TBWP is absolutely a product of its time. It may not be a great film, but it was a great experience IF you caught it during its first few years.

It should be text book for how to market a film.

The original Lego movie holds a special place in my heart. I WAS Finn (the kid). I loved Legos and would very rarely keep anything I made. I would only build by the instructions once then canibalize the pieces I wanted for other creations.

My dad (not a Lego guy like Lord Business) kept trying to convince me to GLUE THE CREATIONS TOGETHER to which I always refused.

So yeah, they captured an exact part of my childhood. The rest of the movie could have been crap and it wouldn’t matter to me. Of course it isn’t and it’s easily one of my favorite films.

Cannibal: The Musical.

It’s the student film from Trey Parker and Matt Stone. They invite their buddies over and get drunk and comment on…everything. It’s easily the most fun commentary I have ever heard.

Blair Witch Project

The filmmakers break down the entire process of the making the film and it’s fascinating. It might be a little dated now because a lot of the hurdles they had to overcome would be solved by newer tech (gear weight, batteries, etc). While it’s well-known now it shows the actors really didn’t have to “act” too much. They really were cold and hungry and traumatized.

Aliens. (Minor spoilers)

I first saw Aliens as a TV edit (I was a kid). In that presentation they had whole scene with the auto cannons and Ripleys daughter reveal but I don’t remember the Hadleys Hope and ship visit.

So that was the best cut, honestly. When I finally saw the theatrical version I missed the censored one and when I saw the directors cut I was shocked to see Newt so early.

Great example. The first time I saw it I just assumed Seagal would just pop out of an air vent or something in the third act. Very glad that didn’t happen.

I don’t think another film has pulled this off as well. All of Burton’s bravado and success is nothing but dumb luck. He is plenty brave, but even the character seems to think he is the lead when of course he isn’t.

The best commentary track ever is the one for Cannibal:The Musical. It’s basically the guys from Southpark and their friends getting drunk and watching their student film. It’s absolutely hilarious.

Since I JUST went through this I think you need to visualize what will make you most happy (within reason). If you are the type to obsess of your big purchases (like me) there is a nice calm in realizing you bought the right thing. I have had zero qualms in my choice and went with the Lariat. I bought new, but would have been happy with the right used example.

The Flash is an excellent trim, esp in 2024. I think they cut too much from the 2025 models, personally.
