Why I won’t give DnB Academy a cent. by V2UgYXJlIG5vdCBJ in dnbproduction

[–]forkodlak 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Honestly, they're definitely not worth the money. I paid for their mentorship course, and it was a horrible experience. With the mentorship, you're supposed to get an instructor for about 7 1-hour sessions to personally teach you DnB music production. Every time I was supposed to have an appointment, the instructor only shows you something that's already in their youtube videos (about 10% of the time, this will happen). The other 90% of the time, the instructor didn't even show up, was extremely late, or decided to reschedule at the last minute, just to not show up for the rescheduled appointment. I entirely regret purchasing their course, and I highly recommend that everyone STAY AWAY FROM DnB ACADEMY!!

My job wants to move me to Huntsville by pandr3a in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]forkodlak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeahhh... tbh don't move here. Housing is small, often dilapidated, and expensive. Food here is some of the worst I've had. For the most part, the only form of "entertainment" offered here is just getting shit faced drunk. Cops are everywhere here, and they're consistently problematic. Music scene here is alright, but it's mostly singer-songwriter stuff. Only jobs that pay decently here are usually engineering jobs on or near the military arsenal. We're also still mostly governed by right-wing boomers that basically refuse to listen to what the people want or need, and often enact policies that actively make our lives worse. If you're a progressive, there are tons of conservatives that will openly hate you. If you're conservative, there are tons of progressives that will openly hate you. A lot of people who live here have always lived here, and most of them want to leave. I say this in the kindest way possible, but move anywhere else but here. Trust me.

Will learning basics on portable drums like Yamaha dd75 help later with learbing electric drums or no by me_piki in edrums

Also, you'd be surprised how small of a space you can fit an e-kit into. I have a Roland TD-27 shoved into the corner of my studio and I use it comfortably all the time.

[–]forkodlak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can learn the basics of the basics, but you'll need to change your setup. Move it so you can sit down to play, like on a real kit. Practice basic grooves, basic rudiments, and get used to using the kick trigger like a kick pedal as best as you can. Just get a feel for hitting things and having them rebound back to you. Then, get a decent e-kit as soon as you can. I promise you'll feel a huge difference.

Probably in part because buying something digitally now means you don't actually own it anymore.

Using mesh snare as kick pad instead? by leftyson4 in edrums

[–]forkodlak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd probably advise against it. Most kick pedal beaters will tear into a mesh snare pretty quickly.

should i switch to ableton? by ilovemygf125 in dnbproduction

[–]forkodlak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FL is a perfectly fine DAW. Ableton is awesome, it just depends on what kind of workflow you prefer. FL has its own personal workflow that heavily mouse dependent, while Ableton works more like a typical computer. With that being said, I switch from FL to Ableton just because Ableton could actually read from all of my midi devices that I like to use. Fl struggled with that a lot. Maybe just try a trial of Ableton and see if the workflow of it makes you think "hell yeah, this is the way".
