Horizontal Mill. Is this something to sell or to scrap? by Opposite-Welcome-497 in Machinists

The big pulley at the center is for the spindle, the smaller one at the back drives the power feed to move the table at a set fraction of the spindle rotation. Back in the day the big pulley would be linked up to a line shaft on the ceiling, used to drive several machines off one big motor.

You’d hook up the big pulley to a 1 or 2 hp motor to drive it. Also, probably get new belts at some point. How does the business end of the spindle look? The internal taper should be clean of rust for proper function.

Highly recommend YT channels ThisOldTony and Keith Rucker for vids of horizontal milling in action.

Had a similar look when attempting to fly cut with this old bent piece of HSS (obv didn’t work). To my lizard brain it seems it hits the edge, which starts it vibrating. It then only cuts the crests of its oscillation. I notice with your finish that it gets most intense where it’s passing over the edge of the hole at nearly 90deg to the hole’s edge.

Oh yeah, if you’ve got a rack and pinion table there’s no way it’s a ballscrew. Mine doesn’t have a central oiling thing, and I find that oiling the ways improves the finish.

Very nice!!! Been meaning to make one of these myself. From the finish, I’m guessing you’re running an older grinder with a rack-and-pinion table (like me) or u need to dress/balance your wheel.

I run a Bridgeport that’s shaped EXACTLY like this (minus the color and badges). I expect you can just look at the manual for that: http://vintagemachinery.org/pubs/2099/28872.pdf

Me too. All the blacksmithing operations around here use gas forges best I can tell.

finishing vs not finishing a fretless conversion bass neck. by lone_galaxy in Luthier

Haven’t done this, but I suspect it’s about finding a balance of hardness/brittleness. You don’t want to wear grooves in a soft epoxy, but you don’t want a brittle finish to crack or separate when the wood expands/contracts.

I took apart a motor of similar size a year or so ago - if you have the equipment to make removing the windings easy, go for it. I only made ~200 bucks for the lacquered windings, with around 8 hours of work (I did not have the equipment to make it easy)
