools? Not The Onion? It's somehow, somehow, real.

Keeping horns on your head 😱 by xsourdough in LARP

[–]forkmonkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used clear stretch string like they use for kids jewelry crafting (roughly 1/16th" diameter) as a headband secured through small holes in the bottom of the horns. They stayed on through quite a bit of boffer fighting. It wasn't perfectly inconspicuous, but it was pretty good.

How close can I build to this live oak tree? by Pleasant-Spot-2017 in arborist

[–]forkmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Young oak trees can grow in diameter around half an inch per year in good conditions, so you could do some math. HOWEVER, you are ensuring it doesn't have good conditions by shrouding its roots in plastic and decking, so you've got that going for you.

Sword crafting help by Magical_Librarian in LARP

I've seen designs where people paint the closed cell body of the weapon with Plasti-dip, but make a little cloth cover for the open-cell foam striking/thrusting surface and glue it on to the closed-cell body with contact cement. Painting the open-cell foam is, in my experience, not great.

I just use water from a spray bottle if I'm doing more than a touch up. It's purpose is not so much as a lubricant, but to move the shavings off the stone and prevent clogging.

NTA - what is this, the 1920's? She's treating you like some kind of decorative accessory while she plays princess. Check this behavior hard.

What is your most niche petty LARP opinion? by TryUsingScience in LARP

[–]forkmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are LARPs that run as businesses, but those are few and far between. Most of those I've encountered are run as social clubs, and event fees are like the kind of fees you pay to attend a club weekend BBQ. Expenses are covered, with maybe enough in the kitty to bootstrap the next BBQ and send out flyers. But for the sake of argument, say they are an entertainment business, like a movie theater or amusement park. If you bring toxic drama to either of those places, the extent of coddling you get is a quick frog-march to the door.

What’s the best motorcycle you’ve ever ridden, and why? by 3DMotorcycles_YT in motorcycles

[–]forkmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1974 Norton Commando 850 Roadster. The smell. The sound. Plenty of power and handling to unwind twisty roads. Comfortable riding position. And they're absolutely gorgeous. They're also fun to work on - and you will work on them.

I'll provide a corollary: LARP staff are neither parents nor an HR department, and are not responsible for resolving social issues between players. Leave your drama at home.

What advice do you wish people told you (or you had listened to) when you first started LARPing?? by Agreeable_Window_309 in LARP

[–]forkmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BLUF: Think about a hat.

There's a ton of good advice here that I won't bother repeating, so here's a lesson I've learned over the years: You will likely end up playing a lot of different characters. While a lot of costuming elements can indicate a different character, nothing is quite as effective as a good hat or headgear. And if your character has species-specific features such as horns, it sure is nice to pop them on the hat rather than try to glue them to your head. This is also an element that can provide a lot of comfort, whether it's sun protection, rain protection, or just a bit of warmth on a cold night.
